About the job

Requirements
  • 15+ years in software development, including at least 10+ years designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed storage systems.
  • A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
  • A proven track record of delivering storage systems at approximately exabyte scale, with depth in erasure coding, replication, data placement, repair and reconstruction, consistency models, and consensus protocols such as Paxos and Raft.
  • Hands-on expertise in the encoding layer, including Reed-Solomon and Local Reconstruction Codes, wide-stripe and geo-distributed coding schemes, and quantitative reasoning about durability, availability, repair-bandwidth, and IOPS trade-offs.
  • Familiarity with the architecture of industry-leading storage systems such as Google Colossus, Ceph/RADOS, Azure Blob Storage, Amazon S3, Meta f4/Tectonic, and HDFS.
  • Experience with the modern drive landscape and its implications, including QLC and dense flash, SMR, HAMR, heterogeneous fleets, declining IOPS per TB, and disaggregated storage and compute.
  • Experience designing storage for high-performance workloads, particularly AI/ML or large-scale analytics, and familiarity with I/O patterns of training pipelines, data processing engines, and high-transaction databases.
  • Operational credibility from carrying a pager for a storage system at scale and debugging data-loss and availability incidents.
  • Ability to influence without authority, drive major technical decisions, and align senior engineering leaders across a large organization.
  • Ability to communicate trade-offs to executive audiences and engage in deep technical debate with principal-level engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Own the multi-year architecture and roadmap for how ACOS encodes, places, and serves data, and identify and prioritize the most important problems.
  • Synthesize hardware trends, research and industry practice, and workload evolution into a strategy that keeps storage reliability and efficiency ahead of customer requirements.
  • Drive storage efficiency by reducing cost per usable byte, reducing replication factor without compromising durability, reclaiming overhead for compaction and other processes, and optimizing placement for space and IOPS utilization.
  • Land support for denser and heterogeneous drive generations, including CMR, HAMR, and SMR, without allowing IOPS per TB to become the fleet's binding constraint.
  • Guarantee 11-nines of durability in production despite software and hardware failures; own detection and repair end to end, balance detection latency against scrubber IOPS cost, and ensure correctness of encode, decode, repair, and rebalance paths.
  • Deliver differentiated performance tiers by improving tail latency and IOPS for the standard tier and introducing high-performance SSD-backed tiers for data and AI workloads.
  • Manage capacity so supply closely tracks customer demand, including demand forecasting, drive-generation transitions, capacity onboarding and decommissioning, quota and rate-limit commitments, and value release when the system is oversubscribed.
  • Mentor and grow the most senior engineers in the organization.
  • Lead design and development for the highest-consequence systems and set high standards for service design and operations.
  • Broker decisions across customers, partners including SRE, hardware, and capacity teams, and stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience building a credible, funded, multi-year path to materially lower cost per usable byte.
  • In-depth understanding of maintenance overhead per usable byte trending downward as drive density increases, and how to support denser drives.
  • Experience with durability guarantees measured and guaranteed in production.
  • Knowledge of production performance tiers that support AI/ML and data teams.
  • Understanding of capacity that tracks demand within a tight band.
  • A PhD in distributed systems or storage.

Cramer's "own it, don't trade it" Apple rule could save $900 in tax on a $10,000 gain

Jim Cramer's "own it, don't trade it" advice on Apple resurfaced on October 16, the day preorders for its $1,999 iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, sold out in minutes. The CNBC host has repeated the line for years and says only Apple and Nvidia earn that label. Apple closed at $343.46 that day, near its 52-week high of $348.15. Fiscal third-quarter revenue rose 16% to $109.4 billion, and iPhone sales rose 22% to $54.3 billion. Holding also cuts taxes. On a $10,000 profit in the 24% bracket, selling within a year leaves about $7,600 after federal tax; holding past a year leaves about $8,500. Apple reports earnings on November 2.

Cirrus Logic falls 40% from peak as KeyBanc downgrades it on Apple iPhone cut risk

KeyBanc Capital Markets has downgraded Cirrus Logic to "Sector Weight" from "Overweight," warning that Apple may cut iPhone output in 2027. Apple, which accounts for about 90% of the chipmaker's revenue, is reportedly asking suppliers to scale back component production as higher memory costs cool demand. Analyst John Vinh said Apple's cuts to TSMC wafer starts, equal to 15 million to 20 million iPhones, point to weaker volumes. He sees limited growth for Cirrus over the next six to 12 months, and delays in its PC expansion add to the risk. Cirrus shares hit a 52-week low of $105.10 on October 15, down 40% from their May peak of $180.42. The company has a market value of about $5.4 billion and reports quarterly results on November 4.

Apple's foldable iPhone Duo preorders hit record 14-week lead time as stock tops $5T

Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, is drawing record preorder demand. The earliest delivery date for a 512GB Night Sky model is January 25, more than three months away. The phone reaches stores this Friday. Morgan Stanley said the global 14-week average preorder lead time is the longest of any iPhone it has tracked in 10 years. The analysts said this reflects both strong demand and limited supply. Melius Research estimates Apple could sell at least 15 million Duo units in fiscal 2027 at $2,000 to $3,200 each, generating about $40 billion in revenue. It kept its buy rating and $370 price target. Apple shares trade near $342, up nearly 26% this year. The company reports quarterly earnings on November 2.

Apple acquires AI audio editing startup Samplab, likely to upgrade Logic Pro

Apple has acquired Samplab, a Zurich-based startup that builds AI audio editing tools, according to AppleInsider. Under the deal listing, Apple will take some of Samplab's assets and offer jobs to some of its staff. Samplab was founded in 2020 by Manuel Fritsche and Gian-Marco Hutter. It is small, with reportedly no more than 10 employees, and LinkedIn suggests only the two founders may remain. Its software could change any note in a recording, identify and edit chords, and separate tracks in fine detail. Apple added AI track separation to Logic Pro in 2024, splitting songs into vocals, guitar, drums, and other parts. Samplab's technology may be built into Logic Pro to refine that feature and allow editing of single notes within chords.

Apple staff warn against walk-in iPhone Duo buys as $1,999 foldable delivery slips to 2027

Apple store employees have warned that the new iPhone Duo will likely be out of stock for walk-in buyers on launch day, October 23, MacRumors reported. Staff have been told to discourage customers without preorders from visiting. Apple's first foldable phone starts at $1,999 and passes $3,000 for the 2TB model. Some delivery estimates run to December 5, and a mock order on Apple's site showed a January 25 date. Apple told CNBC preorder demand was "nothing short of extraordinary." Nikkei Asia reported that production slowed in September to "a few hundred a day," due mainly to Apple's strict quality control standards. Carrier partners such as T-Mobile hold their own inventory, and may offer earlier delivery.
