Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Healthcare or a related field and at least six months of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or supporting adults or children with complex social-emotional, mental health, medical or behavior support needs in a group or individual setting; or a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of relevant experience including or supplemented by six months of supervisory or lead experience; or at least four years of experience in a direct care role in a YAI program in good standing.
  • Hold foundational certifications for the current service setting, including Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised, cardiopulmonary resuscitation issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and YAI-issued Approved Medication Administration Personnel certification for residential assignments or Day Services Model Mentorship Training for day assignments.
  • Maintain foundational certifications and any required program-specific certifications, obtaining applicable certifications within the stated appointment timelines when changing programs or settings.
  • Be at least 18 years old if newly hired and obtain and maintain required YAI certifications based on the setting within six months of appointment.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to document services, summarize progress, and convey information across organizational levels and with external providers or circles of support.
  • Be able and willing to lead, direct, and teach others technical skills and knowledge on the job and through formal training.
  • Be proficient with computers and Microsoft Office Suite and able to learn Workday and electronic medical record and documentation systems.
  • Be willing to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and assist with supports and activities of daily living, including exposure to bodily fluids in accordance with documented plans.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities while addressing changing needs in collaboration with program leadership.
  • Be able to work beyond regularly scheduled hours and report as scheduled on holidays, during inclement weather, or during emergencies when needed to maintain program coverage.
  • Remain calm, act assertively, and exercise professional competence and judgment in stressful situations involving challenging individuals or behaviors.
  • For assignments involving transportation, hold or obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and van certification.
  • Meet the stated physical demands, including walking, sitting, standing, bending, lifting or moving individuals with appropriate assistance or equipment, and implementing emergency interventions as required by Behavior Support Plans.
Responsibilities
  • Perform the duties of a Direct Support Professional to supervise, protect, and care for people supported in the assigned program while facilitating activities and community connections.
  • Ensure the health, wellness, and safety of people supported; lead during crisis situations; de-escalate incidents; and direct Direct Support Professionals in accordance with policies, procedures, regulations, and Office for People With Developmental Disabilities competencies.
  • Implement person-centered individualized plans, protective oversight plans, Behavior Support Plans, Staff Action Plans, and Life Plans, and model and train direct care staff on their interventions and goals.
  • Assist the Program Supervisor with staffing and coverage, including entering and modifying schedules, securing shift coverage, accounting for absences and operational needs, and escalating staffing concerns.
  • Assist with oversight of program financial systems by maintaining personal ledgers and expenditure records, monitoring and reconciling petty cash, entering data, reviewing receipts, and completing electronic transmittals.
  • Coordinate supply needs, including maintaining, ordering, and documenting food, household, toiletry, and over-the-counter medication inventory and storage.
  • Report facility maintenance, upkeep, and safety concerns and assist with coordinating resolutions.
  • Support facility-related checks by reviewing logs and records, tracking documentation, and following up to obtain information about vehicle maintenance, inspections, fire drills, and other requirements.
  • Assist the Program Supervisor with completing and documenting required staff training, education, and credentials in electronic and paper files.
  • Provide shift leadership in the absence of the Program Supervisor, including assigning duties, assessing work performance, identifying operational or staff issues, making decisions, escalating concerns, and temporarily performing direct-care leadership duties when needed.
  • Complete and maintain required training and certifications and apply the associated skills.
  • Participate in committees, serve as a liaison for the program or region, and support special projects and agency-wide initiatives when assigned.
  • Facilitate formal agency training under supervision using prescribed curricula when certified as a trainer.
  • Operate a YAI motor vehicle to transport individuals when required by the assignment.
  • Comply with Federal, State, Local, and other regulatory requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is highly preferred for assignments in areas with limited public transportation.
  • Lead experience as a Direct Support Professional and/or supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or supervisory experience in a related area.
