About the company

Masabi provides Fare Payments as a Service (FPaaS) for public transit, offering mobile ticketing and fare collection that agencies can deploy quickly. Its platform lets transit operators create branded mobile apps for ticket purchases or embed the system into third-party apps for MaaS integrations, enabling services like journey planning and ticket buys through popular apps (e.g., Uber). The product is modular, so agencies can deploy a full fare system or select specific components to fit their needs, serving clients from large metropolitan systems to regional operators worldwide. Revenue comes from service fees charged to transit agencies and operators. Masabi’s goal is to modernize and simplify fare collection by replacing old, bespoke technologies with scalable, cost-efficient, rapidly deployable solutions that improve accessibility and convenience for riders.

Masabi launches Passenger, bringing agency-branded journey planning, Fare Payments and concessions together in one app.

Masabi launches Passenger, bringing agency-branded journey planning, Fare Payments and concessions together in one app. 5 October 2026 Masabi, the global leader in enterprise-grade SaaS fare collection for public transit, today announced the launch of Passenger, a rider solution that brings journey planning, fare payments, concessions and real-time travel information together in a single agency-branded app. Launched at APTA TRANSform 2026, Passenger expands Masabi's rider experience beyond fare collection, giving transit agencies a single digital channel through which riders can plan their journey, pay their fare and travel, in their own app. Plan, Pay & Just Ride. Built on Masabi's deployment-proven Justride platform, Passenger is designed to give agencies greater ownership of the rider relationship while making public transit simpler and more accessible. Passenger is already the UK market leader, serving 2M+ riders a month and is rated above 4.7 in the app stores. It allows riders to plan a route, check live departures and service information, buy tickets or passes, access concessions and manage their account without moving between different apps or channels. The result is a simple proposition - Plan, Pay & Just Ride. "Transit riders increasingly expect the same simple, connected digital experience they receive in every other part of their lives," said Brian Zanghi, CEO at Masabi. "With Passenger, agencies can bring the entire journey together in an app carrying their own brand, creating a simpler experience for riders while gaining a much clearer understanding of how people want to move across their network. "It turns everyday interactions into an opportunity to build trust, improve communication and make transit easier to use, while keeping the agency's brand and relationship with the rider front and centre." One app. Every part of the journey. Passenger brings three core areas of the rider experience together within a single app: * Journey Intelligence Riders can plan journeys and compare route options, find nearby stops, check live departures, receive service alerts and disruption updates. * Fare Payments The app supports mobile ticketing and Account-Based Ticketing, including full and concessionary fare products, Open Payments trip history and account management. Where enabled by an agency, riders can also benefit from fare capping so they automatically receive the best available fare for their travel. * Concessions Passenger brings concession eligibility verification directly into the app, allowing eligible riders to access the correct fare without having to visit a customer service counter or complete a separate manual process. Passenger has been designed around the different ways people use transit. Daily commuters can quickly check live departures, receive disruption alerts and access their pass in the same place each day. Riders making unfamiliar journeys can plan their route before paying. Students and concession riders can verify eligibility and access the correct fare in-app, while visitors and occasional riders can understand the network and pay without first having to learn how the local fare system works. Masabi is committed to giving agencies choice: whether that means ticketing through Passenger, a third-party app, a bespoke agency app, or more than one rider experience, agencies can choose the digital approach that works best for their riders and network.

Both contend that Miami-Dade County's procurement process for its back-office deal has been flawed. Article highlights. Key Takeaway: Two vendors, Cubic and moovel, which are vying for Miami-Dade County's account-based ticketing back-office deal, have filed notices of intent to protest against a county recommendation to award a $42.6 million contract to rival Masabi, Mobility Payments has learned. It's the latest twist in the problem-plagued procurement. - Document: Cubic notice of intent to protest, Sept. 2026 - Document: moovel notice of intent to protest, Sept. 2026 - Table: First- and second-round evaluation scores, price bids (previously published) Organizations Mentioned: - Miami-Dade County - Cubic - moovel - Masabi - Miami-Dade Transit - Indra - INIT - Genfare Cubic Transportation Systems and moovel, which both came up short in their competition for Miami-Dade County's procurement of an account-based ticketing back office, have each filed notices of intent to protest a recommendation by the county to award a $42.6 million deal to rival vendor Masabi, Mobility Payments has learned. (Download the separate 14-page notices below.) The two suppliers respectively argued through their attorneys that they, not Masabi, should have emerged from the procurement's two evaluation rounds as the top-ranked vendor and to then have the right to negotiate a contract with the county. Both vendors are expected to soon file actual protests. The protests, which are not unexpected, represent one more complication in a problem-plagued procurement, Article has about2016words. Miami-Dade County recommends Masabi for back office deal; if approved by board, debt-strapped Cubic would lose another contract as incumbent.

Miami-Dade County recommends Masabi for back office deal; if approved by board, debt-strapped Cubic would lose another contract as incumbent. A draft county memo says Masabi lowered its original bid price by 23% to help seal the deal, but the proposed contract price is only 3% lower. Meanwhile, a loss by Cubic would not help what appears to be a worsening debt situation for its parent company. Alexander Shapovalov Article highlights. Key Takeaway: Miami-Dade County has recommended that UK-based Masabi be awarded a key back-office contract. If approved by board members, it would represent an important loss for incumbent Cubic Transportation Systems. - Document: Draft memo from county describing award recommendation, Aug./Sept. 2026 - Document: Memo recommending Cubic for its original fare-system contract in Miami, May 2008. Masabi wins Sourcewell contract, giving 50,000+ public agencies a fast-track route to modern fare collection.

Masabi wins Sourcewell contract, giving 50,000+ public agencies a fast-track route to modern fare collection. Masabi has been awarded a cooperative purchasing contract with Sourcewell under its "Transportation Services Payment Solutions" category. The agreement gives transit agencies a faster, simpler route to adopting modern fare payment systems by removing a lengthy direct procurement process and allowing them to fast-track innovation. Sourcewell conducts a rigorous, nationally competitive solicitation process on behalf of public agencies, evaluating and awarding cooperative purchasing contracts that satisfy public procurement requirements. Having been awarded a contract through that process, Masabi's Justride platform and many hardware options are now available for direct procurement by public agencies, municipalities, counties, tribal governments, and transit authorities across the US and Canada through the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing program. Justride is Masabi's open, enterprise-grade SaaS platform, covering the full spectrum of fare payments from Mobile Ticketing to Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) and Open Payments. Agencies can procure the complete platform or a standalone module and expand their solution over time as needs and budgets evolve, with a platform designed from the ground up to meet the needs of all riders, including the unbanked and underbanked. Through the Sourcewell Master Service Agreement, public organizations can move straight to procurement, as Sourcewell contracts satisfy competitive public solicitation requirements on behalf of member agencies, providing the procurement documentation and audit trail that public bodies need to move forward with confidence. Agencies benefit from pre-negotiated, highly competitive rates secured through Sourcewell's national buying power, ensuring maximum efficiency of public budgets. And, unlike single-state purchasing vehicles that often restrict out-of-state procurement, the Sourcewell contract is offered across the US and Canada, allowing agencies to adopt Justride without cross-border legal complications. "Public agencies want to deliver better journeys for their riders, but procurement can slow that ambition down," said Brian Zanghi, CEO at Masabi. "This contract removes that friction, giving agencies a fast, low-risk path to modern fare payments. We are delighted to partner with Sourcewell to put enterprise-grade fare technology within easy reach of communities of all sizes." Masabi powers fare payments for more than 300 transit agencies worldwide, with the Justride platform processing over $1 billion in fare transactions annually across networks ranging from small community operators to some of the largest and most complex systems. With this Sourcewell contract in place, more communities across the US and Canada can now access that same world-class fare technology on terms that match their scale, timeline, and budget.
