Requirements

  • Knowledge, comprehension, and practical assistance with fluid, whole blood, salvaged blood, and blood component management during patient care.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals and their practical use by the anesthesia provider during patient care.
  • Resourcefulness in troubleshooting anesthesia equipment and ensuring the necessary equipment is selected, properly functioning, and set up for anesthesia procedures.
  • Ability to think critically during stressful and emergent situations.
  • Ability to prioritize and demonstrate flexibility regarding scheduling and assignments.
  • Ability to establish a good working relationship and communicate consistently and effectively with other members of the anesthesia team and various operating room teams.
  • Ability to secure intravenous access.
  • Graduation from an accredited Anesthesia Technician/Technologist program or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Recertification must be maintained according to the standards set forth by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians.
  • Continuing educational requirements are governed by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians based on recertification of Certified Anesthesia Technician or Technologist status.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and perform technical and supportive tasks to assist attending anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists with anesthetic procedures for patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics.
  • Consult the operating room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for scheduled procedures.
  • Stock and restock anesthesia supplies in all anesthetizing locations, including regular anesthesia supply carts, fiberoptic carts, emergency carts, Ambu-bags, and other necessary anesthesia supplies.
  • Perform daily function checks on anesthesia machines and perform a leak test whenever a circuit has been replaced.
  • Prepare anesthetizing locations for procedures by setting up and calibrating monitoring devices and anesthesia machines, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair when needed.
  • Obtain supplies and equipment requested by anesthesia providers.
  • Reorder supplies and equipment as necessary.
  • Clean and sanitize anesthesia machines, monitors, and equipment according to Infection Control procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures, including peripheral or central intravenous and arterial line placement and intravascular monitoring.
  • Assist with airway management techniques, including mask, endotracheal, and emergency methods.
  • Assist anesthesia providers with regional anesthesia techniques in operating rooms and surgical admission units.
  • Coordinate plans with anesthesia supply and equipment personnel to ensure supplies and equipment are available for anesthetic procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is recommended.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is recommended.
