Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • The ability to pass a background check is required.
  • An Alaska driver's license is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate with participants, parents, and administrators.
  • Follow safety procedures and adhere to NSBSD and activity-specific policies and guidelines.
  • Review the Parent and Student Handbooks annually.
  • Prioritize student welfare in decision-making.
  • Complete the required coaching and activity adviser mandatory training checklist on or before the first contract day.
  • Work with the Principal, Director of Iñupiaq Education, and JOM grant manager to determine participating students and selection criteria.
  • Inform students that they must write an essay after administering the AFN/Elders Youth pre-attendance survey.
  • Review the agenda before travel and prepare students for sessions, which may include readings, discussions, and interviews with local elders.
  • Chaperone students during travel and the convention.
  • Administer the post-attendance survey to students.
  • Submit travel paperwork at least 15 days before travel and upon returning from the trip.
  • Follow Native Village JOM grant manager travel procedures for Elders Youth/AFN when based in Barrow or Point Hope.
  • Submit an activity report and attach photos when available.
