  • Deep hands-on experience with Kubernetes and containerized production environments.
  • Strong experience with at least one major cloud provider, including AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure, and its security model.
  • Strong understanding of identity and access management, workload identity, networking, Transport Layer Security and public key infrastructure, encryption, secrets management, and cloud-native security.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code; Pulumi is used, while equivalent tools such as Terraform or AWS Cloud Development Kit are also acceptable.
  • Experience designing, operating, and securing continuous integration and continuous delivery and software delivery pipelines.

  • Experience with observability, monitoring, logging, and production incident response.
  • Strong software engineering skills and the ability to solve operational and security challenges through automation.
  • Strong security judgment and the ability to evaluate risk in the context of real-world distributed systems.
  • Ability to operate independently, drive projects across engineering boundaries, and provide technical leadership in a small, highly technical organization.
Responsibilities
  • Operate AuthZed's production infrastructure by building, operating, and evolving the Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure powering its managed services, with a focus on availability, scalability, performance, and security.
  • Advance infrastructure security across Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, networking, identity and access management, secrets management, encryption, and service-to-service communication.
  • Strengthen software supply-chain security from source code to production, including continuous integration and continuous delivery, dependencies, container images, build artifacts, provenance, vulnerability scanning, and deployment controls.
  • Build automated guardrails, policies, and secure defaults into the engineering platform.
  • Improve vulnerability management by identifying, prioritizing, and addressing vulnerabilities across containers, dependencies, infrastructure, and cloud services based on exposure and risk.
  • Improve detection and response by expanding security telemetry, logging, alerting, and detection capabilities and developing and exercising security incident-response playbooks.
  • Participate in the Site Reliability Engineering on-call rotation, lead or contribute to production incidents, and improve operational practices.
  • Partner with engineering on architecture and infrastructure design, contribute to threat modeling, and help teams make security decisions early in the engineering lifecycle.
  • Shape security engineering strategy by contributing technical security expertise to engineering priorities, architecture decisions, customer security requirements, and AuthZed's security posture.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience operating distributed databases or other stateful distributed systems in production.
  • Experience securing multi-tenant software as a service or cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience contributing to security architecture, threat modeling, penetration testing, or security assessments.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator, Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist, AWS Certified Security – Specialty, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or Certified Cloud Security Professional.

About the company

AuthZed provides a comprehensive authorization system for businesses. Its main product, SpiceDB, is a database-like system inspired by Google's Zanzibar model to manage fine-grained access control. It supports Fine-Grained Authorization (FGA), Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), allowing companies to define precise permissions based on product needs, attributes, or roles. The system avoids complex SQL coding for recursive and nested permission sets, enabling low-latency authorization requests and smoother scalability. AuthZed targets organizations that require sophisticated access control, such as software firms and tech companies, and typically uses a subscription or usage-based pricing model. Its goal is to help customers maintain development velocity and prevent infrastructure scaling issues while delivering user-tailored, secure authorization.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • September 2026 product pages target OpenAI, Zoom, and Workday-style enterprise buyers.
  • April 2026 launched agentic RAG authorization, aligning product demand with AI budgets.
  • March 2026 query-planner gains and stable zed 1.0.0 improve performance and developer trust.

What critics are saying

  • OpenFGA and Okta FGA attack the same Zanzibar market with vendor-neutral governance.
  • AuthZed's AI pivot ties growth to crowded, fast-changing RAG and agent buying cycles.
  • If managed Cloud stalls, SpiceDB becomes a commoditized open-source project with weak monetization.

What makes AuthZed unique

  • SpiceDB v1.56.1 anchors AuthZed's Zanzibar-grade authorization stack in 2026.
  • AuthZed Cloud offers self-service, metered authorization for apps, RAG, and agents.
  • Composable schemas and Postgres FDW make enterprise migration and adoption easier.
