iManage links governed legal data to Gemini Enterprise. Fri, 28th Aug 2026 (Today) iManage has launched new artificial intelligence tools built on Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Legal. The integration gives users access to governed knowledge held in iManage from within Google's legal AI environment. The move links iManage's document and knowledge management system with Gemini Enterprise for Legal, allowing users to query matter files, precedent and internal expertise without leaving the Google Cloud workspace. It is aimed at legal teams, as well as users in financial services and life sciences, where sensitive records and access controls are central to daily work. At the centre of the announcement is an effort to address a recurring problem in corporate AI projects: staff often rely on duplicated or exported data sets that sit outside normal governance rules. iManage said the integration is intended to avoid that by retrieving information directly under existing permissions rather than from static copies of documents and records. That means the system can draw on matter, client and personnel data alongside unstructured content stored in iManage. Users can ask natural-language questions and receive responses based on current information that remains subject to the same controls and audit requirements already applied inside the platform. For law firms and in-house legal departments, this could affect work such as reviewing deal documents, handling e-discovery and searching for precedent. It also reflects wider demand for AI systems that can work with confidential information without forcing organisations to loosen long-standing compliance processes. Governance focus iManage framed the release as part of a broader effort to position itself as a knowledge layer for AI tools its customers already use. Rather than asking clients to move sensitive content into a separate AI repository, it is seeking to make its governed stores available to external systems while retaining existing controls. That approach is likely to appeal to companies that have already standardised on Google Cloud but remain cautious about applying generative AI to legal or regulated workloads. In sectors such as legal services, banking and life sciences, the quality of source material and the chain of access around it often determine whether AI can move beyond pilot projects. Google Cloud also used the launch to underline its legal industry strategy. "Legal professionals handle vast amounts of complex information and need AI tools that respect strict confidentiality while accelerating daily tasks. Bringing iManage into Gemini Enterprise enables teams to analyze deal documents, e-discovery files, and precedent with speed and confidence," said Satish Thomas, Vice President, Google Cloud. The partnership gives Google Cloud access to one of the better-known knowledge management suppliers in legal technology. iManage said it is used by more than one million professionals across 4,000 organisations, giving it an installed base that includes firms and corporate legal teams dealing with large volumes of documents and email. Industry pressure Legal technology suppliers have spent the past two years trying to show that generative AI can be introduced without creating unmanaged copies of client files or exposing confidential work product. Customers have pressed vendors on how models access information, whether permissions are preserved and how outputs can be traced back to source materials. Those concerns have become more acute as firms experiment with AI agents and workflow automation for drafting, research and document review. A system that can search governed repositories in place, rather than relying on one-off exports, addresses one of the practical barriers to wider deployment. For iManage, the integration also broadens its alliance strategy by tying its platform more closely to external AI models and interfaces chosen by customers. The company wants to give organisations choice in how they adopt AI while keeping core knowledge secure and available across different tools. David Zember, Vice President, Global Channels and Alliances, iManage, said the integration forms part of that effort. "This integration underscores our strategic commitment to building the industry's best ecosystem. This approach gives our clients choice in how they use AI to connect to the knowledge they already trust. Gemini Enterprise can securely draw on matter context, precedent and institutional knowledge in iManage while preserving the permissions, controls and auditability organizations already rely on," he said. He added: "It is a practical example of how enterprise AI and governed knowledge systems can work together to deliver more useful outcomes without compromising trust."
iManage to launch next-gen AI platform in October 2026. Wed, 26th Aug 2026 (Today) iManage said its next-generation platform will be generally available in October 2026. The release follows an early access programme involving law firms, corporate legal departments, and financial institutions. The launch centres on what iManage calls its Context Fabric, which links documents, communications, parties, and relationships within a matter or project, while adding context from practice management and financial systems. The system is designed to let AI tools work with an organisation's own knowledge while staying within existing access controls and information barriers. iManage is positioning the platform around a common concern among professional services and legal-sector clients: whether AI systems can produce useful work without losing track of permission settings, audit requirements, and the business context behind documents. The company said every answer generated through the platform traces back to an organisation's own information and that data is not exported outside the governed environment. That structure also underpins connections to external AI applications. According to iManage, the platform can connect with products including Microsoft Copilot, Harvey, Legora, Thomson Reuters, Spellbook, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Claude through an open ecosystem that uses governed access to organisational knowledge. Open connections A central part of that approach is the iManage MCP Server, which links compatible AI applications to an organisation's documents and contextual data while applying the permissions and audit controls already configured in iManage. With the next-generation release, the MCP server is also being extended to support actions such as creating workspaces and folders and filing, moving, and linking documents. iManage said those write actions are intended to ensure AI-generated work product returns to the governed record for a matter or project under the same access conditions and lifecycle rules as other material. The company argued that this creates a feedback loop in which new work written back into the system deepens the context available to future AI tasks. The platform also expands AI functions beyond a chat-style assistant. iManage said the software can answer questions across documents within a matter, build chronologies, analyse documents against internal playbooks, carry out tabular review across large document sets, and file the resulting work back into the organisation's knowledge base. Those functions are aimed at legal and other knowledge-intensive work. According to iManage, deal teams can compare current drafts against negotiated precedents and playbooks, while litigation teams can assess whether new evidence or expert reports align with pleadings, testimony, and earlier analysis across a case. Advisers can also use the system to surface previous advice and work product on similar issues before giving client counsel. Chief Executive Officer Neil Araujo set out the company's view of the market shift around AI adoption. "Every business is going through a transformation enabled by AI. It's reshaping how they manage their data, the tools people use, and how they operate," said Neil Araujo, Chief Executive Officer of iManage. "The organizations getting it right know AI has to reinforce their unique differentiation - while enabling safe and governed use, grounding it in rich context, optimizing token costs, and driving pervasive usage across the business. This is the foundation that we have built and will be available in October." Sector focus The announcement reflects a broader push among software suppliers to build AI features into document and knowledge management systems used by law firms and financial institutions. In those sectors, the commercial case for AI often depends less on broad, consumer-style generation and more on whether systems can work inside tightly controlled repositories without weakening confidentiality, compliance, and internal barriers. iManage said its early access programme covered organisations of different sizes, suggesting it is targeting both large global firms and smaller specialist practices. The company serves more than one million professionals across more than 4,500 organisations, giving it an established base from which to introduce the upgraded platform. The staged rollout also separates features already on the market from those included in the wider release. Playbook-based review, tabular review, and MCP read and write actions are available now, ahead of the broader general availability of the platform in October 2026. Alongside the software release, iManage said it is supporting user adoption with education and certification paths, as well as use-case videos organised by practice area, including employment and labour, intellectual property, litigation, M&A, real estate, and trusts and estates.
iManage accelerates enterprise AI transformation with Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Legal. New integration brings governed enterprise knowledge to industry-specific AI agents, helping legal teams automate complex workflows with greater speed and accuracy CHICAGO - August 25, 2026 - iManage, the company dedicated to Making Knowledge Work(TM), today launched new industry-specific artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities built on Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Legal to automate complex enterprise workflows. Within Gemini Enterprise, the integration gives users direct access to governed knowledge in iManage - surfacing precedent, matter context, and institutional expertise without leaving their existing AI workspace. Built on the iManage platform, it connects matter, client, and personnel data with unstructured content, so legal, financial services, and life sciences teams can ask natural-language questions and get answers grounded in up-to-date knowledge retrieved under permissioned controls, rather than a static export. This closes a common gap in enterprise AI deployments, where fragmented, ungoverned copies of content undermine both accuracy and compliance. iManage is committed to helping enterprise customers put AI to work without compromising the governance regulated industries require. Bringing Gemini Enterprise for Legal into the iManage ecosystem means customers already standardized on Google Cloud can extend its capabilities to their most sensitive, high-value content - legal matters, client records, deal documents - retrieved under the same access controls that govern them today. The integration also reflects iManage's broader commitment to building a best-in-class ecosystem that gives customers choice in how they adopt and apply AI, while ensuring their most valuable knowledge remains secure and accessible across the tools they choose. This is a template for how AI platforms and governed knowledge systems should work together going forward. "Legal professionals handle vast amounts of complex information and need AI tools that respect strict confidentiality while accelerating daily tasks. Bringing iManage into Gemini Enterprise enables teams to analyze deal documents, e-discovery files, and precedent with speed and confidence," said Satish Thomas, Vice President, Google Cloud. "This integration underscores our strategic commitment to building the industry's best ecosystem. This approach gives our clients choice in how they use AI to connect to the knowledge they already trust. Gemini Enterprise can securely draw on matter context, precedent and institutional knowledge in iManage while preserving the permissions, controls and auditability organizations already rely on," said David Zember, Vice President, Global Channels and Alliances, iManage. "It is a practical example of how enterprise AI and governed knowledge systems can work together to deliver more useful outcomes without compromising trust." iManage at ILTACON: why governed context beats the model. At the iManage company update at ILTACON 2026 in Nashville, iManage executives set out the case for a platform built to scale AI safely and deliver client value. The next-generation iManage platform reaches general availability this October. The stakes: AI is reshaping legal economics, and clients are the ones asking for it. AI is already changing the shape of legal and knowledge work. The organizations that are able to realize the value of AI at scale must focus on more than just the model. CEO Neil Araujo pointed to Gartner research that puts a number on why the data behind that AI matters as much as the AI itself. As Rita Sallam, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, has previously shared: "Organizations that fail to adopt comprehensive context structures - supported by a robust data layer - will perpetuate data inefficiencies and face heightened financial costs, as well as legal and reputational damage." Get the data right, and Gartner's research points to gains of up to 80 percent in model accuracy and a 60 percent reduction in costs. Freed-up hours only become client value if the knowledge behind them compounds. For law firms, a matter handled well this year should make the next one faster, not force every team to start from zero. Two things determine whether AI delivers that value: context and governance. For a period, the model itself was the industry's proxy for AI quality - that phase has largely passed. Araujo named where the real differentiation lives now: "It's not the model. It's not the layer that goes above the model. It's your data, your knowledge, your experience - that's what makes you different." Every organization now has access to broadly the same frontier models. What separates one firm's AI assistant from another's is what it's allowed to see, and whether its answers can be traced back to something trustworthy. That's a governance question as much as a technical one. An AI system validated against an organization's own approved guidance, with every answer traceable to its source, lets people apply judgment with confidence rather than checking AI output against nothing at all. Governed context has to work at scale, not just in theory. Araujo walked through what the iManage context fabric(TM) draws on: the documents and communications at the center, activity signals showing who worked on what and which version matters, and metadata that identifies what a document is and how current it is. None of that is enough on its own. He gave a concrete example: negotiating the same clause with the same opposing counsel for the tenth time and needing to know their position on a point like limitation of liability from the last negotiation. That information doesn't only live inside the document. It also lives in a practice management system, and only a connected, governed layer can surface it when it matters. EVP Shawn Misquitta extended the point with a second example from the platform's expert-finder capability: rather than searching lawyer bios for someone who has drafted a facilities agreement before, the system cross-references who has actually worked on comparable deals and narrows to the right two or three people. Context, in other words, extends beyond documents to firmwide expertise. The next-gen platform: where governed context turns into client value, at scale. This is where the next-generation platform comes in. iManage product strategy is aligned to three themes: a governed Core, Context that explains what's relevant and why, and Connected delivery wherever the work happens. All three arrive together when the platform reaches general availability this October - read the full announcement. On Core: the platform now extends governance to external collaborators and contractors without breaking the single source of truth or its audit trail, and adds disposition tools to retire redundant, obsolete, or trivial content at scale. This is because AI reasoning over messy files and clutter is more likely to produce inaccurate or irrelevant answers. Governance now also extends explicitly to AI itself: policies can specify whether a given client's data may be used with AI at all, and with which tools. That addresses outside counsel guidelines and client restrictions raised directly by customers, including government engagements and patent work, where firms are wary of what a model retains. On Connected: the iManage MCP Server - built on the Model Context Protocol pioneered by Anthropic (which iManage was among the first vendors to support) - lets AI tools reason over governed content without copying it out. Usage bears that out: MCP traffic has grown tenfold since MCP Server became generally available in May 2026, a clear measure of its usefulness. Senior Solutions Engineer Emma Furnivall demonstrated MCP connectivity live: a single request to Microsoft Copilot Cowork to prepare for a client meeting pulled from both Outlook and iManage, assembling a briefing without the user hunting across systems. MCP is expanding from read-only access to write actions, including creating workspaces and folders and filing documents, and from iManage Work to iManage Insight+ and iManage Tracker, each tool publishing what it can do so AI assistants can find the right tool for the job. On Context: an enrichment engine runs continuously across the entire document set, recognizing more than 100 document types and extracting key fields without any prompting. Furnivall's live demo showed the same intelligence applied to a document comparison. The platform read a redline, categorized each change by severity, and surfaced the one substantial edit that really mattered. It then ran a playbook against the draft to flag what complied with firm standard positions and what didn't, leaving the decision to accept or reject with the lawyer throughout. Switching to the next-gen experience required no data migration - just a single click. The scale behind all of this is real: more than one million professionals at 4,550+ organizations rely on iManage today. Chief Revenue Officer Pat Eskew added that the company now has more than 1,100 employees, about half of whom joined in the last three years, alongside roughly 150 who have been there since near the beginning - and it's adding around 400 new clients this year alone, at every size of firm. The long view. 2026 marks the 30th ILTA appearance for iManage - a company now in its 31st year. Araujo closed on this: a platform built by an organization that thinks in decades is now shipping the foundation for scaling AI into client value. Not promising, shipping. iManage and Thomson Reuters announce strategic partnership to deliver governed AI-powered legal workflows. August 21, 2026 Expanded integration brings CoCounsel Legal, HighQ, Noetica and Legal Tracker together with governed iManage knowledge to support connected AI-powered legal work CHICAGO, Aug. 20, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - iManage, the company dedicated to Making Knowledge Work(TM), and Thomson Reuters (TSX/Nasdaq: TRI), a global content and technology company, today announced an expanded strategic partnership connecting Thomson Reuters AI, authoritative legal content and workflow solutions with governed organizational knowledge in the iManage platform. The collaboration brings CoCounsel Legal more deeply into the iManage environment, alongside integrations with HighQ, Noetica and Legal Tracker, helping legal professionals work across Thomson Reuters solutions and the institutional knowledge already managed in iManage. The companies are also delivering Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, which enables approved Thomson Reuters AI tools to reason from governed iManage content while preserving the access controls, ethical walls and privilege boundaries applied to that knowledge. As legal professionals increasingly rely on Thomson Reuters AI tools for research, drafting, and matter management, they need those tools grounded in the specific context of the matter they are working on. The quality of AI-assisted work depends on the context those tools can reason over. By connecting Thomson Reuters AI and authoritative legal content with the organization's own governed knowledge, the partnership is designed to give legal professionals context that is specific to the client, matter and work at hand - while keeping organizational knowledge governed in iManage rather than creating separate repositories or parallel governance regimes. "Ask any lawyer what slows them down and they will tell you the same thing: the work lives in too many places. This renewed partnership changes that across more of the places where legal work actually happens, including CoCounsel Legal, HighQ, Noetica and Contract Express. The integration is deeper than ever with documents from iManage flowing directly into the workflow, work product flowing back automatically, and the connection staying current as matters evolve. Legal teams have spent years building their knowledge in iManage. We are making sure it works harder across everything we build," said Rawia Ashraf, Co-Head of CoCounsel Legal. "The MCP will add another way for our systems to work together, complementing the integrations customers already use today." What the partnership delivers The integration spans AI-assisted legal work, transactional workflows and matter management, helping knowledge surface in the tools and workflows where legal professionals already work. Key capabilities include: * CoCounsel Legal and side-by-side drafting assistance: During drafting, legal professionals can work with their organization's best-practice documents and clauses alongside Thomson Reuters market best practices for transactional matters and case law for litigation matters, bringing authoritative legal content together with the organization's own governed knowledge in the flow of work. * MCP-enabled access to governed matter content: Thomson Reuters and iManage will deliver MCP support that enables approved Thomson Reuters AI tools, including CoCounsel Legal, to reason from governed iManage content while preserving organizational access controls, ethical walls and privilege boundaries. * Connected transactional workflows through HighQ and Noetica: Integrations with HighQ, Contract Express and Noetica connect organizational documents and matter context with Thomson Reuters workflow capabilities, helping legal professionals move between drafting, review and transaction workflows while keeping work connected to the governed matter record. * Connected matter intelligence: Integration between Legal Tracker and iManage Work surfaces matter documents and correspondence alongside legal task and expense management, giving corporate legal departments a more complete view of each matter in a single workflow while connecting legal work with the knowledge and context behind it. * Knowledge that stays connected as work moves: Documents can flow from iManage into Thomson Reuters workflows and completed work product can return to iManage, helping ensure the knowledge generated through legal work remains part of the governed matter record and can contribute to organizational context over time. Ongoing product and engineering collaboration This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to an open, governed approach to legal AI. As organizations adopt a growing range of AI tools, those tools need access to trusted organizational context without requiring separate repositories, duplicated content or new governance models for every application. Availability API-based integrations connecting the iManage platform with CoCounsel Legal, HighQ, Contract Express, Noetica and Legal Tracker, are available today. MCP support enabling approved Thomson Reuters AI tools to reason from governed content in the iManage platform will be coming soon. About iManage iManage is dedicated to Making Knowledge Work(TM).
