About the job

Requirements
  • At least 15 years of related engineering experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems, enterprise platforms, workflow systems, data-intensive products, integration frameworks, or cloud-scale infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of system design for scale, reliability, observability, fault tolerance, data quality, security, and production readiness.
  • Strong technical depth in Java, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Ability to define technical direction, influence architecture across teams, and translate ambiguous product strategy into executable engineering plans.
  • Ability to operate as a Principal individual contributor by leading through technical credibility, collaboration, and influence rather than formal authority.
  • Strong judgment in balancing long-term architecture with pragmatic execution, customer impact, engineering velocity, and business priorities.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers, raising engineering standards, and building reusable patterns that create leverage across teams.
  • Ability to reason about AI-assisted enterprise workflows, including data quality, workflow correctness, evaluation, observability, safety controls, and human-in-the-loop review.
Responsibilities
  • Lead architecture and technical strategy for assigned problem areas within ITSM/ITOM products, working with product and engineering leaders to understand blockers and opportunities around AI-native evolution and value realization.
  • Contribute hands-on to spiking and shipping solutions; validate architectural hypotheses through code, build prototypes, reference implementations, and critical path components to prove feasibility and guide teams.
  • Design and validate solutions through evidence-based spiking by formulating hypotheses, running experiments, measuring outcomes, and using data to guide architectural decisions and product direction.
  • Architect the evolution of current solutions toward AI-native capabilities by identifying where agentic patterns, data utilization, or autonomous workflows can unlock customer value, and translate architectural recommendations into executable work.
  • Identify and address value realization gaps in agentic products that are not delivering expected outcomes; work with teams to diagnose root causes including architecture, user experience, data quality, feedback loops, and cost, and recommend targeted improvements.
  • Establish architecture patterns and best practices specific to the problem domain, and document tradeoffs, rationale, and implementation guidance to help teams move faster and make consistent decisions.
  • Guide teams through complex technical decisions and design reviews, challenge assumptions with data, surface architectural risks early, and help teams navigate tradeoffs between shipping speed and long-term durability.
  • Collaborate across ITSM/ITOM engineering teams to share learnings, validate approaches, and accelerate adoption of effective patterns.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with AI-powered products, automation platforms, AI-assisted workflows, or agentic systems is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with enterprise service management, IT operations, CMDB, discovery, service mapping, AIOps, observability, workflow automation, endpoint management, or operational intelligence is a strong plus.
  • Experience working with large-scale enterprise customers, production systems, and complex migration or modernization efforts is a plus.

What believers are saying

  • Subscriptions grew: ServiceNow reported $3.877 billion in subscription revenue for the June 2026 quarter, up 24.5% year over year.
  • Hybrid work is established: ServiceNow says most staff have flexible arrangements, requiring two or more office days weekly.
  • Security work expanded: the April 2026 Armis acquisition added protection for industrial equipment, medical devices, and connected hardware.

What critics are saying

  • Subscription margins narrowed: in June 2026, ServiceNow kept 73.5% of subscription revenue after direct costs, versus 80% a year earlier.
  • Remote roles limit relocation: ServiceNow requires staff to remain within their employment state, province, region, or country.
  • Older versions lose support: ServiceNow supports two release families and schedules upgrades for customers who fall behind.

What makes ServiceNow unique

Over 25% of S&P 500 stocks are down 40%+: four bargain tech picks, from Netflix to Oracle

More than 25% of S&P 500 stocks are down 40% or more from their highs, even with the index near record levels, as of October 8, 2026. The Motley Fool sees that as a chance to hunt for bargains in tech. It names four picks. Netflix trades at about 18.5 times 2027 analyst earnings estimates, and advertising should drive its growth. Oracle has a $664 billion backlog in cloud infrastructure, but carries heavy debt and burns cash. ServiceNow, hit by the 2026 software sell-off, trades at 7.5 times forward sales as it pushes into agentic AI. AppLovin trades at 13 times 2027 earnings estimates. Its revenue rose 53% last quarter to $1.9 billion.

CFOs at Chevron, ServiceNow and Nasdaq say AI must earn capital; ServiceNow targets $500M savings

Chevron, ServiceNow and Nasdaq finance chiefs say AI projects must prove their worth before getting funded. They spoke on a panel at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Santa Barbara on Tuesday. Chevron's chief financial officer, Eimear Bonner, said AI "has got to compete for capital" and cannot be "a science experiment." She wants a clear path to value and results that reach the bottom line. ServiceNow's Gina Mastantuno said CFOs must also weigh the cost of falling behind rivals. The company expects $500 million in savings this year, largely from using its own products. Nasdaq's Sarah Youngwood sorts investments by time horizon and tracks AI metrics such as coding speed, client retention and token costs.
