About the job

Requirements
  • You have shipped and owned a consumer iOS app used by millions, and can identify what you personally built in it.
  • You have deep experience with Swift and the Apple platform, including Swift 6 concurrency, networking, background execution, location, push notifications, camera, and video.
  • You have worked with The Composable Architecture or a comparable unidirectional architecture at scale, and in a modular Swift Package Manager codebase.
  • You have run a release, including continuous integration, beta distribution, phased rollout, crash triage, and hotfixes.
  • You have worked on real-time or live media and understand latency, jitter, and the effects of poor network conditions.
  • You already build with AI agents, have replaced substantial parts of your workflow with agents, understand their limitations, and follow developments in the field.
  • You measure outcomes, instrument before evaluating, and verify that events reach the data warehouse.
  • You want to drive work and take ownership, not only build to a direction.
  • You care about the safety mission and the impact of the app on users.
  • You want to work in the New York office every day.
Responsibilities
  • Own a real piece of the core product, selected according to team needs and priorities, and take ownership of new features and product surfaces that support company growth.
  • Build live-video and broadcast capabilities for capturing, uploading, and playing video from a scene, including a one-tap live-broadcast flow, with low latency and reliability under real network conditions.
  • Build real-time alerts and map functionality, including fast push notifications, accurate and battery-aware location and geofencing, and maps that remain fast with thousands of live incidents.
  • Build and improve the paid experience, including Premium, Protect, onboarding, paywalls, and experiments in partnership with Design and Product.
  • Build and maintain the internal iOS operator tool used by Mission Control.
  • Own app health and release quality, including cold start, battery, memory, crash-free sessions, phased rollouts, crash triage, hotfixes, and participation in the weekly Release Captain rotation.
  • Register analytics events with the data team, verify that they reach the warehouse, and ensure reported funnel data accurately reflects app activity.
  • Take over and extend the iOS code-agent workflows, propose where agents can run autonomously, and improve their output quality while respecting production safety gates.
  • Work daily with backend on real-time contracts, with Design and Product on product decisions, with Data on events, and with Mission Control as an internal user.
  • Use the app daily in New York during the first 30 days, go live, learn the codebase, ship to production in week one, shadow a Release Captain, identify the three most harmful user problems, and begin addressing one.
  • By days 31–60, run a Release Captain week independently, drive an initiative end to end, deliver a measurable performance or reliability improvement, take over and extend an existing agent loop, and propose an initial autonomous agent workflow for test generation or code review.
  • By days 61–90, ship the first piece of the reinvented product to users and present a metrics-backed roadmap for owned product areas.
  • Own plans and improvements for crash-free sessions, cold start, battery impact, alert-to-notification time, live-video start time, release cadence, high-priority fix turnaround, retention, paid conversion, event coverage and accuracy, and idea-to-App-Store cycle time.

About the company

Citizen provides a mobile app that delivers real-time safety alerts from 911 calls and user reports to individuals, families, and communities. The app notifies users within seconds about emergencies and nearby incidents, helping people avoid danger and stay informed. It also lets users broadcast live video or updates, connect with family and neighbors, and contribute to situational awareness. The product works by aggregating official 911 information and user-generated content to publish fast, local alerts, with options to share live video and messages. This makes Citizen different from others by emphasizing crowdsourced, real-time information and community-based safety, rather than relying solely on traditional emergency channels. The goal is to improve personal and communal safety by providing fast, accurate, location-based information that helps people react quickly and coordinate responses.

Real-Time safety app Citizen expands international footprint with launch in Mexico.

Real-Time safety app Citizen expands international footprint with launch in Mexico. Apr 14, 2026, 10:34 ET Following its first international expansion into Canada, Citizen brings verified, real-time safety alerts, live video, and community-powered reporting to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Tijuana. MEXICO CITY, April 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Citizen, the leading public safety app in the U.S., is proud to announce its expansion across three major cities in Mexico: Mexico City, Tijuana, and Guadalajara. Citizen uses proprietary, AI-powered technology to provide residents with real-time information about safety-related events, big and small. The app relies on verified sources and user-generated content to give members the information they need to make smarter decisions about their safety and the safety of their loved ones. People who download the Citizen app will have immediate access to real-time alerts, live video streams, and community reporting based on their exact location. Citizen also offers tailored safety features, including push notification controls, the ability to view historical incidents, one-tap access to Mexico's national emergency number (911), and Protect Mode, which allows users to share their real-time location with trusted contacts. The app is fully localized in Spanish. "After launching in major cities across the U.S. and Canada, we're excited to further expand our international footprint. Our expansion into Mexico marks a significant milestone in fulfilling Citizen's mission to bring essential safety information to people around the world." - Morgan Mathiesen, Head of Operations, Citizen Citizen's value was demonstrated firsthand earlier this year when civil unrest swept across Mexico following a major military operation in February 2026. The killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, triggered widespread roadblocks, burning vehicles, and security incidents across multiple Mexican states, including Jalisco, Baja California, Quintana Roo, Guerrero, and Michoacán. As the situation developed in real time, Citizen tracked and verified the unfolding events, alerting users in impacted areas, aggregating verified updates on road closures and flight disruptions, and helping residents and travelers make informed decisions about their safety. Citizen is now available to Android users in Mexico on the Google Play Store. Citizen is committed to growing a global community of people protecting each other.
