About the job

Requirements
  • At least 10 years of experience building production software systems, with substantial depth in Python, C#/.NET, or C++.
  • Experience with distributed systems, job scheduling, and interfacing with instruments or physical hardware.
  • A track record as the senior technical voice in a small team.
  • Experience delivering software into on-premise and restricted environments, not only cloud environments.
  • Ability to hold an architecture in mind and explain it simply to non-engineers.
  • Comfort working in a scientific domain; a physics degree is not required, but genuine interest is.
  • Pragmatism about trade-offs and ability to ship rather than perfect.
  • Strong written communication; architectural decisions must be documented.
  • A degree in computer science, physics, or engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Fluent English.
Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end architecture across backend services, job orchestration, hardware abstraction, and device state management.
  • Define interfaces between the scientific and platform layers so physicists can work without engineering support.
  • Make build-versus-buy and framework decisions, and document them so they remain clear beyond the tenure of their authors.
  • Lead migration of the platform onto the Constructor technology stack.
  • Write production code in the core system, not only design documents.
  • Personally own the hardest components where correctness and performance both matter.
  • Set and enforce engineering standards for testing, review, structured logging, and dependency governance.
  • Remove single points of failure so every core component is understood by more than one person.
  • Work day to day with research physicists, translating experimental workflows into software.
  • Maintain the research and engineering collaboration model as the group grows.
  • Support the product function with realistic estimates and honest technical constraints.
Desired Qualifications
  • German language skills are useful but not required.

Constructor Knowledge Labs

View

Constructor Knowledge Labs focuses on applied research in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. It works through collaborative projects and joint PhD programs in partnership with Constructor University, applying advanced methodologies to interdisciplinary fields like Robotics, the Metaverse, Neurosciences, Neuropsychology, Education, and Life Sciences from its base in Bremen, Germany. The center conducts research rather than selling a single product, using its expertise to tackle real-world problems by developing models, systems, and methods that can cross domain boundaries. It differentiates itself through a close university partnership, an emphasis on practical, applied research, and a multi-disciplinary approach spanning tech and science domains, aiming to produce tangible innovations. The goal is to make a meaningful impact by solving real-world challenges through applied research and technological advancement.
