Grafana Tempo 3.1 adds query-based trace redaction and sampling-aware TraceQL metrics.

Grafana Tempo 3.1 adds query-based trace redaction and sampling-aware TraceQL metrics. Follow InfoQ on. Grafana Labs has released Tempo 3.1, the first minor update to the 3.0 architecture. It adds TLS and additional SASL mechanisms to the Kafka client, lets operators redact traces with a TraceQL query instead of a list of trace IDs, and introduces an experimental query-time hint that corrects TraceQL metrics for sampled data. vParquet5 also becomes the default block format. According to Grafana, simple metrics queries now run close to twice as fast. The release builds on Tempo 3.0, published in June, which made the Kafka-compatible architecture (codenamed Project Rhythm) the default for microservices deployments. In that design, distributors write to a Kafka topic. Block-builders consume the topic to write Parquet blocks to object storage, and live-stores consume it to serve recent traces. Ingesters and compactors are gone, replaced by a backend scheduler and workers. Grafana says dropping replication factor 3 reduces storage from 3 to 3.5 times the trace volume to a single copy. Monolithic mode remains Kafka-free. Grafana Tempo Architecture Because Kafka is now on the critical path, the 3.0 client's limits became a problem. It supported only SASL PLAIN over an unencrypted connection, so any broker requiring TLS refused it. Tempo 3.1 adds TLS, including optional mTLS, plus SCRAM-SHA-256, SCRAM-SHA-512, OAUTHBEARER, and AWS_MSK_IAM. A new client_rack option enables rack-aware fetching (KIP-392), so block-builders, live-stores, and metrics-generators can read from a replica in their own availability zone and avoid cross-zone transfer charges. It requires brokers with rack IDs configured. A new producer_compression option accepts none, gzip, snappy, lz4, or zstd; unset, it defaults to snappy. Grafana notes that this, together with TLS, makes Azure Event Hubs usable as a backend, since it accepts only gzip. All three changes came from community contributors. Trace redaction, introduced in 3.0 through t`empo-cli redact`, previously required enumerating trace IDs. Sensitive values such as tokens or account numbers often appear across more traces than can practically be listed. In 3.1 the command takes a TraceQL query and supports -dry-run, which counts matches without modifying blocks. Grafana limits the syntax to one spanset filter. It uses equality comparisons on resource.* and span.* attributes, along with && and |. This is because the rewrite cannot be undone. -start and -end flags narrow the time range, which matters because Tempo pauses compaction for a tenant while a redaction applies. Grafana warns that older workers ignore the window and remove every match in each block they receive, without an error. The flags should only be used once every scheduler and worker runs 3.1. TraceQL metrics, which became generally available in 3.0, gains three changes. The experimental hint with (extrapolate=true) scales by the sampling rate in tracestate. This follows OpenTelemetry's probability sampling rules. At 50% sampling, each stored span counts as two. Spans without a recorded rate count as one, so partial adoption does not distort other services. It applies to: rate, count_over_time, sum_over_time, avg_over_time, histogram_over_time, quantile_over_time, and compare, but not to min_over_time or max_over_time. It requires vParquet4 or later and reads the rate the same way as the metrics-generator's enable_tracestate_span_multiplier setting from 3.0, so ad-hoc queries and pre-aggregated series should agree. Second, +, -, *, and / now work between metrics queries and scalars, so an error rate becomes a single query. Third, the span-only fetch path, experimental in 3.0, is now on by default for vParquet5 blocks. In one warmed-up test, | rate finished in slightly over half the time. Other additions include an experimental span pruning option on the trace-by-ID v2 endpoint, which collapses similar leaf spans into one summary span carrying count and duration statistics. The same endpoint gains TraceQL filtering. A new experimental POST /api/v2/traces/diff endpoint compares two traces and can return a compact summary instead of a span-level patch. It is exposed through gcx, tempo-cli, and the Tempo MCP server, where Grafana says the smaller payload helps LLM-driven investigations. The metrics-generator gets an unmatched_span_kind label on expired service-graph edges, support for the renamed OpenTelemetry db.system.name attribute, and pooled label buffers that Grafana reports reduce per-span allocations to zero in its service-graph benchmarks. Glean names Francesca Moore as ANZ sales vice president.

Glean names Francesca Moore as ANZ sales vice president. Wed, 14th Oct 2026 (Today) Glean has appointed Francesca Moore as Vice President of Sales for Australia and New Zealand, expanding its leadership team in a market it has identified for growth. Moore will oversee the business across Australia and New Zealand, including go-to-market strategy, enterprise sales and regional team growth. Her appointment comes as businesses in the region shift from testing artificial intelligence tools to deploying them more widely across their operations. The role is part of a broader investment in Australia and New Zealand, where companies are under pressure to show practical returns on AI spending. Glean cited findings from its Work AI Index showing Australian workers spend an average of 6.5 hours a week making AI usable, while only 10% say their organisation is performing significantly better as a result. Glean's pitch centres on the idea that AI systems need access to a business's internal knowledge, people, permissions and workflows to produce reliable results. That argument has become more prominent as companies move beyond early trials and focus on whether AI can improve day-to-day work. Before joining Glean, Moore was Regional Vice President for APAC at Grafana Labs, where she led the business across the region. She also held regional leadership roles at MongoDB and AppDynamics, building teams and customer relationships in Australia and across Asia-Pacific. Amar Maletira, Chief Operating Officer at Glean, said the appointment reflects the company's long-term plans in the region. "Australia and New Zealand is an important growth market for Glean, and we're investing for the long term," Maletira said. "Francesca brings a strong track record of scaling enterprise technology businesses in ANZ, building high-performing teams, and earning the trust of customers. She will play an important role in growing Glean's business across the region and helping more organisations deploy AI that is grounded in the context of their business and built to deliver real value." Glean has been positioning itself around enterprise search and AI tools that draw on internal company data to answer questions and support workflows. In Australia and New Zealand, it is operating in a market where buyers are becoming more cautious about broad AI claims and more focused on security, access controls and measurable outcomes. Regional focus The appointment of a senior sales executive for Australia and New Zealand suggests Glean sees enough demand to justify a more formal local structure. Regional hiring by overseas software groups has picked up as vendors try to convert interest in AI into longer-term contracts with large companies and government-linked organisations. For many of those customers, the challenge is not access to large language models but integrating AI into existing systems and ensuring staff can use the tools without creating compliance or governance problems. Suppliers that can show how AI fits established workflows are likely to face closer scrutiny from procurement teams than they did during the first wave of generative AI adoption. Moore said businesses in the region are now looking beyond small-scale trials. "Australia and New Zealand are at an important inflection point with enterprise AI," Moore said. "Organisations are moving beyond pilots and asking how AI can deliver meaningful value across the business. What stood out to me about Glean is its ability to give AI the enterprise context it needs to be genuinely useful. I'm excited to work with our customers, partners and team across the region as we scale."

Netbox Labs partners with NVIDIA and Grafana Labs, announces new additions to the NetBox Infrastructure Intelligence Platform to Assemble the Intelligence Layer for AI Datacenter and Enterprise Infrastructure Buildouts. NetBox, already used by more than 90% of top neoclouds, and companies including Arm, J.P. Morgan Chase and CoreWeave, becomes native to NVIDIA DSX OS and the Grafana catalog, and adds new ways for people and AI agents to design and run the world's most complex infrastructure environments. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Oct. 13, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Kennedy Space Center - NetBox Labs, the company behind NetBox, the system of record for networks and datacenters, today announced partnerships with NVIDIA and Grafana Labs, along with a host of new platform capabilities, at the first ever NetBox Evolve conference. Together, these announcements extend NetBox's position as the central intelligence layer for the world's technology infrastructure. * NVIDIA now integrates with NetBox as a native source of truth for NVIDIA Configuration Manager (NVCM), the network orchestration component of NVIDIA DSX OS. As the AI infrastructure buildout accelerates, this partnership puts NetBox at the center of how AI infrastructure is designed, provisioned, and operated. * Grafana Labs and NetBox Labs have released an official NetBox plugin in the Grafana catalog. It brings live infrastructure context into Grafana dashboards and alerts, enabling network and datacenter teams to attach meaning to their data. * NetBox Labs Infrastructure Intelligence Platform has expanded with new products and features. NetBox Designs joins NetBox Visual Explorer and NetBox Asset Lifecycle to accelerate the design and planning, procurement, and management of datacenter and network buildouts. In addition, new agents and AI operations capabilities help every team automate their infrastructure atop NetBox's vendor-neutral context. Finally, a variety of new integrations and new dashboards for NetBox Analytics help teams bring more data into NetBox, and quickly understand their infrastructure. "Whether teams are building enterprise networks and infrastructure in retail, healthcare, financial services, or deploying an AI datacenter at massive speed and scale, configuration, observability and automation all depend on having an authoritative record of what infrastructure should exist and how it should be operating. That record is NetBox," said NetBox Labs CEO and cofounder Kris Beevers. "Today NetBox is used by companies like Arm, CoreWeave, Kaiser Permanente and J.P. Morgan Chase to build, run and grow their networks and infrastructure. We're seeing tremendous growth, with more than 90% of the top neoclouds using NetBox to design and scale their AI datacenters and we expect NetBox to power more than 100 GW of AI datacenter capacity by 2030." NetBox becomes native to NVIDIA DSX OS NVIDIA has partnered with NetBox Labs to make NetBox a native source of truth for NVCM, so network configuration in DSX OS comes straight from the system of record that AI infrastructure teams already use. This puts NetBox at the center of the design, provisioning and operation of today's large-scale AI deployments. NetBox provides the central data driving automation of configuration across NVIDIA-native cluster fabrics. NetBox context in every Grafana Labs dashboard Infrastructure produces more telemetry than ever. But telemetry only shows what infrastructure is doing, not what it is: which device an interface belongs to, which site it's in, what role it plays, who owns it, and whether it should exist at all. Today, teams fill that gap by hand, with brittle scripts or guesswork. Now, with the partnership between NetBox Labs and Grafana Labs, NetBox records what infrastructure is supposed to be, and Grafana shows what it's actually doing. The free, open source NetBox plugin, built with Grafana Labs and published in the Grafana catalog, carries live NetBox context (site, role, tenant, rack, owner, lifecycle) into Grafana dashboards and alerts. It requires no pipeline changes, avoids stale labels and adds no metric cost. Separately, NetBox Labs' open source Orb platform now gives Grafana Cloud users a new source of network flow and packet telemetry. "Network and infrastructure observability are popular use cases we see across the Grafana community, and context is what separates a wall of metrics from answers and action," said Ash Mazhari, VP of Corporate Development, Grafana Labs. "NetBox is the system of record teams already trust. With the NetBox data source in our catalog and Orb delivering network telemetry into Grafana Cloud, our users get a deeper understanding of their infrastructure and network data." New NetBox Labs Platform capabilities for people and AI agents In addition to the partnerships, NetBox Labs also announced several new additions to the NetBox Labs Infrastructure Intelligence platform. * NetBox Designs, now in public preview, delivers reusable templates for rapid infrastructure design. Teams define a site, rack or IP plan once, then can rinse and repeat for large scale deployments. NetBox Asset Lifecycle then carries the planned objects through bill of materials, purchase order, shipment and installation. * NetBox Analytics adds a number of new ready-made dashboards this week to help teams understand their complex infrastructure environments, and will be generally available next month alongside NetBox Visual Explorer, which enables teams to rapidly view and navigate large-scale datacenter and network footprints. * Integrations between the NetBox Labs platform and the surrounding ecosystem continue to multiply. Arista CloudVision, AWS VPC IPAM, and Cisco Nexus Dashboard integrations become generally available this month, and new integrations with Palo Alto Panorama, Tenable, and Kubernetes enter public preview later in October. * Agentic operations depend on NetBox as the vendor-neutral context layer for AI agents. Per Gartner(R) forecast, by 2030, 50% of organizations will use agentic NetOps with minimal human involvement, up from nearly 0% in 2026. (Source: Gartner, 2026 Strategic Roadmap for Agentic AI in Infrastructure and IT Operations, Tim Zimmerman, Mike Leibovitz, Andrew Lerner, Jonathan Forest, Karen Brown, 5 June 2026) * NetBox Agents gains new pre-built agents for change request review, lifecycle and version compliance, data quality management, and data import that lower barriers for teams to accelerate agentic automation. Now available in public preview. * The fully managed, now generally available NetBox Platform MCP Server lets teams bring infrastructure context to their own agents, which can query and change infrastructure across the whole platform in plain language with nothing to host. "Only NetBox Labs provides a comprehensive infrastructure intelligence platform that spans every stage of the infrastructure lifecycle, with vendor neutrality, clear agent guardrails, and the trust of the world's most demanding environments," said CEO and cofounder Kris Beevers. "Today's NetBox Labs product and NVIDIA and Grafana Labs partner announcements enable teams at any point in their infrastructure modernization journey to work with confidence knowing they are backed by the world's most powerful infrastructure intelligence platform. We're very excited about what these partnerships and product announcements mean for our customers and business."
