What believers are saying

  • July 2026 automotive revenue hit $1.6 billion, up 61% year over year.
  • Amazon AWS signed Qualcomm for custom AI data center silicon on September 8.
  • Qualcomm raised fiscal 2029 non-handset revenue targets to $40 billion.

What critics are saying

  • Apple revenue falls sharply in fiscal 2027 after Qualcomm lost iPhone share.
  • December 2026 data center revenue must convert purchase orders into shipments.
  • If AWS and hyperscaler ramps slip, Qualcomm stays a handset chip supplier facing Apple erosion.

What makes Qualcomm unique

  • Qualcomm pairs modem patents, Android silicon, and licensing cash flow into one moat.
  • September 2026 Snapdragon Summit pushed 2nm AI phones and agentic on-device models.
  • BMW named Qualcomm lead compute silicon provider through the next decade.

Qualcomm unveils 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 AI chip for premium Android phones

Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips on 22 September for premium Android phones. The chips are built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s 2-nanometer process and optimised for on-device AI. The chips combine a central processing unit, graphics processing unit, and neural processing unit. Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can run models with 30 billion parameters and includes security controls for agentic access to sensitive data. The chips will appear in premium smartphones from Motorola, Xiaomi, and ZTE. The launch comes as phone brands increasingly rely on higher-priced models during a market downturn. Counterpoint forecasts smartphone shipments will fall 14% in 2026 and another 1% in 2027.

Qualcomm launches AI-focused Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip as memory costs drive 14% smartphone market decline

Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipsets for Android phones, designed for on-device artificial intelligence processing. The chips, built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing process, will feature in premium smartphones from Motorola, Xiaomi, and ZTE. The launch occurs as the smartphone industry faces a contraction, with the market expected to shrink 14% in 2026 due to rising memory costs. Qualcomm is positioning devices with its high-end chips as "AI hubs" capable of processing AI models without cloud reliance. The chipsets include a CPU, GPU, and neural processing unit for AI workloads. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon described a shift from "phone-centric" to "agentic-centric" models. The Extreme version can run models with 30 billion parameters.

Astera Labs beats Qualcomm for 2026 despite higher valuation with 115% revenue growth and zero debt

Astera Labs specialises in high-speed data centre connectivity for AI infrastructure, whilst Qualcomm dominates the smartphone chipset market and is expanding into automotive technology. Astera reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $852.5 million, up 115.1% year-over-year, with net income of $219.1 million and a 25.7% net margin. The company carries no debt and generated nearly $281.8 million in free cash flow. Qualcomm posted fiscal 2025 revenue of approximately $44.3 billion, growing 13.7% annually. Net income reached $5.5 billion, though net margin contracted to 12.5% from 26% due to a one-time $5.7 billion tax charge. Both companies face concentration risk, with Astera's top customer representing over 70% of revenue and Qualcomm dependent on Apple and Xiaomi. Qualcomm trades at lower valuation multiples but faces near-term headwinds in its smartphone business, whilst Astera commands a growth premium.
