About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience designing and shipping complex hardware systems.
  • A track record of taking systems through the full cycle from prototype through manufacturing and deployment more than once.
  • A senior individual-contributor or technical leadership background at hardware companies that have shipped products.
  • Deep mechanical expertise and practical judgment in at least one of electrical engineering, power electronics, or embedded systems.
  • Experience with systems that had to survive real-world conditions.
  • Comfort serving as the technical anchor on a small team rather than managing a large team.
  • A bachelor's, master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to characterize systems before field use.
  • Ability to debug from first principles.
  • Ability to communicate across mechanical, electrical, optical, and software teams.
  • Ability to work independently and identify and execute next steps without being told.
  • Availability for core hours Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with additional nights and weekends during demo or field-test sprints.
  • U.S. Person status is required for access to export-controlled information or items; eligible statuses include U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, and certain protected classes of asylees and refugees.

Responsibilities

  • Own hardware architecture across the full system and integrate it with electrical, power, embedded, and optics.
  • Make technical decisions on the hardest problems from concept through production readiness.
  • Own the hardware release and production process in coordination with the Detroit manufacturing hub.
  • Identify risks early and conduct technical reviews to catch issues others miss.
  • Perform hands-on execution when the problem requires the role's specific experience.
  • Make design and manufacturing tradeoffs across cost, mass, reliability, schedule, and field performance.
  • Set the technical bar for design reviews, documentation, and release standards.
  • Mentor engineers by example through hands-on work.
  • Partner with engineering leadership on architecture and roadmap.
  • Travel to field-test events and range days.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with directed energy, lasers, or high-power systems.
  • Defense or aerospace program experience with MIL-STD or equivalent qualification.
  • Founder or founding engineer background at a hardware company.
  • Manufacturing depth, including standing up production lines or working closely with manufacturers.
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one.
  • Background in defense hardware, aerospace, Formula 1 and high-performance automotive, maritime, robotics hardware, or directed energy programs.

About the Company

Aurelius Systems

Develops AI-powered directed-energy laser defense systems

Aurelius Systems develops AI-powered directed-energy laser systems for defense, focused on detecting, tracking, and defeating small drones. Its flagship Archimedes Laser Sentinel is a lightweight, modular autonomous turret for mobile point defense that combines sensors, AI processing, and a laser weapon to neutralize drones with very low per-engagement cost versus missiles. It differentiates itself through autonomous modular hardware, AI-driven tracking and engagement, and interoperability with command-and-control networks, with partnerships for vehicle-mounted deployments and scalable manufacturing. Its goal is to scale Archimedes, expand production, and broaden its market reach through funding and defense collaborations.
