About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of engineering management experience, ideally in an AI, machine learning, platform, or MLOps context.
  • A track record of delivering production machine learning or artificial intelligence services at scale.
  • Experience bridging applied research or machine learning teams and production engineering, including taking models from handoff to reliable, monitored services.
  • Experience managing distributed teams across geographies and time zones.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with Product, Technical Program Management, and platform stakeholders, translating business priorities into engineering plans and vice versa.
  • Experience with COGs analysis and FinOps practices for AI/ML workloads, including tracking, attributing, and optimizing infrastructure and inference costs, and making informed build-versus-buy decisions on managed services.
  • Release management and planning experience, including owning a release calendar, coordinating cross-team dependencies, managing risk gates, and ensuring smooth, well-communicated production deployments.
  • A hands-on engineering background sufficient to engage in technical design decisions and code reviews.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Experience with cloud-native AI/ML infrastructure, including AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, and EKS, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
  • Understanding of audio and natural language processing model architectures, specifically Parakeet (ASR), the NeMo framework, and XLM-R-based multilingual models.
  • Production MLOps experience across the full model lifecycle, including experiment tracking, model registry management, gated deployment strategies such as shadow mode, canary, and blue/green deployments with automated quality gates, drift detection, rollback handling, and SLO-linked promotion criteria.
  • Understanding of ML model-serving patterns, including inference optimization and managed inference platforms such as Triton Inference Server.
  • Understanding of modern AI/ML architectures and system design patterns, including transformer-based models, agentic workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, and multi-agent orchestration, and ability to evaluate trade-offs in technical design discussions.
  • Familiarity with operational excellence practices, including SLOs, observability, incident management, and on-call culture.
  • Active use of AI-powered coding assistants such as Windsurf, Claude Code, or similar tools.
  • Ability to coach engineers on effective use of AI tools and distinguish practical value from hype.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A data-driven approach to engineering decisions and team health.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity and bring structure to new problem spaces.
  • Ability to build trust across cultures and time zones.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 4 ML Engineers and 1 Delivery Engineer across India and the UK.
  • Run one-on-one meetings, performance conversations, and career development planning.
  • Foster a high-trust, high-performance team culture grounded in continuous improvement.
  • Manage hiring, onboarding, and team capacity planning as the Cortex team expands.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of Cortex initiatives, from planning and scoping through production release and post-go-live operational support.
  • Drive delivery of new capabilities, including Audio Analytics as a Service, In App Translation, and Intelligent Agent Review.
  • Work with the Applied ML team to take in-house models from research handoff through production-grade deployment, managing integration, validation, and operational readiness.
  • Own and evolve Cortex's gated model deployment pipeline, ensuring models progress through automated quality gates, shadow mode, canary, and full rollout stages with clear promotion and rollback criteria.
  • Establish model evaluation and monitoring frameworks that track quality, performance drift, and SLO compliance in production.
  • Maintain and improve Cortex's operational SLOs, reliability posture, and incident response process.
  • Ensure engineering practices, code quality, and architectural decisions meet Smarsh engineering standards.
  • Actively use and champion AI productivity tools, including Windsurf and Claude Code, and embed these practices into the team's day-to-day work.
  • Set the standard for how the team uses AI-assisted development to increase velocity and code quality.
  • Identify and help introduce new AI tooling where it adds measurable value to the team.
  • Contribute to the Cortex technical roadmap with engineering leadership, Product Management, and Technical Program Management, aligning delivery with business priorities.
  • Build working relationships with the Applied Machine Learning team and bridge model development with production AI service deployment.
  • Partner with Cognition Logic and Cognition Analytics to align shared platform patterns, APIs, and service contracts within the Enterprise Conduct organization.
  • Engage with the Fabric organization on infrastructure, platform standards, and shared tooling dependencies.
  • Represent Cortex in cross-team forums, architecture reviews, and planning sessions, advocating for Cortex consumers' developer experience.
  • Help drive the AI Service Catalogue vision for discoverable, well-documented, operationally excellent services that product engineers across Smarsh can consume with confidence.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Kotlin or JVM-based frameworks.
