About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of process or industrial engineering experience in wood products manufacturing, such as sawmill, planer mill, OSB, LVL, plywood, MDF, or similar environments.
  • Working knowledge of primary and secondary wood breakdown processes, including log merchandising, sawing patterns, kerf and recovery optimization, surfacing, and grading.
  • Hands-on experience with mill layout design and material flow planning, including green end and dry end configurations, lumber handling systems, and sort and stacker integration, with proficiency in AutoCAD or comparable layout tools.
  • Familiarity with scanning and optimization systems and how optimizer settings translate to recovery and grade yield outcomes.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing automation in mill environments, including PLC-controlled sort lines, automated stackers, kiln tracking systems, and MES or production reporting platforms.
  • Proficiency in time study methods, OEE analysis, and capacity modeling applied to high-volume, continuous-flow wood processing.
  • Knowledge of kiln drying operations and how drying schedules, kiln capacity, and green inventory management interact with mill flow.
  • Understanding of lumber grading rules and how product mix and grade targets influence equipment sequencing and line design.
  • Ability to work effectively across mill operations, construction and installation teams, maintenance, forestry and procurement, and sales teams.
Responsibilities
  • Design and optimize material flow from log intake through primary breakdown, secondary processing, drying, surfacing, and finished goods staging, minimizing handling, rehandling, and queue buildup between operations.
  • Develop and maintain mill layouts for sawmills, planer mills, panel plants, or engineered wood facilities, incorporating equipment footprints, log, cant, and lumber flow paths, green chain and dry chain configurations, and trim and sort systems.
  • Determine primary and secondary breakdown equipment requirements, including headrigs, frame saws, and gang saws, and define optimal sequencing to maximize recovery and throughput.
  • Evaluate and specify automation and optimization systems such as scanning and optimization technology, PLC-controlled sort systems, and automated stacking and strapping lines.
  • Perform line balancing and bottleneck analysis across the mill, from the log deck and debarker through the green chain, kiln scheduling, dry mill, and shipping, ensuring equipment utilization is matched to production targets.
  • Conduct time studies and production flow analyses to establish standard work, crew sizing, and shift capacity targets across mill departments.
  • Partner with maintenance, production, and dry kiln teams to plan and execute equipment installations, mill reconfigurations, and capacity expansion projects with minimal downtime.
  • Apply lean principles to wood products manufacturing, identifying waste in lumber handling, sort and stacking operations, trim optimization, and grade flow.
  • Support capital project development for mill modernization initiatives, including scanning upgrades, automated grading systems, and materials handling improvements, contributing to vendor evaluation, installation, and commissioning.
  • Own and maintain mill flow diagrams, equipment layout drawings, and standard operating procedures, authoring and updating documentation as equipment, products, or processes change.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and support team and operational needs as they evolve.

About the company

T

The Lumber Manufactory

View

The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) builds and operates a platform that connects timberland owners with opportunities to sell or harvest timber while developing modular, flexible sawmilling technology to enable sustainable, faster production of dimensional wood. Its core product is a modular sawmill system designed to reduce waste and shorten manufacturing time, paired with a nationwide network that links landowners to industry professionals to facilitate timber transactions and obtain favorable pricing for timber rights. The company differentiates itself by combining processing technology with a marketplace-like platform that empowers private landowners and democratizes access to wood processing across the United States, rather than relying on traditional, localized sawmills. The goal is to increase forest productivity, promote sustainable forestry, and expand economic opportunities for landowners by making timber harvesting and processing more efficient and accessible.

What believers are saying

  • August 2026 New Albany startup added 50-plus jobs and $15 million investment.
  • Mississippi MDA backs TLM with MFLEX, AccelerateMS, and Union County support.
  • Company careers page showed 15 openings on September 14, 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New mills routinely miss yield and uptime targets; TLM's first plant started in 2026.
  • Timber processing is cyclical; Mississippi pine price swings can compress margins fast.
  • If New Albany underperforms, TLM burns cash and loses lender, landowner, and investor trust.

What makes The Lumber Manufactory unique

  • TLM combines timber marketplace software with a newly operational Mississippi sawmill.
  • Its New Albany mill targets Southern Yellow Pine and private-landowner timber access.
  • TLM hired across engineering, operations, and G&A while building manufacturing capability.

The Lumber Manufactory opens $15M sawmill in Mississippi, creating 50+ jobs

The Lumber Manufactory has opened a sawmill in New Albany, Mississippi, representing an investment of more than $15 million and creating over 50 jobs. The facility will process Mississippi's abundant pine sawtimber and provide new opportunities for private landowners to sell their timber. The Mississippi Development Authority is supporting the project through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive programme, alongside AccelerateMS and Union County. The sawmill is now operational. TLM was founded in 2023 by executives who previously worked at Anduril, Blue Origin and Nvidia. Co-founder and CEO Michael Grasso said America has a timber surplus and lumber manufacturing deficit, calling the new state-of-the-art mill a "tremendous opportunity to build more sawn wood products at home".
