Requirements
- A degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program is required.
- Current licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist in Virginia is required.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology is preferred, or the ability to obtain certification.
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required, or the ability to obtain it within the established timeframe.
- Knowledge of current speech-language pathology evaluation and treatment techniques, including dysphagia management, is required.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and documentation skills are required.
- Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team while providing resident-centered care is required.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate residents to identify speech, language, voice, cognitive-communication, and swallowing impairments.
- Perform comprehensive assessments and establish diagnoses based on clinical findings.
- Develop, implement, and modify individualized treatment plans addressing residents’ functional goals and rehabilitation needs.
- Provide therapeutic interventions to improve communication, speech production, language skills, voice quality, cognitive function, and swallowing abilities.
- Educate residents in techniques and exercises to improve speech clarity, voice production, fluency, and safe swallowing.
- Establish measurable treatment goals and regularly assess resident progress, modifying interventions as appropriate.
- Monitor swallowing function and recommend dietary modifications, compensatory strategies, and adaptive techniques to promote safe oral intake.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation professionals, dietary services, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate resident care.
- Educate residents, families, and caregivers about treatment plans, communication strategies, swallowing precautions, and home exercise programs.
- Provide counseling and support to residents and families coping with communication and swallowing disorders.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation of evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, care plans, and discharge summaries in accordance with facility policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
- Participate in care conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education activities.
- Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, facility, and professional practice standards, including patient confidentiality and safety regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the rehabilitation department and resident care services.

- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), or eligibility to obtain certification.
