Responsibilities
  • Manage the consolidation of offer costing and pricing across product and programme perimeters.
  • Drive convergence of costs and prices toward the Target Must Cost.
  • Manage stakeholders from Engineering, Operations, Commercial, Programme, Procurement, and other functions who contribute to costs.
  • Own the offer cost brochure, comprising a comprehensive description of deliverables and the related detailed costing file.
  • Ensure consistency between technical, industrial, commercial, and programmatic baselines and the costing and pricing assumptions for the complete project.
  • Manage the financial elements of offers, calculate final prices, and integrate them into the relevant decision gates, including MG3 and RMC.
  • Promote Cost Engineering capabilities within Airbus Defence and Space.
  • Manage cost model configuration and updates with the relevant cost owners, including structured databases and parametric approaches supporting project, programme, or equipment costing.
  • Manage cost references by collecting actuals from running projects and identifying and evaluating changes from previous runs with project staffing, including CCNs, waterfall, and revenue, MR, and TC evolution.
  • Prepare and update deviation and cost evolution reports using Airbus templates.
  • Prepare inputs for the benchmark database using the TARGET/Excel input format for cost reference inputs.
  • Perform independent cost estimates of systems and subsystems using analytic, parametric, or similarity approaches to secure bottom-up quotations with a third-party approach.
  • Explain and guide costing results to support gap analysis and identify risks and opportunities.
  • Coordinate activities to ensure accurate and timely quotation deliveries by cost owners.
  • Deliver should-cost estimates to support convergence toward TMC/TMP and support senior bid representatives.
  • Align internal customer needs closely with the cost engineering support provided.
  • Determine cost-estimation approaches and define the resources needed to execute each estimation.
  • Deliver the bid cost brochure, including assumptions and deliverables aligned with consolidated costing, for the Industrial and Cost review.
  • Prepare pricing and all financial entries for offer decision gates, including MGs and RMC.
  • Support the Pricing team in finalising commercial offers through contract signature.
  • Manage the transition from costing to Programme EAC after programme kick-off.
  • Prepare and synthesise assumptions for independent cost estimates, generating consistent assumptions in agreement with programmes when inputs are partial.
  • Compile and deliver cost engineering files to internal customers, explaining rationale and cost impacts related to assumptions.
  • Consolidate cost estimates from different cost engineering domains and deliver them to internal customers.
  • Support programmes in cost-target setting and negotiation or buy-in with stakeholders.
  • Support programmes in challenging, assessing, and negotiating costs from suppliers or internal cost owners.
  • Analyse variance between the cost engineering view and other estimation sources and support reconciliation and negotiation.
  • Secure knowledge management on cost evolution and customer requests.
  • Act as senior support for the team and establish costing support activities for Airbus GBS.

Airbus tests US-built Valkyrie drone in Europe, eyes 2029 delivery at about $22M per unit

Airbus has flown a US-built Valkyrie drone in Europe for the first time, aiming to show that regulatory barriers to military drones in European airspace can be overcome. The September 29 flight over northern Europe did not yet include Airbus' European mission system, said Michael Schoellhorn, chief executive officer of Airbus Defence and Space. The drone, developed by US-based Kratos Defense, reached Mach 0.8. Airbus hopes to team it with Eurofighter jets and supply the German Air Force with combat drones by 2029. The next test flight, with Airbus' MARS Mission System on board, is expected in the first quarter of 2027. A first flight with a Eurofighter is scheduled later that year. Schoellhorn put the cost at around €20 million per unit and estimated German needs at around 500 drones.

Airbus A350F freighter completes maiden flight with 4.3m cargo door for servers

Airbus has successfully completed the first flight of its A350F freighter, bringing the aerospace giant closer to delivering a high-capacity cargo aircraft. The plane took off from Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France, flying for four hours and ten minutes and reaching 25,000 feet. The A350F can carry a payload of 109 tonnes, compared to 64 tonnes for the existing A330F. It features a 4.3-metre cargo door large enough to accommodate turbofan engines and high-density computer servers. Airbus claims the A350F is more efficient than Boeing's rival 777F, despite having slightly less capacity. The company has already received orders for 115 A350Fs. A second test aircraft is nearly complete as Airbus begins the certification process requiring hundreds of test flights.

Airbus and Qantas back $30M funding for Australian SAF developer Jet Zero

Jet Zero Australia has raised $30 million to advance Project Ulysses, a commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel refinery in Townsville. The funding round was backed by institutional investors including Qantas and Airbus, both returning investors from 2023. South Korean company Posco International joined as a new strategic investor, with the parties exploring opportunities in fuel offtake, infrastructure and feedstock. The capital will fund completion of Front-End Engineering Design and support the project's progress towards Final Investment Decision and construction. Founded in 2021 by Ed Mason, Jet Zero develops biofuels production capacity in regional Australia. The project has received its final Development Permit Decision Notice from Queensland's Office of the Coordinator-General. It is expected to create approximately 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent operational roles.
