About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while remaining hands-on.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM), Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
  • Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
  • Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them, including what cannot be covered by tests.
  • Experience introducing a change or practice that a team continued using after the candidate stopped advocating for it, and ability to explain the cost of implementing it.
  • Comfort asking people to change how they work and handling the resulting friction.
  • Ability to determine which changes need heavy review and which do not, based on system behavior.
  • Track record of building things used by the rest of the team, not only things that improve the candidate’s own efficiency.
  • Ability to describe how the team works with artificial intelligence agents.
  • Product design intuition, user empathy, and drive to improve Android user interface and user experience beyond specifications.
  • Self-drive to improve the app and codebase beyond what is outlined in specifications.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Own major features end to end, working closely with the design team from decision through release.
  • Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features.
  • Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback that helps colleagues learn.
  • Unblock teammates by investigating and addressing obstacles.
  • Identify solutions that should become the team's shared approach and drive their adoption.
  • Maintain shared components so they are tested, understandable, and consolidated when duplicate implementations arise.
  • Identify when the team should change how it works and initiate that change.
  • Reduce manual intervention needed to produce a correct release.
  • Address recurring problems by changing the underlying setup to prevent recurrence.
  • Shift verification earlier by expanding automated checks so nightly builds sent to quality assurance confirm correctness rather than reveal issues for the first time.
  • Run planning so the team's attention is focused on work that still needs decisions.
  • Determine the appropriate level of review for each area, including where sign-off is always required.
  • Participate in discussions across Product, Design, and Engineering, and communicate the team's constraints early.
  • Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for the quality assurance team.
  • Ensure early-career colleagues receive work they can learn from and time to learn from it.
Desired Qualifications
  • Building, maintaining, or contributing to open-source Android projects.
  • Experience with iOS, web, or Node.js.

About the company

Speechify builds voice software for people who prefer listening to written material and for creators producing spoken content. Its Reader turns documents, web pages, and photographed text into audio across mobile apps, desktop software, and browser extensions. Speechify Studio generates editable voiceovers and translates video dialogue through AI dubbing, while a separate developer API adds synthetic speech to other applications. Creators adjust voice pitch and pace, and developers choose voices and stream audio into their own products. The company sells Reader subscriptions and separately billed Studio and API plans, including paid usage for developers, and was founded in 2017.

  • Speechify asks readers to pay for quality: Premium costs $29 monthly while the free tier has robotic voices.
  • Speechify Android leads carry release duties: the listed role requires critical-issue handling and nightly builds for quality checks.

What makes Speechify unique

  • Speechify has recognizable narrators: official voice partners include Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow.
  • Speechify began with personal accessibility needs: founder Cliff Weitzman built the reader to overcome his dyslexia.
  • Speechify owns speech technology: its Simba family pairs English voice cloning with a separate multilingual model.

The new feature includes AI-powered auto-editing and promises zero typos. Speechify launches Windows app with on-device AI for transcription and dictation

Speechify has launched a native Windows app using locally stored AI models for transcription and dictation across applications. The app can read aloud articles, documents and PDFs using the company's voice library. The Windows app processes voice entirely on-device on Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11 machines with compatible GPUs from Intel and AMD. It runs three on-device models: neural text-to-speech, real-time voice activity detection using the open-source Silero model, and Whisper-powered transcription. Users can switch to cloud-based models during usage. Speechify, which has over 50 million users, is competing with dictation apps like Wispr Flow and Superwhisper. The company recently expanded beyond text-to-speech into meeting transcription and voice assistance, positioning itself as a comprehensive voice application platform.
