About the company

Canva launches Craft, its first in-house image model, to rival Google, OpenAI and Meta

Canva has released Canva Craft, its first image generation model, built by its research team to compete with models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance, and Meta. It is available to all users through the Dream Lab tab and will come to the Canva API. The model works in two stages: it first plans the layout, scale, hierarchy, and text, then generates images of up to 2K resolution in 30 aspect ratios. Canva says this yields accurate details, legible text, and precise edits that leave the rest of the image untouched. It was trained on human-designed templates from Canva's library rather than photographs. Researchers from Leonardo.ai, which Canva acquired in 2024, contributed. Canva is also developing two cheaper versions, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast. The company was on track for $4 billion in revenue last year.

Three in four Americans think most people want the same things, USA Goals finds

Canva and the Ad Council Research Institute have released the first findings from USA Goals, a study drawing on more than 40,000 goals from 15,000 Americans. Three in four Americans believe most people want the same basic things for themselves and their families. Seven in ten say improving their community matters to them, but fewer than half say they have a clear path forward. Kindness, safety, connection, and peace were the most common hopes. Optimism is highest locally: 64% are hopeful about their community's future, against 48% for the country and 40% for the world. Yet only 49% say they are very likely to get involved in improving their community. Canva's first city-level pilot is live in Wollongong, Australia, with local government.

Canva cuts revenue growth forecast by a third as AI costs force rollout slowdown

Canva has cut its revenue growth forecast by a third to 20% after unexpectedly high AI costs forced the design-software company to slow its rollout of generative AI features. CEO Melanie Perkins said user demand for AI features "significantly exceeded" expectations, prompting Canva to rebuild its architecture and reduce unit costs before a broader rollout. The company has reduced cost per AI task by nearly 90% since launching Canva AI 2.0 in April. The issue reflects a wider challenge across the software industry. AI is breaking the traditional software-as-a-service model by introducing substantial recurring inference costs, undermining the zero-marginal-cost economics that previously drove profitability. Figma faces similar pressures, with its free-cash-flow margin falling from 27% to 14% between the first and second quarters. The timing is significant as Canva evaluates a potential IPO following a $42 billion employee share sale valuation last year.
