Requirements
  • A degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program is required.
  • Current licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist in Virginia is required.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology is preferred, or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required, or the ability to obtain it within the established timeframe.
  • Knowledge of current speech-language pathology evaluation and treatment techniques, including dysphagia management, is required.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and documentation skills are required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team while providing resident-centered care is required.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate residents to identify speech, language, voice, cognitive-communication, and swallowing impairments.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments and establish diagnoses based on clinical findings.
  • Develop, implement, and modify individualized treatment plans addressing residents’ functional goals and rehabilitation needs.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to improve communication, speech production, language skills, voice quality, cognitive function, and swallowing abilities.
  • Educate residents in techniques and exercises to improve speech clarity, voice production, fluency, and safe swallowing.
  • Establish measurable treatment goals and regularly assess resident progress, modifying interventions as appropriate.
  • Monitor swallowing function and recommend dietary modifications, compensatory strategies, and adaptive techniques to promote safe oral intake.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation professionals, dietary services, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate resident care.
  • Educate residents, families, and caregivers about treatment plans, communication strategies, swallowing precautions, and home exercise programs.
  • Provide counseling and support to residents and families coping with communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation of evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, care plans, and discharge summaries in accordance with facility policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
  • Participate in care conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education activities.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, facility, and professional practice standards, including patient confidentiality and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the rehabilitation department and resident care services.
