Requirements
  • Applicants must provide a high school diploma or GED and a driver’s license or state identification card with the application.
  • Applicants must take the Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old and be a United States citizen.
  • Applicants must consent to a criminal background check.
  • Successful candidates must obtain TCOLE certification as a Corrections Officer within 12 months of appointment.
  • Employees who drive on official business must meet the driving-record standards set by the County and its insurance carrier.
  • The employee must be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups.
  • The employee must be able to perform basic arithmetic and calculate rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • The employee must be able to solve practical problems, interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, and scheduled instructions, and maintain control in highly stressful situations.
  • The employee must be able to communicate with individuals from all socioeconomic groups; learn laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, instructions, and correctional literature; follow oral instructions; write clear and concise reports; and maintain complete records.
  • The employee must meet established physical standards, including the ability to perform the stated standing, walking, reaching, climbing, balancing, crouching, crawling, lifting, and inmate-handling duties.
  • The employee must be able to observe inmates, watch monitors, conduct searches, and complete paperwork using the required vision abilities.
  • The employee must be able to work around moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather, electrical shock and vibration risks, loud noise, and exposure to body fluids, odors, lice, infectious diseases, and respiratory hazards.
Responsibilities
  • Guard, observe, and transport inmates while enforcing facility rules and policies and safeguarding the safety and welfare of inmates and staff.
  • Complete academy and field training, performing corrections officer duties under close supervision.
  • Attend the Training Academy to become a Certified Jailer.
  • Book, classify, observe, transfer, transport, and release inmates while attending to the health, safety, and security of officers, inmates, and the public.
  • Conduct inspections, shakedowns, inmate searches, and key checks.
  • Conduct inmate head counts.
  • Complete, check, and process official papers and documents.
  • Intervene in and resolve crisis situations, including fights, fires, and medical emergencies.
  • Restrain combative inmates.
  • Serve or supervise the serving of meals to inmates.
  • Supervise inmates while they perform cleaning duties.
  • Provide informal counseling to inmates.
  • Conduct safety inspections and inspect fire exits.
  • Assist inmates with personal needs, including telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits, and commissary.
  • Address complaints and resolve problems.
  • Be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by a supervisor.
