Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current or eligible licensure as a Physician Assistant, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current or eligible licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • For the Nurse Practitioner pathway, qualification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner serving acutely ill or injured adult patients.
  • No prior experience is required; the fellowship is geared toward new graduates and experienced advanced practice providers changing specialties.
  • Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications are required before the start date.
  • DHEC and Drug Enforcement Administration license applications must be started before the first day when applicable.
  • The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant must maintain required licenses, certifications, continuing nursing education or continuing medical education, and other credentials under applicable policies and state law.
  • Applicants must submit a cover letter explaining how the fellowship aligns with their career aspirations.
  • Applicants selected for interview must submit three letters of recommendation before the interview.
  • The position requires the physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, qualify for respirator use, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe environment, and lift, carry, push, or pull specified loads.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care by taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and treat patients using history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope-of-practice guideline.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures within approved procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency.
  • Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult attending or collaborating physicians.
  • Document and bill for direct care when appropriate.
  • Use current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Support organizational accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
  • Participate in professional organizations and continuing education to maintain professional practice.
  • Attend education and academic sessions assigned by the APP Fellowship Coordinator or Director.
  • Complete presentations, lectures, quality-improvement projects, and other academic requirements.
  • Participate in required APP Fellowship activities.
  • Perform specialty procedures including lumbar puncture, central venous line placement, pulmonary artery catheterization, arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, chest tube placement, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, suturing and stapling, and removal of catheters, tubes, and drains.
