Graypool raises $5M pre-seed from Werner and Kearney to automate freight dispatch

Graypool, formerly known as HOPTEK, has raised $5 million in pre-seed funding. The Atlanta-based startup announced the round and its rebrand at the American Trucking Associations' Management Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte. Investors include Werner Enterprises, Kearney, LPX Partners, Venture 53, and Jerk Ventures. Graypool's software helps truckload carriers decide which freight to take. It connects to existing transportation management systems and load boards, accepts profitable contract and spot loads, and routes exceptions for review. Werner, an investor and customer, books about $1.5 million in freight weekly through Graypool Source. Graypool says it has facilitated $150 million in annualized freight revenue across its customers. The company plans to expand its engineering teams and connect carriers to more sources of demand.

Werner Enterprises secures new $1.1B credit facility with tightened covenants

Werner Enterprises has established a new $1.1 billion unsecured credit facility, replacing its previous $1.075 billion line from December 2022. The new facility, which matures in October 2031, eliminates a 0.10% SOFR credit adjustment spread included in the earlier agreement. The company immediately borrowed $465 million at a weighted average interest rate of 5.54%, using $431.7 million to retire the 2022 credit agreement. As of 5 October 2026, Werner's total debt stood at $840 million, with $603.1 million in remaining borrowing capacity available for capital expenditures, acquisitions and general corporate purposes. The facility includes leverage-linked covenants and financial tests on leverage and interest coverage. Any breach could trigger default provisions, potentially accelerating repayment obligations.

US truckload capacity crunch intensifies as regulatory crackdown forces thousands of carriers from market

The US truckload trucking industry is experiencing a significant capacity reduction, with carrier executives saying the correction is still in its "early innings". Regulatory crackdowns, economic weakness, rising diesel prices, and a Supreme Court broker liability ruling have forced numerous small and midsize fleets to exit the market. Jim Filter, CEO of Schneider National, said his company's brokerage unit has reduced its approved carrier list to 14,000 from 60,000 at peak. He noted that thousands of drivers who entered during the previous upcycle lacked proper training and acquired authority unlawfully. Werner Enterprises expects capacity constraints to tighten further. The company forecasts a 10% to 13% year-over-year increase in one-way rates during the third quarter and anticipates "strong" contractual rate increases in the upcoming 2027 bid season. Both carriers report stable demand, with shippers competing to secure capacity ahead of peak season.
