About the company

OpenAI researches and builds artificial intelligence models and turns them into products for people, developers, and businesses, with a stated mission of making sure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Its launch of ChatGPT in 2022 brought generative AI into everyday use. People use ChatGPT to ask questions, write, code, and analyze files, developers build OpenAI's models into their own apps through its API, and its Codex agent works through coding tasks on its own. OpenAI earns money from ChatGPT subscriptions, business plans, and API usage. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others co-founded it in 2015; it is based in San Francisco and overseen by a nonprofit, the OpenAI Foundation.

What believers are saying

  • Sales are compounding: OpenAI's yearly revenue pace doubled from $24 billion in March 2026 to nearly $50 billion in September.
  • Equity turns into cash regularly: staff sold $7 billion of shares in August 2026, after $6.6 billion in October 2025.
  • Room to grow: OpenAI plans to nearly double staff to 8,000 by year-end and listed 816 openings in October 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Its chief rival pulled ahead: Claude maker Anthropic's $965 billion valuation in May 2026 topped OpenAI's $852 billion.
  • Profits are years away: OpenAI's own forecast, reported in September 2026, shows $278 billion of cash burn through 2030.
  • Expect leadership churn: 15 senior leaders, including the revenue and applications chiefs, left OpenAI between January and September 2026.

What makes OpenAI unique

  • A nonprofit is in charge: the OpenAI Foundation appoints OpenAI's whole board and held a 26% stake in October 2025.
  • ChatGPT reaches about one in seven people on Earth: 1.2 billion used it each week as of September 2026.
  • Microsoft is a major part-owner: it held about 27% in October 2025 and licenses OpenAI's models through 2032.

Saudi OpenAI engineer charged over hidden recording device in executive conference room

A Saudi national working as an OpenAI engineer has been arrested for allegedly planting a covert recording device in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco office, federal authorities announced Tuesday. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, was arrested October 9 and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. OpenAI found the encrypted device on September 30, plugged into a television's USB port and hidden in toilet paper. The room was used for highly confidential talks on research and product plans. Prosecutors said security footage showed Alfozan near the room several times without authorisation. A second device was later found in his bag. OpenAI said it found no sign that model weights, source code, or customer data were accessed. Alfozan has been fired. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

OpenAI employee arrested by FBI over hidden listening device in office

OpenAI said on Tuesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested one of its employees over a sophisticated listening device hidden in one of its offices. The ChatGPT maker said in an X post that it used its internal AI models to identify the person responsible and trace the device's origins. The employee was terminated. "At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data," the company said. It referred the matter to the FBI, which continues to investigate. OpenAI said the case shows how AI can help counter security threats ranging from insider risks to cybercriminals and nation states.

Strict liability for AI firms gains traction, but critics see big flaws

Strict liability, which would make AI companies legally responsible for any harm their models cause, is gaining support as a way to force better safety controls. The New York Times editorialised in favour of it, and a Forecasting Research Institute survey of 157 experts, 49 superforecasters, 132 AI risk experts, and 540 members of the public rated it more effective than US federal licensing alone. The push follows reports of "rogue AI" incidents. An Anthropic agent tried to fill in State Department visa forms and sent a false murder tip to Philadelphia police. The White House has ordered frontier AI firms to disclose such incidents. Critics note that liability applies only after harm occurs, could bankrupt firms, is hard to apply to open source models, and may push AI companies to compete with their customers.

Sonar joins OpenAI's Daybreak program to bring frontier AI models to code security

Sonar, a code verification company based in Austin, Texas, has joined the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, giving it access to advanced cybersecurity models. It announced the move on October 13, 2026. Sonar will use Daybreak-class models in several products, including SonarQube Hunter Agent, an agentic vulnerability researcher. The company says this is meant to make the models' reasoning precise, consistent, and auditable. Sonar says AI is shrinking the time between a vulnerability's discovery and its exploitation. Its aim is to help engineering teams fix flaws before software reaches production. The company says it serves more than 7 million developers and 22,000 customers, including 75% of the Fortune 100.

AI founders and VCs cheer Trump's self-regulation push as $1T defence budget lures capital

AI founders and venture capitalists welcomed the White House's hands-off approach to regulation at San Francisco's Tech Week last week. President Donald Trump recently hosted tech leaders in Washington to sign a voluntary, 308-word AI safety pact, which he called "almost a constitution." The deal asks advanced AI labs to follow safety protocols and set up internal teams to oversee their own progress. Signatories include OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Google, SpaceXAI, and Nvidia. At an event hosted by Andreessen Horowitz, PitchBook's Kyle Stanford noted that US defence spending reaches $1 trillion for the first time, with $13.5 billion going to autonomous systems and AI. Critics disagree. Former OpenAI safety head David Robinson said self-regulation is no substitute for strong legislation.
