About the company

Robotics and AI Institute

View

The Boston Dynamics AI Institute is a research-first organization that advances the fundamental science of artificial intelligence and robotics, funded by Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics and based in Cambridge. Its work produces new algorithms, models, and hardware concepts, using methods like reinforcement learning and sim-to-real to teach humanoid robots such as Atlas to perform dynamic, whole-body movements, verified first in simulation and then on real hardware. It differs from many rivals by combining university-style openness with corporate-scale resources and pursuing long-term scientific goals rather than immediate products, guided by leaders and partnerships in academia and industry. Its goal is to push the science of intelligent, agile, and safe robots to help people, improve industrial productivity, and assist those with disabilities by bridging simulation and real-world performance.

What believers are saying

  • June 26, 2026 hiring shows active demand for applied scientists in Cambridge.
  • Boston Dynamics and RAI kept pushing Atlas learning in 2026, validating the research engine.
  • SoftBank’s September 2026 deal signals strategic buyer demand for physical-AI research assets.

What critics are saying

  • SoftBank’s September 18, 2026 acquisition sits under CFIUS review, delaying control changes.
  • RAI still lacks product revenue, so Hyundai and acquirer funding determine runway.
  • If SoftBank blocks data-sharing or Raibert departs, RAI loses its core Atlas advantage.

What makes Robotics and AI Institute unique

  • Marc Raibert’s 2022 lab keeps Boston Dynamics-grade robotics talent in Cambridge.
  • Its 2026 work spans cognitive AI, athletic AI, organic hardware, and ethics.
  • RAI’s Atlas reinforcement-learning stack targets zero-shot loco-manipulation, not narrow demo behaviors.
