Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • At least 2 years of lifeguarding and/or swim instruction experience with demonstrated leadership abilities are required.
  • Current lifeguard and swim instructor certification from a recognized organization, such as the Red Cross or YMCA, is required.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required.
  • Current Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification is required.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain YSLI-T and/or LGI certification within the first 90 days or by the first training offered.
  • Applicants must be able to interact effectively with staff and participants of all ages.
  • Knowledge of aquatic safety practices and procedures, including rescue techniques and emergency response protocols, is required.
  • Applicants must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by program schedules.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain required certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Applicants must complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, comply with mandated reporting requirements, and adhere to abuse prevention policies and appropriate boundaries.
  • Employment is contingent on the results of a background check.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and feedback to lifeguards and swim instructors while modeling professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Assist in training and developing lifeguards and swim instructors so they are proficient in their roles and prepared to handle emergencies.
  • Teach lifeguard and swim lesson classes and assist with in-service trainings.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact on the pool deck and maintain a constant presence to oversee operations.
  • Monitor pool activities, address concerns, and enforce safety protocols and YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Remain ready to teach lessons or lifeguard at any time during the assigned shift.
  • Respond to aquatic emergencies and coordinate with emergency services when necessary.
  • Conduct regular emergency drills and training exercises.
  • Interact with members and guests to address questions and concerns about aquatic programs or facilities.
  • Assist with emergency scheduling support, staff feedback and quick checks, and program-planning feedback.
  • Collaborate with management to develop strategies that improve quality and efficiency.
  • Identify and mitigate aquatic-environment safety hazards to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and documentation as required by YMCA policies.
  • Ensure staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization’s abuse risk management standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation, is preferred.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English is helpful.
