Apple has announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio desktop computers featuring significant processor upgrades, continuing its push into AI-enhanced computing. OpenAI has claimed its new Jalapeno chips outperform Nvidia's current chip lineup, marking a notable challenge to Nvidia's dominance in AI hardware. The development signals growing competition as AI companies seek alternatives to Nvidia's GPUs for training and deploying large language models.
Nvidia is set to report second quarter earnings after market close on Wednesday. Analysts expect adjusted earnings per share of $2.09 on revenue of $92 billion, representing a 96% year-over-year revenue increase and continued quarter-over-quarter acceleration. Apple unveiled new versions of its Mac Mini and Mac Studio on Tuesday, targeting AI developers. The compact desktops have become popular in the AI community, with certain models increasingly difficult to find in stores. The Mac Mini has gained traction due to its relatively low cost and ability to operate without a display, making it ideal for running AI agents. The Mac Studio has attracted engineers with its powerful chips.
Apple has announced refreshed Mac mini and Mac Studio models featuring two new chips: the M6, Apple's first 2nm M-series chip, and the M5 Ultra. The updates primarily target local AI inference and software development workflows. The M6 includes a 12-core CPU with Apple's first three-core-type design and a 12-core GPU, with up to 32GB memory capacity. The M5 Ultra offers up to 512GB memory and 1.2TB per second unified memory bandwidth, essentially combining two M6 Max chips. These specs address growing demand for running large language models locally. Since macOS 26.2 enabled distributed AI inference via Thunderbolt 5 last December, developers have been daisy-chaining Mac minis and Studios as alternatives to Nvidia GPU-based systems. The Mac mini with M6 starts at $899, whilst the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra begins at $5,499. Both devices are available for preorder today and ship on 22 September.

Apple claims the M6 delivers 20% faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and 40% faster than the M4. The chip includes 12 GPU cores and a dual 16-core Neural Engine for enhanced AI capabilities. The M6 Mac Mini starts at $899, representing a $200 price increase, with 16GB unified memory and bandwidth reaching 170GB per second. The Mac Studio introduces the M5 Ultra, Apple's first quad-die architecture chip. It features 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, with UltraFusion technology providing over 4.4TB per second inter-die bandwidth.
RapidSOS has enabled Apple Emergency SOS Live Video for emergency services across Brazil. The feature allows iPhone users to securely share live video with 190 dispatchers during emergencies through RapidSOS UNITE. The technology works by letting telecommunicators send video requests to callers' devices during emergency calls. Users can share their camera's live feed with a single tap, and the connection is encrypted by default. Callers can stop sharing at any time. RapidSOS first enabled the feature in the United States with iOS 18's release in September 2024. The company's network includes over 723 million connected devices and serves 23,500 federal, state and local agencies across 16 countries. The feature is available at no additional cost to Brazilian emergency communications centres using UNITE core modules.
