About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Can developing nations cope with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots AI agents?

Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots, new personal agents that book tables, buy groceries, and handle other online chores, may struggle in developing nations, experts told Rest of World. Muse has been downloaded 9 million times in the US and Canada since September 8, and Meta wants a global launch. Language and culture are a hurdle. South African startup ManyHands says getting its assistant to work in all 11 official spoken languages has been hard, and researchers warn agents could impose Western assumptions. Networks are another worry. Cisco says agents generate up to 450% more traffic per task than humans, and poor connectivity could limit what they can do. Cost and access matter too. Only 36% of Africans used the internet in 2025, and Dots costs at least $100 a month.

US stock futures rise before Meta, Tesla earnings as Brent falls 2.6% to $106.97

US stock futures rose on Monday as investors awaited earnings from major technology companies, with worries over AI financing still weighing on sentiment. At 03:06 ET, Dow Jones futures were up 0.4%, S&P 500 futures 0.7%, and Nasdaq 100 futures 1.3%. Meta and Tesla report after the market close on Wednesday. Investors will look for comment on AI spending. Oil fell after President Donald Trump suspended several sanctions on Russia. Brent crude dropped 2.6% to $106.97 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate fell 2.0% to $99.36. China's third-quarter GDP grew 4.5% year on year, beating the 4.4% forecast. Chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies projected nine-month revenue of up to CNY 270 billion and a return to profit, yet its shares fell.

Two Kenyan AI startups win $5,000 each in Meta's inaugural pitchathon

Two Kenyan artificial intelligence (AI) startups, Neural Labs Africa and Me-Nasoma, won the inaugural Meta AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon. Each received $5,000 (about Sh645,000) in equity-free funding, plus Meta advertising credits. Neural Labs Africa won with NeuralSight, a tele-radiology platform that links healthcare facilities with remote specialists, including where internet access is limited. Me-Nasoma built a platform that turns documents and web pages into audio for learners and others who struggle to read text. Meta ran the contest with This Is Digital. It drew more than 426 applications, and 10 finalists pitched. The winners are invited to pitch at Meta's Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 24.

OnlyFans creators slam Meta for letting its Muse AI sext while restricting their accounts

Meta lets its AI agent, Muse, engage in explicit sexting with adult users, and some OnlyFans creators say that is unfair. They point out that their own Instagram and Facebook accounts are often restricted. Vanniall, a New York City creator, says she constantly faces reports and appeals. Her Instagram account, which has over 100,000 followers, is restricted and cannot be viewed without logging in. "It's not fair that they get to pull money out of people with their sexually active AI agent, but they won't let real people, real adults, engage in any sort of sensuality or sexuality," she told WIRED. Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton said a private, one-to-one chat between an adult and an AI agent on an 18-and-over platform differs from marketing services on social media. Muse generates explicit text, but not images or videos.

Louisiana college trains data center workers for Meta's giant AI site, with 7,500 trade jobs at peak

Louisiana Delta Community College is training residents for jobs at Meta's Hyperion data center, a nearly 10-million-square-foot site under construction in rural Richland Parish. Meta says the project will employ more than 7,500 trade workers at peak construction and support 1,000 operational jobs once complete. The college's four-week Data Center Technician programme costs nearly $3,700. All 11 students in the first class, which graduated in March, received job offers from IES Communications, which employs people working on Meta's project. The programme now produces about 24 graduates a month and has a backlog of applicants. Entry-level roles can pay up to $24 an hour, and some graduates reached $27 to $28 within six months, according to director of Workforce Trades Dan McCarty. Graduates can also use the skills outside Meta, in banks and IT departments.
