Portugal and Japan form space partnership to tackle wildfires and extreme weather

Portugal has partnered with Japan to strengthen capabilities in extreme weather response and disaster management through its Atlantic Constellation space initiative. The cooperation was announced at SPACETIDE 2026 in Tokyo through a memorandum of understanding between New Space Alliances and SPACETIDE, Japan's space industry hub. The partnership establishes Japan as the fourth Space Hub in the Atlantic Constellation network, following Guimarães and Oeiras in Portugal and Amazónia in Brazil. Led by CEiiA and the Portuguese Air Force, the initiative will develop space-based solutions for monitoring and managing climate events including wildfires and storms. The Space Hubs create regional ecosystems combining science, technology and business to address climate and sustainability challenges whilst fostering business development between Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Lufthansa integrates car developed by CEiiA into ground handling operations.

Lufthansa integrates car developed by CEiiA into ground handling operations. Fleet of BEN vehicles, developed in Portugal by CEiiA, will be tested in September at Porto and Lisbon airports. This is the first time a group of the size of Lufthansa has adopted the vehicle. 26 Jun 2026, 22:11 Most read. Lufthansa Ground Services Portugal (LGSP) and CEiiA: Centro de Engenharia e Desenvolvimento de Produto have closed an agreement to integrate the BEN, an electric car developed from scratch by the entity, into its ground handling operations. "The partnership agreement between the two entities places a fleet of BEN electric vehicles at the service of ramp support for aircraft and personalized ground handling services at airports, tested in September and entering operation in 2027," they said in the same note. In summer, the news doesn't pause. Subscribe for €39.90/year and be eligible to win a stay at a Small Portuguese Hotels hotel. Subscribe The BEN was developed in Portugal by CEiiA, being "the first time that an airline group of the size of Lufthansa" adopts the vehicle, "a choice that projects Portuguese engineering at the center of European airport mobility." The partnership between LGSP and CEiiA advances "a decarbonization agenda that goes beyond fleet renewal," they highlighted, noting that "ground handling operations involve constant movements between aircraft, terminals and operational areas," and that "an electric, compact and modular vehicle like the BEN allows a significant reduction in energy consumption, operating costs and the environmental footprint of the activity." In addition, "the collaboration also includes the use of CEiiA's AYR technology," which will serve to promote "carbon neutrality in the company's operations," and can be replicated at other airports and infrastructures. "The partnership with Lufthansa Ground Services Portugal is an excellent opportunity for our BEN to show its potential to contribute to more sustainable mobility at airports and other infrastructures in Portugal and across Europe," says Helena Silva, CTO (chief technology officer) of CEiiA. The agreement also links "the emissions avoided by using BEN to Help Alliance Portugal," meaning "the value of the carbon credits generated can be returned to local communities, financing projects with social impact." Help Alliance is the non-profit organization of the Lufthansa Group, with more than 25 years of activity and 87 social projects on several continents, which will inaugurate its first association outside Germany in Portugal. "Choosing the BEN was a strategic decision and, at the same time, a statement of confidence in the best that is done in Portugal. We want to decarbonize our ground operations without sacrificing efficiency, and the BEN responds exactly to that challenge," said Paulo Geisler, CEO of Lufthansa Ground Services Portugal, quoted in the same note. The agreement between LGSP and CEiiA is signed on Monday in Porto, and the fleet enters operation at Porto and Lisbon airports in September, in tests. Your opinion is important. Portugal strengthens strategic and technological advancement with launch of six satellites into space.

Portugal strengthens strategic and technological advancement with launch of six satellites into space. Goal is to expand Earth observation capabilities, with applications ranging from disaster response to precision agriculture and carbon mapping. 30 March 2026, 01:55 Portugal is preparing to launch six new satellites this Monday, March 30, from Vandenberg Base in California, as part of the Transporter-16 mission, a step that promises to strengthen both national technological capacity and the economic potential of Portugal's space ecosystem. The launch is scheduled between 11:20 and 12:17 (Portuguese time), with possible postponement of 24 to 48 hours due to weather or operational reasons. The efforts involve public and private actors, such as the Portuguese Air Force (FAP), CEiiA, and N3O, together with international partners and the national operator Geosat. The new assets join the Atlantic Constellation, currently consisting of three satellites in orbit, and aim to expand Earth observation capabilities, with applications ranging from disaster response to precision agriculture and carbon mapping. Among the six satellites, a Portuguese Air Force system with radar capability for continuous observation stands out, independent of weather conditions and day/night cycles, reinforcing persistent surveillance and situational awareness - crucial factors for national security and protection of the Exclusive Economic Zone. On the other hand, the VHRLight NexGen satellite, led by CEiiA and N3O, is the second of an optical pair capable of producing multispectral images with 70 cm per pixel resolution, suitable for detailed territory analysis. On the same day of the launch, an agreement will be formalized between Satellogic, N3O, and Geosat for cooperation in satellite technologies, subsystems, and downstream services, with direct implications for the Atlantic Data Hub - a platform intended to valorize spatial data and stimulate the offer of value-added services to national and international markets. Constellation operation will be ensured by Geosat and, when complete (12 units including optical and radar), a revisit frequency of approximately three hours over areas of interest is anticipated, improving information availability for public and private decision-makers. The data produced should catalyze commercial solutions in sectors such as insurance, agriculture, environment, defense, and maritime logistics, enhancing value chains and service export opportunities. Simultaneously, CEiiA and N3O are developing, in partnership with German company OHB, two more VHR optical satellites, while LusoSpace will integrate four satellites from its Lusíada Constellation, focused on maritime monitoring and communications - projects funded under the New Space Agenda. The Agenda also includes the strategic component of Space Access, coordinated by FAP, which foresees the development of a space base in the Azores, aiming to position Portugal as an Atlantic hub for launches and asset recovery, reinforcing European autonomy and attracting investment. The moment marks a significant advance in the internationalization of Portugal's space sector and in creating capabilities with economic and strategic impact.

Micro, AMFI and CEiiA partner on Turin microcar venture.

Micro, AMFI and CEiiA partner on Turin microcar venture. Micro, AMFI and CEiiA have signed an MoU to develop and manufacture micro electric vehicles, with BEN production planned for Turin * March 24, 2026 Micro, Automotive Micro Factory Italy (AMFI) and Portuguese engineering firm CEiiA have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on micro electric vehicle development and manufacturing, with AMFI's Turin facility set to serve as the production base for CEiiA's BEN microcar. The agreement also covers shared supply chain development, powertrain and digital technologies, and joint engineering across the two companies' respective micro electric vehicle platforms. Micro's Microlino is a battery-electric microcar targeting the consumer market, while CEiiA's BEN is a modular micro electric car designed for business applications, incorporating a digital platform for fleet management and CO[2] tracking. AMFI, part of the same Swiss holding group as Micro, will work with CEiiA to define production processes and quality standards for serial manufacturing of BEN in Turin. "By joining forces with CEiiA and bringing BEN into the AMFI production ecosystem in Turin, we are creating a powerful European platform that spans both private and business mobility," said Oliver Ouboter, Chief Operating Officer of Micro. Helena Silva, Chief Technology Officer of CEiiA, added: "This partnership with Micro and AMFI marks a new phase in the development of the BEN project, reinforcing the creation of a collaborative industrial model in Europe. The establishment of the first production site in Turin will enable the development of complementary capabilities with Microlino."
