Requirements
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience at Staff, Senior Staff, or Principal level within enterprise infrastructure, database-as-a-service, or private cloud organizations.
  • Proven success building production-grade infrastructure control planes and deep understanding of API design principles supporting programmatic customer workflows and user interfaces.
  • Practical experience designing and implementing infrastructure observability stacks such as Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, and Grafana in isolated environments.
  • Operational knowledge and architectural understanding of Kubernetes, including practical experience building custom Kubernetes Operators and Custom Resource Definitions, managing Helm deployments, and working with the Kubernetes API to orchestrate application lifecycles.
  • Hands-on systems design expertise involving isolated environments across AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, Red Hat OpenShift, and bare-metal on-premises infrastructure.
  • Expert-level software development skills in Go, Python, or TypeScript, with deep knowledge of distributed state stores such as Etcd, Consul, or PostgreSQL, concurrency, and network security patterns.
  • Ability to author concise technical one-pagers and actionable Requests for Comments, present technical choices to executive leadership, and engage strategic enterprise clients to identify infrastructure requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end definition, design, and implementation of control plane and data plane services, creating resilient interconnections between them for the self-contained infrastructure platform.
  • Drive the design, data modeling, versioning, and long-term backward compatibility of robust REST or gRPC APIs powering the customer-facing user interface and programmatic integrations.
  • Architect the telemetry framework, including metrics, logs, and traces, for the self-contained platform and the Airflow instances it provisions.
  • Oversee the architecture of a self-contained software platform so that services, images, dependencies, and configurations operate in connected private clouds and zero-egress networks.
  • Translate complex enterprise infrastructure needs into execution roadmaps while aligning with product management and executive stakeholders.
  • Conduct comprehensive design reviews, make high-leverage code contributions, and provide direct career mentorship for senior engineers.

Astronomer.io provides a data orchestration platform built on Apache Airflow to design, deploy, and manage data pipelines. Its Astro product centralizes visibility and control over data flows, unifying data across clouds and teams with 1500+ integrations, while offering zero-downtime Airflow upgrades, a local development environment, real-time alerts, and pipeline health monitoring. The platform emphasizes broad cross-cloud integration, strong security, and compute efficiency to speed up pipeline development and deployment. The goal is to help organizations accelerate their data strategy, reduce scheduling delays, and achieve measurable ROI with reliable, observable pipelines.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Astronomer reported 122% EMEA ARR growth in March 2026, with 80% customer growth.
  • Its July 2025 AWS collaboration deepens migration, marketplace, and integration channels.
  • Astronomer says it holds 17% DataOps share and 88% cloud revenue growth.

What critics are saying

  • Andy Byron resigned July 2025; leadership instability can slow enterprise deals through 2026.
  • Dagster, Prefect, AWS, Google, and Microsoft squeeze Astronomer on price and distribution.
  • If Airflow becomes commoditized, Astronomer's moat shrinks and cloud vendors absorb its customers.

What makes Astronomer unique

  • Astronomer owns Astro, the commercial layer around Apache Airflow, still the orchestration standard.
  • Astro Private Cloud and Remote Execution serve regulated EMEA buyers needing data sovereignty.
  • Astronomer bundles orchestration, observability, and integrations into one enterprise control plane.
