About the company

Practical Farmers of Iowa

View

Practical Farmers of Iowa is a member-based nonprofit that supports farmers by organizing farmer-led on-farm research, education, and technical assistance to build resilient farms and communities. Its programs work through field days, workshops, cost-share incentives for practices like cover crops and grazing infrastructure, and services such as land matching, mentorship for beginning farmers, and the Sustainable Agriculture Business Incubator (SABI), which helps agricultural entrepreneurs with business planning, coaching, and access to capital. The organization differs from many peers by its farmer-led governance (most board members are farmers), emphasis on practical on-farm research and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, and a broad member network that includes conventional and organic systems. Its goal is to improve economic viability and ecological sustainability of farms while strengthening rural communities.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • PFI launched 2026 cover-crop cost-share at $15 per acre, unlimited acres.
  • More than 60 Midwest field days run through November 2026, expanding reach.
  • 38 farmers are testing fieldwork-window gains, strengthening evidence-based farmer recruitment.

What critics are saying

  • PFI depends on PepsiCo and Cargill funding for 2026 cover-crop cost-share.
  • Enrollment is first-come, first-served, so funded programs can close once acres fill.
  • A funding disruption would shrink cost-share scale and weaken farmer acquisition fast.

What makes Practical Farmers of Iowa unique

  • Farmer-led governance persists: 10 of 12 directors must be farmers in 2026.
  • PFI reached 9,912 members in 2025, reinforcing a rare peer-network moat.
  • Its on-farm research plus field days create trusted, localized agronomy infrastructure.
