Requirements
  • A Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, Laser Engineering, Photonics, or a related field.
  • Experimental expertise across ultrafast-laser sources, including diode-pumped solid-state, short-pulse, and fiber lasers and amplifiers, and their diagnostics.
  • Practical experience with optical alignment, laser operation, and laboratory troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with optical frequency combs and their stabilization.
  • Hands-on experience with high-finesse optical cavities, including alignment, locking, mode-matching, and finesse/loss optimization.
  • Practical experience with locking electronics and feedback/servo loops.
  • Programming and data-analysis skills, such as Python, for measurement automation and analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach to technical challenges.
  • A hands-on, self-driven, and collaborative working style with attention to detail in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Responsibilities
  • Build, operate, and stabilize the frequency-comb front end by setting up, running, locking, and maintaining the comb source in the laboratory.
  • Build, stabilize, and characterize cavities by assembling, aligning, locking, and optimizing the reference and enhancement cavities.
  • Carry out hands-on laboratory work for the subsystem, including alignment, troubleshooting, measurement, and optimization, while working independently.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to integrate the subsystem with amplification, synthesis, and other advanced technologies into the overall system design.
  • Use common laser diagnostic and nonlinear techniques to measure and analyze ultrafast pulses.
  • Document experimental procedures, results, and design recommendations in a structured and traceable manner.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the laser system, diagnostics, and workflows.
  • Contribute to laser-operation procedures and safety protocols and ensure compliance with safety standards.

Marvel Fusion develops laser-driven fusion energy using non-thermal direct-drive inertial confinement with nanostructured fuel targets. It aims to trigger fusion reactions with low-neutronic fuels like hydrogen-boron, reducing long-lived radioactive waste. The company builds a new high-powered laser facility in collaboration with Colorado State University, housing multiple multi-petawatt lasers to conduct experiments and advance fusion research. Its approach differs from many competitors by applying direct-drive laser for fusion with nanostructured fuels and a focus on hydrogen-boron to minimize waste, supported by a strong academic and private funding network. The goal is to enable a safe, clean, and reliable fusion power plant that helps the world move toward sustainable energy.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Siemens Energy and EIC joined March 2025, validating Europe-led financing momentum.
  • CSU says ATLAS reaches substantial completion in December 2026, advancing toward experiments.
  • Marvel Fusion now claims €385 million total funding, giving it Europe's strongest fusion war chest.

What critics are saying

  • ATLAS slipped from 2026 to early 2027, delaying proof before investors.
  • Commercial rollout still targets 2036, leaving a decade-plus capital burn ahead.
  • NIF and private rivals advance alternative fusion paths, compressing Marvel Fusion's relevance window.

What makes Marvel Fusion unique

  • Marvel Fusion pairs proprietary fast-ignitor lasers with nanostructured targets, unlike tokamak rivals.
  • Siemens Energy joined in 2025, adding industrial power-plant design credibility.
  • ATLAS at CSU creates a rare U.S. testbed for high-repetition fusion validation.
