Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Healthcare or a related field and at least six months of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or supporting adults or children with complex social-emotional, mental health, medical or behavior support needs in a group or individual setting; or a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or in a related human services or healthcare role, including or supplemented by six months of supervisory or lead experience involving administrative and scheduling support duties and directing staff; or at least four years of experience in a direct care role in a YAI program in good standing.
  • Current foundational certifications must include Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and either YAI-issued Approved Medication Administration Personnel certification for residential assignments or Day Services Model Mentorship Training for day assignments.
  • Newly hired employees must obtain and maintain required YAI certifications based on the setting and program within six months of appointment; applicable certifications must be obtained within three months when changing programs or settings.
  • Employees must maintain foundational and program-specific certifications.
  • Employees must be at least 18 years old if newly hired.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, including the ability to document services provided, summarize progress, and convey information across organizational levels and with external providers or circles of support.
  • The ability and willingness to lead, direct, and teach others technical skills and knowledge in on-the-job and formal group or individual training settings is required.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite, plus the ability to learn Workday and electronic medical record and documentation systems, is required.
  • Candidates must be willing to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and assist with supports and activities of daily living, including exposure to and handling of bodily fluids in accordance with documented plans.
  • Candidates must manage multiple tasks and priorities while addressing changing needs with program leadership.
  • Candidates must be able to work beyond regularly scheduled hours and report as scheduled on holidays, during inclement weather, or during emergencies when needed for minimum coverage.
  • Candidates must remain calm, act assertively, and exercise professional competence and judgment in stressful situations involving challenging individuals or behaviors.
  • For assignments involving transportation, candidates must hold or obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and van certification.
  • Candidates must meet the physical demands of frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling objects and controls, assisting with lifting or moving individuals, and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Responsibilities
  • Perform the duties of a Direct Support Professional to supervise, protect, and care for people supported in the assigned program while facilitating activities and community connections.
  • Provide supervision and lead crisis-response efforts, de-escalate situations, demonstrate applicable competencies, and direct Direct Support Professionals in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Implement person-centered plans, individualized plans, protective oversight, Behavior Support Plans, Staff Action Plans, and Life Plans, and model and train staff on their interventions and goals.
  • Assist the Program Supervisor with staffing and coverage by entering and modifying electronic schedules, securing shift coverage, and escalating staffing concerns.
  • Assist with financial-system oversight by maintaining personal ledgers and expenditure records, reconciling petty cash, entering data, reviewing receipts, and completing electronic transmittals.
  • Coordinate supply needs, including maintaining, ordering, documenting, and storing food, household, toiletry, and over-the-counter medication supplies.
  • Report facility maintenance, upkeep, and safety concerns and assist with coordinating resolutions.
  • Support facility checks by reviewing logs, files, and folders and tracking or obtaining documentation such as vehicle maintenance records, inspections, and fire-drill records.
  • Assist with completing and documenting required staff training, education, and credentials in electronic and paper files.
  • Serve as the shift lead in the absence of the Program Supervisor, including assigning duties, assessing work performance, identifying operational or staff issues, making informed decisions, escalating concerns, and temporarily performing direct-care leadership duties when needed.
  • Complete and maintain required training and certifications and apply the associated skills.
  • Participate in committees, serve as a liaison for the program or region, and participate in special projects and agency-wide initiatives when assigned.
  • Facilitate formal agency training under supervision using prescribed curricula when assigned as a certified trainer.
  • Operate a YAI motor vehicle to transport supported individuals when required by the assignment.
  • Comply with Federal, State, Local, and other applicable regulatory requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is highly preferred for assignments in areas with limited public transportation.
  • Lead experience as a Direct Support Professional and/or supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or supervisory experience in a related area.

Yai's Manhattan Star Academy (MSA) is a private, non-profit day school within the YAI Network that serves students aged 3 to 21 with developmental disabilities. It combines academics with therapies (occupational, physical, speech, counseling) in a Montessori-inspired, developmentally based curriculum, using small classes and sensory-friendly facilities with technology to track progress. The school includes a transition and vocational program to prepare students for life after graduation. Its differentiators are the integrated therapeutic model, a specialized environment for neuro-developmental needs, and a continuous education path from early years through post-secondary readiness.
