Requirements
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree in Non-Destructive Testing is required.
  • Familiarity with large emergency vehicles or commercial vehicles with hydraulic equipment is preferred.
  • Previous certification to CP 189 or SNT-TC-1A, including visual testing, magnetic particle testing, or ultrasonic testing, is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and technical ability are required.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interface with clients are required.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated areas is required.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 70 pounds, both assisted and unassisted, is required.
  • Ability to meet the vision requirements outlined in CP 189 is required.
  • Good computer skills in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, IBM laptop computers, and Lotus Notes are required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform NFPA certification testing on fire equipment apparatus, aerial devices, pumpers, aerial component weldments, and ground ladders.
  • Perform field evaluations of fire apparatus using non-destructive testing methods, including magnetic particle, visual, ultrasonic, and liquid penetrant testing.
  • Perform safety and non-safety certification inspections and field evaluations in accordance with applicable performance standards and requirements.
  • Analyze and evaluate examination and test results against applicable requirements.
  • Use technical judgment to determine whether noncompliance variations compromise continued application of the UL Mark and determine whether alternatives are acceptable.
  • Audit customer quality management or quality assurance programs as needed.
  • Exercise independent discretion and judgment when making technical decisions.
  • Interpret and analyze examination and test results against UL requirements, verify the accuracy of manufacturers' measuring equipment, and review production and inspection records.
  • Review manufacturers' production, inspection, and shipping programs to ensure products are produced and marked in compliance with UL requirements.
  • Evaluate and facilitate corrective-action options when variations from UL requirements are identified.
  • Apply construction and test acceptance criteria in FUII and applicable Standards, FUIIs, and procedures for required Special Competency categories.
  • Communicate with manufacturers, customers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and other parties to conduct certification inspections.
  • Investigate misuse of the UL Mark.
  • Provide information on policies and procedures for UL services and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
  • Discuss procedures, test methods, test results, sample selection, and product, device, process, system, and material variations to resolve problems, implement changes, or help develop requirements.
  • Use inspection instruments such as micrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, and other UL-supplied equipment.
  • Observe manufacturers' use of equipment necessary to meet UL requirements.
  • Confirm proper calibration of manufacturers' measuring equipment and perform calibration of UL-supplied equipment when required.
  • Document examinations, variations, and test results on appropriate UL forms.
  • Maintain logs for inspection scheduling, time, and expenses.
  • Perform calculations in multiple engineering fields, including electrical, mechanical, chemical, and fire protection.
  • Resolve process, management-system, and engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of variations.
  • Apply Hazard-Based Safety Engineering principles during Variation Notice handling when necessary.
  • Integrate continuous-improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and physical and digital security practices.
  • Perform other directed duties.

UL Solutions opens automotive EMC laboratory in Japan's Toyota City

UL Solutions has opened a new automotive electromagnetic compatibility laboratory in Toyota City, Japan, beginning operations on 1 July. The 2,323-square-metre facility will provide EMC testing to help manufacturers protect vehicles from interference affecting critical systems like braking and steering. The Automotive Technology and Innovation Centre is among few EMC laboratories in Japan equipped for high-voltage, high-current, high-torque and high-speed rotational testing. Its chambers can handle up to 25,000 RPM and power supplies delivering up to 1,500 volts and 1,000 amps. Located in Japan's Tokai region, the facility strengthens UL Solutions' global EMC testing network and supports automakers in the world's third-largest vehicle market, which produced over 8 million vehicles in 2025.

UL Solutions prices $980M secondary offering at $49 per share

UL Solutions has priced an underwritten secondary public offering of 20 million shares of Class A common stock at $49 per share, raising $980 million. The shares are being sold entirely by selling stockholder UL Standards & Engagement, with underwriters holding a 30-day option to purchase an additional 3 million shares. The global applied safety science company will not offer any shares and will receive no proceeds from the sale. The offering is expected to close on 9 September 2024, subject to customary conditions. Latham & Watkins represented both UL Solutions and the selling stockholder, led by Chicago partners Cathy Birkeland and Christopher Lueking. The firm previously advised UL Solutions on its $1.08 billion IPO, one of 2024's largest initial public offerings.
