  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited First Assistant training course with didactic and supervised clinical learning components is required.
  • National certification as a Surgical Technologist is required through either the Certified Surgical Technologist credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or the Tech in Surgery-Certified credential from the National Center for Competency Testing.
  • Current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification is required.
  • Three years of recent diversified surgical technology experience is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform as the first assistant to the surgeon while carrying out the duties associated with the Surgical Tech III role.
  • Apply sterile techniques and use specialized instrumentation and equipment for a variety of specialty procedures.
  • Anticipate and prioritize the needs associated with each step of surgical procedures.
  • Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as dictated by the procedure.
  • Maintain surgical specimens so they are identified and preserved for pathology evaluation.
  • Order and stock specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines.
  • Perform duties under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon and understand the first assistant's role within the surgical team under the circulating nurse's supervision.
  • Communicate appropriate information regarding the patient's condition to the registered nurse and other surgical-team members.
  • Maintain working knowledge of surgical procedures and provide assistance to the surgeon during procedures requiring an assistant.
  • Position and drape patients; clamp and tie; cauterize superficial bleeders; provide exposure using retractors; maintain a dry field using suction equipment; follow and cut sutures; and suture subcutaneous skin and close wounds as directed by the surgeon.
  • Use knowledge and skill in tissue handling, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, homeostasis, asepsis, and infection control.
  • Recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action.
  • Perform advanced surgical technology practice and scrub duties across all surgical specialties.
  • Maintain clinical expertise and advanced knowledge of patient-care techniques related to surgical specialties.
  • Pursue professional growth, development, and continuing education.
  • Participate in orienting new staff as assigned and serve as a role model and technical resource.
  • Perform Surgical Tech III and other surgical technology duties as needed by the department.
  • Maintain punctual attendance and comply with Orlando Health policies and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
