Apple builds China-specific AI model with Alibaba to launch in coming months

Apple has developed a China-specific large language model in collaboration with Alibaba Group, according to Reuters. This marks a shift from Apple's previous strategy of relying on external partners' AI models for its Chinese devices. The move positions Apple as potentially the first foreign company approved by Beijing to deploy its own proprietary AI model in China. Apple Intelligence, the company's AI suite, is expected to launch in China following an upcoming iOS update. China's Cyberspace Administration registered Apple's generative AI service last month, clearing the way for the rollout. Alibaba confirmed its Qwen model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for Chinese users. The partnership became public in February when Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai revealed Apple had selected Alibaba after considering multiple Chinese companies.

Apple launches ads in Maps with 15% credit for early US and Canadian advertisers

Apple has launched its "Ads on Maps" platform in the United States and Canada, allowing businesses to purchase advertising space within Apple Maps. The platform enables advertisers to upload photos, add promotional messages, and set budgets without minimum spending requirements. To incentivise early adoption, businesses purchasing ads via credit card by 11 October 2026 will receive a 15% monthly credit — up to $1,000 monthly — applicable to the following month's spend during the first year. Apple reports that over one billion business searches occur monthly on Apple Maps, with half resulting in user action. Gen Z and millennials comprise 57% of Apple Maps users. Businesses with five or fewer locations can purchase ads directly through Apple Business using automated tools. Larger businesses and existing Apple Ads advertisers will use the Apple Ads platform. Certain business categories, including home services like plumbing and electrical work, are prohibited from advertising.

Apple opens Houston manufacturing centre, to produce Mac mini in US as part of $600B commitment

Apple has opened a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston, Texas, where it will begin producing Mac mini computers later this year. The facility will provide free training to small and midsized businesses, workers, and students on advanced manufacturing techniques. CEO Tim Cook said Apple has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into the Houston facility over less than nine months. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick thanked Apple for its $600 billion commitment to America, stating that President Trump wanted to bring advanced technology manufacturing back to the country. The tech giant has pledged $600 billion to US investments over four years, focusing on domestic production of chips and components. Apple sourced more than 20 billion chips from US suppliers last year.

Apple faces Siri benchmark as Google debuts deeply integrated Gemini AI on Pixel 11

Google has unveiled its Pixel 11 series with Gemini Intelligence deeply integrated into the smartphone experience, creating a new benchmark for Apple's upcoming Siri overhaul. The AI assistant can comprehend user activity across messaging, calendars, maps and other services to help take action. This development is significant as Apple is expected to launch an overhauled Siri powered partly by Google's Gemini models. Google's products director Rick Osterloh told CNBC that Pixel and iPhone are heading in "very different directions", with AI potentially becoming the primary way people use devices. For Apple, the challenge lies not in model quality but integration. Since both companies may use the same AI technology, the competitive advantage will depend on how effectively each links that intelligence to their operating system, apps and device ecosystem.

Apple commits $60B to Texas as part of US investment push

Apple is directing $60 billion of its US investment towards Texas, according to CEO Tim Cook and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The tech giant is expanding its American chip supply chain and plans to manufacture the Mac mini in Houston. The announcement represents a significant portion of Apple's broader US investment strategy. By establishing Mac mini production in Texas, the company is increasing its domestic manufacturing footprint beyond its existing operations. The move aligns with growing pressure on technology companies to bring more production back to the United States. Apple's investment in Texas will support both semiconductor supply chain development and direct manufacturing activities.
