About the job

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computational Ecology, Systems Biology, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages, with experience in frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
  • A strong foundation in modeling techniques, including differential equations, agent-based modeling, network models, and Bayesian approaches, for simulating ecological processes or population dynamics.
  • Experience handling large, often messy ecological datasets, such as climate data, remote sensing imagery, and biodiversity records.
  • Python skills including NumPy, SciPy, and pandas; reproducible research workflows; and Git-based version control.
  • High-performance model implementation skills, including vectorization and profiling or optimization; familiarity with PyTorch or JAX.
  • Ecological modeling methods including agent-based, ordinary and partial differential equation, network, and Bayesian or statistical modeling; uncertainty quantification.
  • Geospatial analytics using GIS, GeoPandas, rasterio, and GDAL, and spatial databases such as PostGIS for integrating environmental and biodiversity data.
  • Remote sensing and gridded data handling, including xarray, land cover or land use change, and climate rasters; comfort with messy real-world datasets.
  • Clear technical documentation covering assumptions, data provenance, and APIs, and maintainable code using testing and modular design.
  • Ability to translate ecological theory into tractable computational abstractions; exercise research judgment in literature synthesis, hypothesis framing, and disciplined model validation; prioritize computational efficiency, robustness, and reproducibility; and work with uncertainty, noisy data, and incomplete ground truth.
  • Clear communication in interdisciplinary teams spanning design, biology, and engineering; proactive stakeholder management; and ability to independently drive milestones while aligning work to EDEN workflow integration needs.
Responsibilities
  • Research and identify key ecosystem behaviors and interactions to create a comprehensive conceptual framework for general ecosystem modeling.
  • Lead the modeling of core ecosystem dynamics and interactions defined in the conceptualization phase, such as plant growth and succession.
  • Develop quantitative metrics to assess ecosystem health, stability, and service provision.
  • Implement models in a computationally efficient framework and document them thoroughly to ensure usability and reproducibility.
  • Help gather and integrate relevant environmental, ecological, and spatial data to underpin model parameters and validate model outcomes.
  • Conduct data analysis to derive insights needed to develop ecosystem models and validate model parameters.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation outlining model assumptions, data sources, code structure, and operation for using and maintaining the models.
  • Communicate continually with the OXMAN team to review research and implementation and integrate the model into their workflows.
  • Participate in weekly or biweekly progress meetings to review milestones, discuss challenges, and plan next steps.
  • Provide status updates summarizing progress, challenges encountered, and adjustments to the project plan.
  • Develop, deploy, and validate a general ecosystem model within two quarters of the start date.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of spatial databases, parallel computing, or cloud-based data storage.

About the company

OXMAN designs and builds products, architecture, and molecular systems by blending computational design, materials science, robotics, biology, and ecological engineering. It follows Material Ecology, treating man-made objects as part of the environment and prioritizing growth and decay over traditional assembly and disposal. The firm works on product design, architectural design, and molecular design, collaborating with partners to apply nature-inspired principles, from biodegradable products like the O-zero shoe to carbon-sequestering buildings. Its cross-disciplinary, bio-informed workflow aims at ecological restoration and circular economy, funded by founder Neri Oxman and partners, with the goal of reducing waste, capturing carbon, and healing ecosystems.

What believers are saying

  • In July 2026, OXMAN advanced bacterial textile coloration, expanding beyond footwear.
  • In August 2026, Ackman and Oxman committed $400 million to AOI, reinforcing founder wealth.
  • Goodman partnership gives OXMAN a large construction channel for ecological building methods.

What critics are saying

  • OXMAN still lacks visible mass-market revenue by September 2026.
  • Bill Ackman funds the company; any capital or reputation shock hits runway immediately.
  • The 2024 plagiarism fight keeps Neri Oxman exposed to recurring media and legal damage.

What makes OXMAN unique

  • OXMAN combines robotics, wet labs, and computational design in one New York campus.
  • Its Material Ecology thesis turns biodegradation into product architecture, not afterthought.
  • The O° platform uses single-material, zero-microplastic manufacturing across shoes and textiles.
