Google launches server-side Swift support as Apple language gains backend traction

Google has released Cloud API Client Libraries for Swift, signalling confidence in the programming language's server-side potential. The libraries target Swift 6.2+ and leverage SwiftNIO's asynchronous capabilities, HTTP/2 multiplexing, and data race safety features. Google engineers Karl Weinmeister and Carlos O'Ryan praised Swift 6's strict concurrency checking, which they say provides "Rust-like data-race safety with predictable, reference-counted performance." They highlighted the language's lightweight runtime, Automatic Reference Counting, and compile-time concurrency checking as key advantages. Apple open-sourced Swift in 2015, but server-side adoption has been sluggish. IBM retreated from its Swift commitment in 2019, whilst Amazon's Smoke Framework has seen little recent development. Swift currently ranks 18th in the TIOBE index, down from ninth in January 2020. The Swift 6 release in 2024, featuring enhanced data race safety, has renewed interest in backend applications.

Apple stock upside limited to 17% over three years as growth slows

Apple stock returned 31% in the twelve months to September 2026, outpacing the S&P 500's 15.4%. However, a scenario analysis suggests modest future gains of about 17.1% over the next three years, or 5.4% annually. The projection assumes 12.1% annual revenue growth, offset by a slightly lower net margin and lower price-to-earnings ratio. Revenue growth from iPhone and Mac sales would drive gains, with the iPhone accounting for half of fiscal 2025 revenue. Apple released the iPhone 18 Pro in September and announced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, launching 23 October. The company faced supply constraints in its June quarter after stronger-than-expected demand. If revenue growth falls to Apple's three-year average of 6.7% annually, the stock would return nearly nothing over three years, making it a riskier investment at current valuations.

Apple TV unveils trailer for "Small Prophets," the captivating comedy created, written and directed by BAFTA Award winner Mackenzie Crook.

Apple TV unveils trailer for "Small Prophets," the captivating comedy created, written and directed by BAFTA Award winner Mackenzie Crook. Premiering globally on Wednesday, October 7, the series stars Mackenzie Crook, Pearce Quigley, Lauren Patel, Sir Michael Palin, Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing and Paul Kaye. WEBWIRE - Thursday, October 1, 2026 Today, Apple TV debuted the season one trailer for "Small Prophets," the acclaimed six-episode comedy from BAFTA Award-winning creator, writer and director Mackenzie Crook ("Detectorists"). The series will premiere on Apple TV with the first two episodes on October 7, 2026, excluding the U.K., where it will be available to Apple TV subscribers in 2027. New episodes will premiere every Wednesday through November 4, 2026. The series features a host of beloved comedy stars, including Mackenzie Crook, Pearce Quigley ("Detectorists"), Lauren Patel ("Waterloo Road"), BAFTA Award winner Sir Michael Palin ("Monty Python"), BAFTA Award winner Sophie Willan ("Alma's Not Normal"), BAFTA Award nominee Jon Pointing ("Big Boys") and Actor Award nominee Paul Kaye ("Game of Thrones"). "Small Prophets" is a comic tale of the eccentric Michael Sleep (Quigley) who, since his darling Clea disappeared seven years ago, has lived a very ordinary life. He works in a DIY store, visits his dad Brian (Palin) and hopes for Clea to return. One day Brian shares an old recipe involving rainwater, horse manure and more than a little alchemy. With recipe in hand, Michael sets out (albeit with some skepticism) to create homunculi - magical spirits that can predict the future - in the hope they have the answer to his burning question: "will I ever see Clea again?" Michael gets help from his young coworker Kacey (Patel), an unlikely friendship that blossoms partly (but not wholly) through their mutual dislike of store manager Gordon (Mackenzie Crook). Their friendship adds to the frustration and intrigue of his nosy neighbors (Willan, Pointing) who are obsessed with trying to find out what the hell is going on in the garden shed. Hailed as a "jewel-like, unhurried masterpiece that is funny, profound and manages to break and mend your heart in equal measures," the "truly fantastic" first season of the series that is "full of gorgeous surprises" holds a rare, perfect 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and won the Best Series Award, International Panorama at Series Mania in March 2026. Celebrated as "completely lovely" and "compulsory viewing," "Small Prophets" is "richly steeped in Crook's glorious brand of gentleness, his ability to imbue the ordinary with extraordinariness," and is an "impossible marvel of TV making." "Small Prophets" was filmed and set in and around Manchester. The series incorporates visually stunning animation elements throughout a story of friendships and hope, the magical and the mundane, and where secrets and lies lurk in a suburban cul-de-sac. The series is produced by Treasure Trove and Blue House Productions, and is created, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook. Executive producers are Mackenzie Crook and Lisa Thomas for Treasure Trove Productions, and Christine Gernon and Emma Strain for Blue House Productions. Apple TV acquired "Small Prophets" from international distributor Sphere Abacus. Apple TV offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all of a user's favorite screens. Qualcomm's Apple patent renewal secures $1.28B licensing revenue despite modem shift

Qualcomm has renewed its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective from 1 April 2027. Despite Apple developing its own modems and reducing chip purchases from Qualcomm, the iPhone maker will continue paying royalties to use Qualcomm's wireless technology patents. Qualcomm's licensing unit generated $1.28 billion last quarter at a 69% margin. The company's automotive revenue reached $1.59 billion, up 61%, marking its 23rd consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. Management expects non-handset growth to accelerate from 24% in fiscal 2026 to over 60% in fiscal 2027. Qualcomm shares trade at 15.34 times free cash flow, compared to Broadcom's approximate 43 times multiple. The company generated $12.82 billion in free cash flow in fiscal 2025 and returned $12.60 billion to shareholders. However, handset revenue fell 20% to $5.09 billion, with Android revenue expected to decline 20% this year.

Apple CEO Ternus eyes faster product releases and management cuts

Apple CEO John Ternus is exploring a faster, more flexible product strategy, potentially moving away from the company's traditional spring and autumn release schedule, Bloomberg reported. The chief executive, who succeeded Tim Cook earlier this month, is also considering reducing management layers to enable direct interaction between engineers and senior leaders. Changes are already underway in Apple's hardware organisation, with several engineering program manager positions recently eliminated. Around six directors have been affected, and they may seek internal transfers before leaving. Apple has also reduced staffing for Vision Pro, Siri, and Fitness+ roles. A proposal to cut approximately 5,000 AppleCare customer-service jobs was paused during the summer, according to the report. The moves suggest Ternus is reassessing product timing, engineering coordination, and organisational structure early in his leadership.
