CNN and CBS News are now under one roof as the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger closes. News Media. Paramount Skydance has completed its $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, forming Skydance. The deal, which closed Tuesday, brings together two entertainment giants that own film studios and theme parks, and also brings two of the most influential US news brands, CNN and CBS News, under one roof. Skydance CEO David Ellison, son of tech magnate Larry Ellison and a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has appointed Ianon Craze as co-CEO. Craze previously headed Mattel. The road to the merger included lawsuits from labor unions and 12 different state attorneys general. However, the deal was finally settled after the company agreed to appoint an independent editorial board to oversee both news networks amid concerns that the merger would lead to distorted coverage on the two networks. The company announced Monday that Mark Thompson will remain CNN's editor-in-chief, and Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief of CBS News who was appointed to the position a year ago Monday, will retain her position. Thompson's continuation brought a "sigh of relief" to CNN journalists, according to their newsletter, Reliable Sources. Since the merger was announced, there has been a wave of concerns at the network that CNN would undergo major changes if Ellison took over. The impending future. There are still many unknowns about what news will look like under Skydance. In a memo to staff on Monday, Thompson stated that "the details of how CNN will connect and operate within the new company are not yet finalized." That means concerns about layoffs and consolidation still weigh on both news divisions, as the combined company will have $80 billion in debt, while the entertainment giants aim to cut costs, expand their streaming segment and have pledged to produce 30 films a year. Thompson's stay may be temporary, as The New York Times reported that his contract expires in the spring. It's also unclear whether the channels will remain separate or merge in the long term, amid concerns that Weiss, who left CBS News, could gain additional leadership at CNN. Previously, top network staffers, including journalist Anderson Cooper, threatened to quit if she joined. Weiss took over the network a year ago, and viewership declined across the board. Most recently, the news program "60 Minutes" saw a decline in viewership during its season premiere last month, down 21 percent year-over-year and marking the worst season premiere in 25 years, according to Nielsen ratings. Editorial questions. The terms of the attorneys general's settlement require independent editorial oversight for both networks. Skydance has 180 days to put it in place. Press freedom experts don't believe this will help preserve editorial independence. "It doesn't go into effect for 180 days. The editorial can be completely updated within 180 days," Seth Stern, director of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, told Al Jazeera. This isn't the first time the publication has appointed an editorial board to address concerns about editorial influence. In 2007, when News Corp acquired Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, the Bancroft family, which owned the publisher at the time, feared that the new owner and media mogul Rupert Murdoch could undermine the newspaper's editorial independence with his conservative leanings. The newspaper appointed an independent five-person committee to maintain editorial integrity. However, it was later revealed, including by former board members during a roundtable discussion organized by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, that it had failed to provide the oversight it was originally intended to provide. In Skydance's case, the board of directors must consist of five journalists appointed by Ellison, and the company is not required to disclose its findings to the public. The terms stipulate that no more than two members of the board may be affiliated with a single political party. "Truth isn't defined by a fifty-yard line between political parties. Sometimes neither party even comes close to the truth. Therefore, a commitment to bipartisan representation rather than a commitment to truth-telling completely misunderstands what news is," Stern said. The new company began trading on Wall Street under the ticker symbol SKYD. Shares have fallen 2.5 pence since opening on Tuesday. ad unit: 1 / 4
First Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark to open in Bellevue, Nebraska. October 6, 2026 Mattel, Inc., the global play and family entertainment company and owner of iconic brands, announces a milestone in the expansion of its worldwide experiences business, confirming Bellevue, Nebraska, is now the first Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark planned to open at the end of 2027. Designed as a year-round, multi-brand destination, the approximately 100,000-square-foot waterpark will bring Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, UNO and more Mattel brands together through attractions, play, food and shared experiences. American Resort Management, an experience manager of high-volume resort and entertainment operations including Epic Waters and Wild Rivers, will oversee sustainable day-to-day performance and guest-flow optimization. Natalia Premovic, Chief Consumer Products and Experiences Officer, Mattel, said: "Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterparks are about bringing great experiences to where our fans actually live. We see a real opportunity to take the kind of immersive entertainment traditionally concentrated in major markets and bring it to more communities in a scalable, year-round format. Bellevue becoming our first Waterpark to open is an important step in that strategy and a significant chance to show what happens when you bring so many of our brands together in one place." The new renderings from the Bellevue location offer an early look at how Mattel's brands will be translated into immersive attractions and themed environments. The Waterparks will share a common vision while offering unique experiences at each location. Including Bellevue, Mattel has confirmed four of the five planned Waterpark locations across North America. Other confirmed locations are Orlando, Florida; Bradley, Illinois; and Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. The Waterpark will feature a vibrant environment where Mattel's brands are woven into the story. Featured experiences at Bellevue will include a Barbie activity pool and FlowRider(R) surf simulator; a Hot Wheels "Challenge Accepted" multi-slide tower; a lazy river inspired by Mattel Games favorites including UNO, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots and Magic 8 Ball, a Fisher-Price water play structure; and themed food and beverage offerings. Designed for a wide range of ages and thrill levels, the destination offers something for every guest, blending immersive storytelling with signature attractions that invite visitors to step inside the worlds of Mattel. Featuring a signature retractable roof, the climate-controlled venue will offer year-round operation while bringing natural light and fresh air. Rusty Hike, Mayor of Bellevue, Nebraska, said: "Bellevue is proud to be home to the first Mattel Wonder Indoor Waterpark, bringing a one-of-a-kind location to our community and welcoming visitors from across the region. This project represents an important investment in Bellevue's future, and we're excited to work with Mattel and American Resort Management to create a place where people can experience all our community has to offer." Construction continues on the indoor destination, which is being developed within Bellevue's growing Good Life District, a mixed-use destination designed to increase tourism, through a collaboration between Mattel, the City of Bellevue and American Resort Management. "Seeing the building take shape is exciting, but the interior is where the vision will really come to life," said Rick Coleman, CEO of American Resort Management. "Our goal is to create an experience that feels unmistakably Mattel while delivering the quality, service and guest experience families expect from a world-class waterpark."

ADWEEK creativity Advantage: building fandoms needs a different playbook. As fan-first marketing spreads, brands are rethinking the skills they need, operating more like entertainment and media companies. 3 hours ago ADWEEK Advantage is part of a series where every month, its top editors interpret what happened in each vertical, and what it means for the future. On stage at ADWEEK's Brandweek event last month, Roberto Stanichi, president, chief marketing and brand officer at Mattel, said his team views the term 'consumer' as a "dirty word." "'Consumer' indicates that you have a transactional relationship with people that are buying something, versus fans who really want to join a brand, participate, co-create, and engage as ambassadors of your brand," Stanichi said. Stanichi's comments speak to a broader shift in how brands are built today. Brittaney is Adweek's creative editor based in London. Recommended videos
