The company has since shifted heavily toward AI infrastructure and has become a major data center developer. One of its largest projects is located in Abilene, Texas, where Crusoe operates infrastructure providing computing capacity for OpenAI. Its growing portfolio has made reliable and scalable power generation increasingly important to the company's expansion plans. Boom created a new power business. Boom Supersonic is best known for developing Overture, a supersonic passenger aircraft. Last year, however, the company introduced a separate business focused on stationary electricity generation. It planned to adapt the engine technology being developed for its aircraft into natural gas-powered turbines designed to provide electricity to data centers and other large facilities. Boom said its Superpower turbine shares approximately 80% of its components with the aircraft engine, known as Symphony. Crusoe was supposed to be the first major customer. Crusoe had agreed to purchase 29 Superpower turbines, representing a planned investment of approximately $1.25 billion. Each turbine is designed to generate 42 megawatts, with initial deliveries expected to begin in 2027. The partnership was intended to give Boom an early customer for its new stationary power business while giving Crusoe another option for supplying electricity to its rapidly expanding AI data centers. That arrangement has now been terminated. Boom confirms the partnership has ended. Boom CEO Blake Scholl confirmed that the two companies are no longer moving forward with the planned turbine deployment. In a post on X, Scholl congratulated Crusoe founders Cully Cavness and Chase Lochmiller on the company's recent funding round before explaining that the turbines would no longer form part of Crusoe's near-term primary power strategy at its Abilene facilities. Scholl also said Boom has other customers in its pipeline and expects to deliver approximately 250 megawatts of Superpower capacity in 2027, with a target of reaching 1 gigawatt in 2028. Crusoe confirms it is moving on. Crusoe also confirmed that it is no longer working with Boom on the planned turbine partnership. Company spokesperson Andrew Schmitt said Crusoe is developing AI campuses across the United States and intends to select energy solutions based on the requirements of each individual location. That approach could include natural gas turbines as well as wind, solar, batteries, and grid electricity. Schmitt described Boom as a strong partner but said the arrangement was no longer the right fit for Crusoe's current plans. Abilene projects are using different power strategies. Crusoe's original 1.2-gigawatt Abilene data center, developed for Oracle and OpenAI, is powered by the electrical grid, according to the company. The facility also has a natural gas turbine plant, but those turbines are intended for backup power rather than primary electricity generation. Crusoe is separately developing another major Abilene facility for Microsoft. That project has a planned capacity of 900 megawatts and will use on-site natural gas turbines for its power requirements. Boom loses its launch customer. The cancellation represents a significant change for Boom's stationary power initiative because Crusoe was supposed to serve as the business's initial major customer. Boom had raised $300 million in 2025, with much of that capital intended to help commercialize its natural gas turbine business. The company's strategy was closely connected to its aviation ambitions. Scholl previously said revenue and profits generated from the stationary power business could help finance the development of the Overture supersonic aircraft. Boom still plans to expand its turbine business. Despite losing Crusoe as a customer, Boom says it has other potential deployments in development. The company expects to deliver hundreds of megawatts of Superpower turbines next year and is targeting 1 gigawatt of deployments in 2028. For Crusoe, meanwhile, the decision reflects a broader strategy of keeping its power mix flexible as it develops AI infrastructure across multiple locations.

We're grateful for the help Crusoe gave us in shaping Superpower and continue cheering for their successes. The future is long, and we look forward to potentially teaming up if/when turbines become part of their primary power mix." Crusoe confirmed to TechCrunch that it is no longer doing business with Boom. "We build AI factories from the power up, and we're bringing new campuses online across the country, powered by innovative energy sources," spokesperson Andrew Schmitt said in an email. "As our portfolio grows, we stay flexible, choosing the energy solutions that are right for each site as its needs evolve - including turbines, along with wind, solar, batteries and the grid. While Boom has been a great partner, the partnership isn't the right fit today. We wish them well."
