Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

Meta has rolled out three new ad tools for brand marketers, including Ads Super Burst, which advertisers in India, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia have already used. The company also introduced Aggregated View Time, a metric that measures total viewing time across all videos in a campaign. Meta's internal research found it predicts outcomes for brand advertisers better than single long views.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1% on Thursday as investors moved out of chip stocks and into defensive sectors. The S&P 500 gained 0.3%, while the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.1%. September producer prices rose 1.3% on the month and 6.3% year over year, the sharpest rises since 2022. Together with hot consumer price data, this raised fears of a Federal Reserve rate hike. Worries over AI spending and CoreWeave's debt also weighed on tech. Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang dismissed concerns about CoreWeave's financial health and said the chipmaker has no plans to mount a rescue. PepsiCo shares slipped 1% after KFC US chose Coca-Cola for its beverage partnership.
Meta Platforms and Apple have announced a partnership to produce an open-source AI model. The companies plan to run Meta's new Muse Spark Open model on Mac products. Analysts on a Yahoo Finance panel said the deal could restart the iPhone upgrade cycle. Many users now keep older phones for years, but running AI agents locally would need newer chips and more memory. Futurum chief market strategist Shay Boloor said install bases are the biggest moat in the new AI economy, and few firms match Apple and Meta. He noted Apple trades at about 40 times earnings, so the market may already expect this future. Shares of both companies moved higher in a down tech market.
Apple and Meta are working together to let developers run Meta's Muse Spark Open AI model locally on high-end Mac computers. The two longtime rivals announced the collaboration on Thursday. Muse Spark Open is an 816-billion-parameter, open-weight model. Users can pair two to four Mac Studio PCs to code, analyse video, or do other agentic work. Running it locally adds security and saves money, the companies said. The model needs the M5 Ultra chip. A Mac Studio with 256GB of memory costs at least $10,799, and users must buy several machines. Apple and Meta declined to say whether the deal signals a deeper relationship.
Apple and Meta are shifting smart home AI from hardware sales to metered subscriptions, according to their own published terms. Meta already charges for its Muse agent. A free tier refreshes weekly, a Power plan costs $20 a month for 500M tokens per week, and a Maximum plan costs $100 a month for 3B tokens per week. Apple has only signalled the change. Footnotes on its HomeView and HomePod mini 2 releases say some Apple Intelligence features face daily usage limits, with expanded access "available for a fee in the future." It gives no price or date. HomeView costs $299.
