What believers are saying

  • Charlotte opening follows heavy fan demand, including overnight tailgating and 9,000-person local enthusiasm.
  • September 2026 supply-chain investment adds refrigerated capacity and reduces third-party dependence before growth accelerates.
  • Wegmans signed Cornelius property in September 2026, signaling a three-to-five-store Charlotte cluster strategy.

What critics are saying

  • Harris Teeter, Publix, and Food Lion are modernizing Charlotte fast to blunt Wegmans’ entry.
  • The $110 million network overhaul needs flawless execution before spring 2027 or service quality slips.
  • If Charlotte expansion stalls, Wegmans remains a Northeastern regional chain facing slower national relevance.

What makes Wegmans unique

  • Wegmans opens 110,000-square-foot Ballantyne store October 14, 2026, with restaurant-scale prepared foods.
  • Colleen Wegman and Danny Wegman keep family control, preserving a culture competitors cannot copy.

Wegmans closing Amore Restaurant on East Avenue.

Wegmans closing Amore Restaurant on East Avenue. Posted: Oct 12, 2026 / 09:12 AM EDT Updated: Oct 12, 2026 / 09:12 AM EDT ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Wegmans announced that its Amore Restaurant on East Avenue will close by the end of the month. According to Wegmans, no amount of marketing or investment would have been enough to attract customer traffic to make the restaurant a success. They made the difficult decision to close the restaurant's doors on Saturday, October 31. The supermarket chain plans to retain all of its Amore employees and help them transition to their next roles with the company. Wegmans also thanked Restaurant Chef Pasquale Sorrentino and the team for giving customers an "incredible dining experience." The restaurant opened in 2013. Wegmans plans to continue the spirit of Amore through its stores, recipe development, and products.

'A grocery store on steroids': Charlotte's first Wegmans opening next week.

'A grocery store on steroids': Charlotte's first Wegmans opening next week. Posted: Oct 9, 2026 / 08:15 AM EDT Updated: Oct 9, 2026 / 08:15 AM EDT CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) - The wait is almost over for a highly anticipated grocery store opening in Ballantyne. Charlotte's new Wegmans supermarket opens at 9 a.m. next Wednesday. "I always call it a grocery store on steroids. It's insane," said Joey Dee, a Wegmans superfan originally from Buffalo, New York. Wegmans invited media outlets and select shoppers to take their first steps inside Thursday. Dee wore his Buffalo Bills jersey to the visit, and it can feel like Wegmans has as much of a fan following as any sports team. "This is my first time," said Stephanie Cook. "I'm obsessed. I love it. I might join the cult soon, I don't know." It was also the first time in a Wegmans for Angelina Khang and her boyfriend. "The interior is very different from any groceries that we've been to," she said. "It almost feels like you escaped into a different part of the world and you're stepping out of Charlotte Ballantyne." The building is 112,000 square feet, which is about 2.5 acres or just under the size of two full football fields. Wegmans served samples on Thursday of foods like butternut squash, spicy sausage rigatoni, and chocolate cake. "We started in 1916 as a produce stand, and we have evolved into the supermarket chain that we are," said J.P. Prinzivalli, the service-area manager. "I like to say we are a people company that happens to sell food." Store managers are aware that there will likely be many people next week lining up overnight and tailgating for the grand opening. Prinzivalli says they welcome it as long as there are no campers in the parking lot. "We're pretty fanatical," Dee said of his fellow Wegmans enthusiasts. "It wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of Bills fans are out there breaking tables in the parking lot Tuesday night."

Wegmans prepares for next week's grand opening in Ballantyne.

Wegmans prepares for next week's grand opening in Ballantyne. 2 hours ago CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The highly anticipated arrival of Wegmans in Ballantyne is less than a week away, and excitement is peaking for local shoppers. The supermarket is putting the finishing touches on its new location ahead of its official opening next Wednesday. Store managers say teams are currently preparing for a mad dash delivery schedule to fully stock the fresh produce and grocery departments. Beyond standard groceries, the store is expected to serve as a community hub, offering restaurant-grade hot foods, sushi, and subs. Management also emphasized that the store is launching daily partnerships with local hunger-relief organizations, including Nourish Up and Feeding Charlotte, to donate unsold food to nearby families in need. Wegmans store manager Patrick McGuinness says, "What makes us a great place is being, being family owned and operated. It's always a focus of people. That, you're gonna walk around and you're gonna see the building and understand what we do, but really it's the people inside that make Wegmans what it is." The Ballantyne Wegmans will employ approximately 450 people. Follow this topic
