About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent directly related work experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant industry experience designing electronics and/or embedded systems.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals, including analog and digital design, signal integrity, and power integrity.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, bring-up, debugging, and validation of electronic systems.
  • Proficiency in a laboratory environment using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, frequency counters, and related instrumentation.
Responsibilities
  • Own system hardware deliverables across the full product lifecycle, from early architecture and printed circuit board/flexible circuit design through prototype bring-up, validation, and production ramp.
  • Drive system-level electrical architecture decisions and contribute to product definition in partnership with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Own schematic design, layout direction, and design reviews for rigid printed circuit boards and flexible circuits, delivering to program milestones.
  • Perform prototype bring-up, debugging, and system validation; build validation plans that prove performance in the laboratory and ensure quality at the factory.
  • Define and drive manufacturing test requirements; partner with contract manufacturers and operations to enable a smooth ramp to high-volume production.
  • Lead complex, multidisciplinary investigations across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, driving them to root cause and durable resolution.
  • Translate complex technical trade-offs into clear narratives for cross-functional partners, contract manufacturers, and executive audiences; build alignment and drive decisions.
  • Mentor peers, share best practices, and help raise the technical bar and culture of the team.
  • Travel occasionally to support builds and manufacturing activities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency in printed circuit board and flexible circuit design, including schematic and layout, with a track record of delivering high-quality designs to aggressive timelines.
  • Working knowledge across several system domains, such as system-on-chip integration, power and battery, inductive power, analog and audio, radio frequency, sensors, electrostatic discharge, or scalable design-test and automation infrastructure.
  • A track record of driving ambiguous, cross-disciplinary problems to root cause and making measured decisions with incomplete data.
  • The ability to build alignment across teams and influence decisions with cross-functional partners, contract manufacturers, and executive stakeholders.
  • Experience taking hardware from proof of concept toward mass production; exposure to contract manufacturing partners is a plus.
  • Design validation experience spanning bench characterization through factory test coverage.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and fostering a team environment where ideas from any level are welcomed, challenged, and improved.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex electrical trade-offs to non-electrical-engineering audiences.

Apple will open pre-orders for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, on October 16 at 8:00 EDT. The book-style device starts at $1,999 and launches officially on October 23. Chip selloff spreads from Asia to US as Apple launches smart home push and Meta unveils new AI model

A chip selloff is accelerating as pressure spreads from Asia to the US, according to Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow. Apple has released a new line of smart home devices, led by its HomeView Hub. The hub is the centrepiece of Apple's push to challenge Amazon and Google in that space. Meta has also released a new AI model, which it says has "frontier capabilities." The company is vying to take on OpenAI and Anthropic.

Apple launches smart home range with $349.95 lock, $249.95 video doorbell and thermostat

Apple has unveiled the Apple Home Collection, a smart home range that includes a smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and security cameras. The products go on sale in December. The devices work with HomeView, Apple's new smart home hub. Apple built them with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, a shift for a company that has long made its own smart home accessories. The $349.95 lock supports ultra-wideband, which detects proximity more precisely than Bluetooth and could unlock the door as an authorised user approaches. The wired video doorbell costs $249.95 and sends alerts to Apple devices. A floodlight camera, priced at $399.95, combines exterior lighting with video monitoring. The range could help Apple compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest.

Apple unveils $299 HomeView, its first smart display, with Apple Watch-style faces

Apple has announced the HomeView, its first smart display, at an event in New York City on Tuesday. The 7-inch device costs $299 and goes on sale November 13, with preorders open now. It comes in two versions, a speaker base and a wall-mounted display, both at the same price. The launch is part of Apple's effort to revive its lagging smart home ecosystem. The square screen resembles a large Apple Watch, with swipeable, customisable "faces" that show a clock, photos, weather, or Snoopy animations. Swiping up opens a home screen with apps and widgets, running on new HomeView software rather than iOS. There is no App Store, only a curated app selection, including FaceTime, Messages, Safari, and Spotify. Setup requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Apple bets on the smart home to defend its iPhone moat against AI devices

Apple will hold a "Welcome Home" event at 9:00 ET, where it is expected to unveil smart-home devices. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company will detail HomeView, a hub for controlling Apple devices in the home. The push targets a market where Apple has trailed Amazon and Google. It also responds to new AI hardware from rivals, including Meta's Charm device and VR glasses, and OpenAI's plans for a device with iPhone designer Jony Ive. Such products could end tech companies' reliance on the iPhone for distribution. Apple's stock is up more than 25% this year, ahead of Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Over the past month, Meta is up more than 11%, while Apple is up just over 2%.
