The new standard: how Proper Hospitality is redefining the luxury wellness ecosystem.

The new standard: how Proper Hospitality is redefining the luxury wellness ecosystem. Layla Zulfa October 1, 2026 7 minutes read In the contemporary hospitality landscape, the definition of "luxury" has undergone a seismic shift. No longer is a high thread-count sheet or a curated minibar sufficient to command premium nightly rates. Today, the most discerning travelers demand a seamless integration of health, recovery, and performance into their stay. Leading this charge is Proper Hospitality, which is aggressively expanding its wellness-centric infrastructure to blur the lines between a traditional hotel, a high-end recovery clinic, and a private social club. By retrofitting guest rooms into "recovery suites" and launching partnerships with industry giants like ClassPass, Proper is proving that wellness is not merely an amenity - it is the core of their business model. The strategic shift: wellness as a business imperative. For Proper Hospitality - founded in 2015 by industry veterans Brad Korzen, Alex Samek, and Brian De Lowe - wellness has graduated from a niche perk to a structural pillar. According to Brian De Lowe, president and co-founder, the group's philosophy is built on a holistic view of human optimization. "Wellness has moved from being a component of Proper to an important part of the entire experience," De Lowe told Glossy. "We think of wellness within our hotels as how you sleep, move, eat, recover, connect with people, and feel inspired and energized." This shift is rooted in the recognition that modern travelers view their health as a non-negotiable, even while on the road. By creating an ecosystem that supports these habits, Proper is successfully capturing a new segment of the market - those who prioritize longevity and vitality as much as comfort. Chronology: from boutique hotels to wellness powerhouses. Proper Hospitality's trajectory reflects the broader evolution of the luxury travel sector: * 2015-2017: The inception of Proper Hospitality. The group opens its first property in San Francisco, setting the tone with interior design led by the renowned Kelly Wearstler. * 2019: The opening of the Proper Hotel Santa Monica signals a pivot toward deeper health offerings, launching with the celebrity-favorite Surya Spa, which introduced guests to Ayurvedic holistic wellness. * 2020-2023: The group expands its footprint to Austin, Downtown Los Angeles, and Miami (The Shelborne). During this period, the company begins experimenting with "recovery suites," transforming standard room inventory into high-tech wellness spaces. * 2024-Present: The group formalizes its commitment to accessibility by partnering with ClassPass, allowing locals and non-guests to book recovery sessions, effectively turning their properties into neighborhood wellness hubs. The recovery suite: A masterclass in asset optimization. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the "wellness economy" is Proper's decision to convert traditional hotel rooms into recovery suites. Outfitted with state-of-the-art technology - including saunas, cold plunges, red light therapy panels, and full-body compression by Hyperice - these spaces are designed to facilitate peak recovery. In select locations, guests even gain access to the $159,000 "Ammortal Chamber." The business logic is stark. "We converted existing hotel room spaces, and they're more profitable as recovery rooms than they were as hotel rooms," De Lowe noted. Beyond the immediate revenue-per-square-foot, the move provides a "halo lift" that is difficult to quantify but essential for long-term brand equity. Hotels that offer these modalities are commanding higher average daily rates (ADRs) and fostering a significantly more loyal customer base. Supporting data: the rise of the biohacking market. The investments made by Proper Hospitality are backed by explosive growth in the global biohacking and preventative health markets. According to data from consumer research firm Research and Markets, the global biohacking market - which encompasses wearables, health diagnostic kits, supplements, and digital health subscriptions - is projected to reach a staggering $131.5 billion by 2035. This rapid growth, up from $28.2 billion in 2023, is driven by an aging population's desire for longevity and a younger generation's obsession with data-driven performance. Major players currently dominating this space include Oura Health, WHOOP, Thorne HealthTech, and 23andMe. Proper's integration of Eight Sleep smart beds and wearable-compatible programming positions them as a physical-world extension of the digital health revolution. Official responses and strategic partnerships. Jamie Mark, Senior VP of memberships and partnerships at Proper, highlights that the key to sustained growth lies in bridging the gap between the hotel and the local community. By utilizing ClassPass as a funnel, Proper is introducing its brand to "wellness-curious" locals who might otherwise never step foot in a luxury hotel. "We started to make the recovery rooms available to the general public because these were the same people that were eating in our restaurants," Mark explained. "We realized what a great opportunity that was to introduce more people to the Proper ecosystem." The results have been tangible. Many users who discover the brand through a single ClassPass recovery session eventually transition into annual members. With membership tiers in Santa Monica ($6,500 annually) and Austin ($5,500 annually), Proper has successfully created a recurring revenue stream that is independent of tourism fluctuations. Broader implications for the hospitality industry. Proper is not alone in this pivot. The entire hospitality sector is beginning to view wellness as a value-add that justifies premium pricing: * ResortPass Expansion: Hilton's recent expansion of its partnership with ResortPass underscores the industry's desire to monetize underutilized amenities like pools and fitness centers. * In-Flight Wellness: Fiji Airways has made headlines by integrating red light therapy and wellness supplements directly into the flight experience, signaling that the demand for health extends to the journey itself. * Specialty Guest Rooms: Proper's "Proper Sleep Rooms," which include Filterbaby shower filters, Vitruvi diffusers, and custom blackout curtains, represent a move toward "environmental wellness" - controlling the guest's immediate micro-climate to ensure optimal health outcomes. The road ahead: scaling the "Proper" Vision. Looking forward, the group is showing no signs of slowing down. With plans to expand into Dallas and Lake Tahoe, De Lowe and his team are applying the lessons learned from their Santa Monica and Austin pilots. Future developments will be designed from the ground up with these wellness footprints in mind, rather than retrofitting older structures. "Proper is in this position where we're entrepreneurial enough to be early in some of these partnerships, but we have enough scale as an organization to make a real impact," De Lowe said. As the industry moves toward 2035, the distinction between a "hotel stay" and a "wellness retreat" will likely vanish entirely. Proper Hospitality is not just betting on this trend; they are architecting it. Industry news & quick hits. Executive moves & sector updates. * Evvy Funding: In a correction to previous reports, female-led health startup Evvy has secured $40 million in Series B funding, underscoring the investor appetite for women's health technology. * Market Trends: The "sports and beauty" crossover remains one of the most lucrative areas for brand partnerships, as consumers seek products that survive high-intensity workouts. * The "Anti-Blush" Trend: On social media, the "anti-blush" movement is gaining traction, signaling a shift in consumer beauty preferences toward more muted, natural aesthetics. * AI Disclosure: As brands increasingly use AI-generated assets, legal experts are warning of strict labeling requirements that may soon govern the advertising landscape, impacting how beauty and wellness brands market their products. * Hyrox Popularity: The rise of high-intensity functional fitness competitions like Hyrox is fueling a surge in demand for performance-training data, with companies like Nrthrn Strong expanding their offerings to include VO2 Max testing. Expert insights. For those tracking the intersection of beauty and wellness, the Glossy Beauty Podcast recently featured Allure editor-in-chief Jessica Cruel. The conversation provided a roadmap for how brands can better align their offerings with the editorial standards of major beauty publications, emphasizing that authenticity and scientific backing are now the primary currency for consumer trust. As Proper Hospitality continues to iterate on its model, the message to the industry is clear: wellness is no longer a perk. It is the product. Subscriber

ClassPass introduces new partner policies focused on transparency and revenue protection.

ClassPass introduces new partner policies focused on transparency and revenue protection. Platform enhancements include stronger fraud safeguards, expanded booking protections and new business insights. ClassPass has announced a series of platform updates designed to provide fitness and wellness partners with greater transparency, stronger revenue protection and enhanced operational support. The changes, introduced throughout 2026, are intended to help the marketplace's 88,000-plus partner venues optimize unused capacity while strengthening protections for their direct businesses. According to ClassPass, the updates reflect ongoing investment in partner tools as the global fitness and wellness economy continues to grow. Increased transparency for partners. Among the most notable changes is the move to non-anonymous user reviews, allowing partners to better understand customer feedback and engage more directly with clients. Members will also receive notifications when businesses respond to their reviews. ClassPass has also expanded onboarding guidance for first-time users, providing clearer expectations around class preparation and studio etiquette to help create a more consistent experience for both clients and operators. In addition, partners now have access to SmartRate Insights, a new dashboard feature that provides greater visibility into pricing performance, revenue generation and opportunities to optimize class schedules. New revenue protection measures. To better protect operators' existing member bases, ClassPass has introduced Mindbody Direct Protection for businesses using both Mindbody and ClassPass. The feature is designed to prevent customers who have visited a studio directly within the previous year from redeeming a ClassPass trial offer at the same location. Beginning later this month, ClassPass also says it will compensate partners when qualifying late-cancellation fees are waived for users under eligible circumstances. Enhanced fraud detection. The company has also strengthened its fraud detection systems to identify suspected repeat trial abuse more effectively. Partners can now report potential misuse directly through an improved dashboard interface, with qualifying reservations remaining eligible for partner payouts where applicable. Expanded partner support. ClassPass has also enhanced customer service by providing partners with faster access to dedicated phone support when requested. "Our partners are at the center of the ClassPass marketplace, and we're constantly evolving to help them both protect their direct businesses and get more value from the ClassPass platform," said Jeff Bladt, Senior Vice President of Pricing & Marketplace at Playlist, ClassPass's parent company. ClassPass also noted that it invested more than $50 million in marketing during 2025 to drive new consumers to partner businesses, while reporting that the number of partners generating more than $1 million in annual revenue through the platform increased by 28% between 2024 and 2025. The platform says the latest policy changes are designed to help operators attract new customers, improve business insights and maximize revenue from available class capacity while maintaining stronger protections for their existing client base.

Marriott and Hilton deals with ResortPass deliver revenue for resorts spas and health clubs through day-access.

Marriott and Hilton deals with ResortPass deliver revenue for resorts spas and health clubs through day-access. By Charlie Emmerson 24 Jul 2026 The day-access market for fitness and spa experiences is creating new revenue streams for resorts Credit: Marriott Bonvoy Marriott has made ResortPass an approved vendor, but individual Hotel s must still choose to join the platform Hilton has extended its ResortPass Partnership for three years ResortPass has grown from more than 900 partners and 1.6 million guests in 2022 to more than 2,700 partners and five million guests It says some properties are getting US$3 million a year benefit Job opportunities Heritage Great Britain c£70,000pa + benefits + relocation support location: Isle of Wight, United Kingdom Marriott has signing a global agreement with ResortPass that will make it easier for participating hotels to offer paid day-access to Resort Spas, Health clubs, pools, cabanas and day rooms. Hundreds of Marriott properties have already worked with ResortPass through individual agreements, with the new arrangement creating a route for additional hotels to join the platform if they choose. Marriott has approximately 7,000 health clubs across 14 major markets globally, while the majority of its upscale hotels have spas, indicating the scale of the opportunity. Founded in 2016 by Amanda Szabo, ResortPass has created a marketplace that enables consumers to book access to hotel amenities without purchasing an overnight stay. The company now partners with more than 2,000 hotels across more than 30 countries and has served more than five million guests. Former ClassPass executive Michael Wolf joined the business as CEO in 2022 to lead its next phase of growth. For resort operators, the success of ResortPass highlights the growing commercial value of resort spas and health clubs, which are increasingly viewed as standalone businesses capable of attracting local residents and visitors. ResortPass says it generates hundreds of millions of dollars in ancillary revenue each year for its partners, with some properties generating as much as US$3 million annually. Wolf said: "People are increasingly looking for opportunities to rest, recharge and connect without committing to an overnight stay. "This agreement gives more Marriott hotels the opportunity to meet that demand while unlocking additional value from their existing amenities." ResortPass's Expansion has been supported by US$37.4 million in funding, including a US$26 million Series B round completed in 2022. The round was co-led by 14W and Declaration Partners, with Participation from existing investor CRV and new backers including Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brian Kelly - founder of The Points Guy - and William Morris Endeavor. The most recent funding round was completed at more than two-and-a-half times the valuation achieved in the previous round. Since the raise, ResortPass has more than doubled its hotel network from 900 properties to more than 2,000 and increased the number of guests using the platform from 1.6 million to five million. The Marriott announcement follows Hilton's decision earlier this month to extend its own partnership with ResortPass. The agreements reflect the growing commercial importance of resort Wellness. According to the 2025 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study, commissioned by the ISPA Foundation and conducted by PwC, resorts are one of the most profitable business models, with 54 per cent of resort and hotel spas reporting profit margins of 20 per cent or more and around 25 per cent achieving margins exceeding 30 per cent. The ResortPass model has equal potential for spa and health and Fitness and while ResortPass is not a substitute for a conventional health club Membership, it's creating a new route to market for resort fitness facilities, enabling operators to sell access to consumers seeking a Premium experience. Liz Terry, editor of HCM and editorial director of Spa Business, said: "For decades, the leisure sector has relied on two primary business models: memberships and overnight stays. ResortPass represents a third model based on day-access. "As resort health clubs, hotel spas and social wellness clubs continue to invest in premium facilities, the distinction between members, overnight guests and day visitors is likely to become increasingly blurred in resort locations."
