Why African fintech companies are moving deeper into the services businesses need to operate. 3 minutes read African fintech companies are expanding beyond payment acceptance as they seek to provide the financial and operational services businesses need to manage their daily activities. The move towards African fintech business services was a central discussion at Moonshot 2026, where executives from Mastercard, Remita and OPay argued that merchants need more than systems that process transactions. The executives said businesses also require cash-flow management, customer insights, fraud reduction, reliable support and staff training. Paystack chief executive Shola Akinlade similarly placed wider business infrastructure at the centre of the company's next growth phase, describing an ambition to address financial needs that extend beyond payment acceptance. The discussions reflect a broader commercial opportunity for providers that already have relationships with merchants. A company processing payments can build on those transactions to offer financing, business tools and other services, giving merchants more reasons to remain within its platform. Kenya provides a useful example of how that model is taking shape. NCBA's LOOP DFS launched LOOP BIZ+, a merchant platform that brings together payment acceptance, working-capital loans, supplier credit and AI-powered inventory management. Its point-of-sale offering accepts card, contactless and mobile money payments, while merchant transaction histories can help determine eligibility for credit. The product places several business functions within one platform. A merchant can receive payments, access financing and manage inventory through services connected to the same commercial relationship. That model also gives the provider a closer view of the merchant's business activity, which can support decisions around lending and other financial products. Absa has pursued a related approach through Absa Next, which the bank introduced in October as a digital interface bringing together banking, payments, credit, savings, investments and business finance. The platform also allows people who are not existing Absa customers to access its services. These developments illustrate how banks and fintech companies are competing to become more central to the financial lives of businesses and individuals. Payment processing remains an important entry point, but providers can pursue additional revenue and customer relationships through lending, savings and other services. The opportunity is particularly relevant in a market where merchants already process substantial volumes of digital payments. Safaricom reported that its M-PESA merchant network had reached 3.13 million businesses, with transaction value of KSh41.68 trillion during its 2026 financial year. That network provides a large distribution base for services built around merchant payments and transaction histories. SACCOs are also part of the expanding digital financial services market. TechTrendsKE reported that regulated SACCO assets reached KSh1.21 trillion in 2025, as these institutions expanded their use of digital credit, payments and member transaction data. Their position in the financial lives of members gives them a route into services that overlap with those offered by banks and fintech companies. The expansion also brings payment providers into a more demanding regulatory environment. TechTrendsKE's coverage of the proposed National Payment System Bill described provisions that would expand the Central Bank of Kenya's supervisory powers, including inspection, intervention and consumer-protection responsibilities. As fintech companies take on lending and other financial activities, their role in the financial system becomes broader. A platform that once handled payments may also influence access to credit, business cash flow and the management of customer information. That makes the quality of its financial services and the way it handles merchant data more consequential. The next stage of competition will therefore involve how effectively providers combine payments with services that solve practical business problems. At Moonshot, executives pointed to cash-flow management, fraud prevention, customer insights and merchant support as areas where businesses need more assistance. Kenya's newer merchant platforms show how those needs are being translated into products. For African fintech companies, the commercial proposition is becoming broader: build a relationship through payments, then use that relationship to serve more of the business. Mastercard and FAB give UAE cardholders a chance to win Messi memorabilia. * home | * Mastercard and FAB give UAE cardholders a chance to win Messi memorabilia. Mastercard and FAB launch Messi memorabilia campaign for UAE cardholders. Mastercard and First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) have rolled out a football-themed rewards campaign for UAE cardholders, linking everyday payments to exclusive experiences and Lionel Messi memorabilia. The collaboration leverages Messi's global appeal as a Mastercard ambassador to deepen customer engagement and expand the value proposition of card-based rewards. Campaign details. Selected FAB Mastercard cardholders participated in a Messi-themed game connected to the football legend, with the chance to win rare memorabilia. The experience ran on Mastercard's Priceless platform and drew on FAB's Rewards program, the Mastercard network, and the banks' sports sponsorships. Both companies described the initiative as a step toward tying card spending more closely to individual customer interests and passions. Industry executives described the campaign as part of a broader shift in UAE loyalty programs. Rather than traditional points, rewards are increasingly centered on access and exclusive experiences. Gina Petersen-Skyrme, senior vice president and country manager for the UAE and Oman at Mastercard, said, "Through our collaboration with FAB, we are bringing the excitement of football and the global appeal of Lionel Messi closer to cardholders in the UAE, creating exclusive experiences that turn everyday payments into priceless moments." Product and experience enhancements. The campaign builds upon FAB's Rewards Active Mastercard credit card, underscoring the emphasis on an active lifestyle. A distinctive feature of the campaign is within the FAB app, where users can view a virtual version of their card that includes a moving image of Messi. The developers describe this as a first-of-its-kind feature worldwide, designed to translate the aspirational appeal of football into tangible, card-linked experiences. Strategic focus. By combining the Mastercard Priceless platform with FAB's rewards ecosystem and high-profile sports sponsorships, the initiative aims to reposition loyalty programs from simple point accrual to immersive, branded experiences. The campaign reflects a strategic push toward meaningful, lifestyle-aligned rewards that resonate with customers' interests beyond traditional cashback or points accrual. Industry analysis. Industry observers view this campaign as indicative of a broader trend in the UAE and wider Middle East toward experiential loyalty. The shift from points-centric rewards to access-based benefits could encourage deeper brand loyalty and higher card spend in targeted segments. Partnerships with globally recognized brands and athletes, combined with immersive in-app features, may set a new benchmark for how banks differentiate their products in a competitive market. However, the approach also entails considerations for cost management and inclusivity. While exclusive experiences can boost engagement, banks must balance high-value campaigns with sustainable customer acquisition and retention strategies. The integration of dynamic digital assets - such as a live Messi visual within the FAB app - highlights the potential for fintechs and banks to blend entertainment with financial products, potentially driving higher app adoption and cross-sell opportunities. Overall, Mastercard and FAB's Messi memorabilia initiative signals a notable shift in loyalty design toward experiences and access, reinforcing the role of strategic partnerships and digital-enabled personalization in shaping the next generation of card-based rewards.

Airtm partners with Mastercard's BVNK for stablecoin payments. Oct 29, 2026 at 01:00 PM GMT+1 Airtm has partnered with Mastercard-owned stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK to introduce wallet-based payments for users in emerging markets through a new integration built on the Stellar blockchain. * Airtm has partnered with Mastercard's BVNK to allow users in emerging markets to pay participating retailers directly from their digital wallets. * The integration will operate through the newly launched Airtm Connect platform, which connects digital asset companies with Airtm's existing user network. * Stellar will serve as the blockchain payment network for the integration, with the companies planning to begin rolling out the service in Q4 2026. * The partnership will give Airtm access to Mastercard's Global Money Platform, which supports traditional currency accounts, stablecoin payments and international money transfers. * BVNK will become another infrastructure provider for Airtm, giving the company more options for handling customer deposits, incoming transfers and payments across different markets. According to an announcement made at the Stellar Meridian Conference on Oct. 29, the partnership will allow Airtm customers to pay participating retailers directly from their digital wallets using BVNK's payment infrastructure. The service will operate through Airtm Connect, a newly launched product that allows digital asset companies to connect their services with Airtm's existing user network. Both companies expect to begin rolling out the integration in the fourth quarter of 2026, with new options for customers to fund their wallets, receive payments and spend their balances at supported merchants. Airtm Connect will support direct wallet payments. Under the agreement, Airtm users will be able to make purchases at retailers supported by BVNK without having to move their funds to a separate payment service first. Airtm Connect will provide the connection between the company's digital wallet network and external financial service providers, including BVNK. The integration will use Stellar as its underlying blockchain payment network, allowing transactions to be processed through infrastructure designed for low-cost transfers. Airtm operates in emerging markets where customers often use digital dollars and alternative financial services to receive international payments, hold funds and access global commerce. The company said its partnership with BVNK would help address difficulties customers face when moving money between digital wallets and conventional payment systems. Rubén Galindo Steckel, CEO of Airtm, said the company has spent the past decade developing financial infrastructure that connects users in underserved markets with the global dollar economy. "We believe payments should move natively on-chain - it's simply a better way to move money," Steckel said. He explained that reliable funding services need to work alongside payment options that allow customers to spend their money. According to Steckel, BVNK's existing banking connections and stablecoin funding infrastructure will complement Airtm's network of users and local payment services. The partnership will provide Airtm with another infrastructure provider as it continues operating across jurisdictions with different banking systems, stablecoin regulations and access to liquidity. Mastercard Global Money Platform joins the integration. Airtm will gain access to Mastercard's recently launched Global Money Platform through its partnership with BVNK. The platform allows financial technology companies and businesses to manage traditional currencies, stablecoins, international transfers and payment accounts through a single application programming interface. As previously reported by crypto.news, Mastercard introduced the service in October following its acquisition of BVNK earlier this year. Nuvei, Marqeta, Ontop, Beem and Almond FinTech were among the first companies preparing to integrate the platform. Its services include multicurrency accounts, currency conversion, payment cards and local bank transfers, allowing participating companies to select the functions they need. Mastercard expects local bank payouts through Mastercard Move to support more than 40 currencies across over 200 countries and territories in 2027. For Airtm, access to the platform will provide additional payment and banking infrastructure while allowing the company to maintain its existing relationships with customers. The acquisition brought BVNK's technology for stablecoin settlements, international payouts and treasury operations into Mastercard's payments business. Kimberly Mescal Julien, global head of partnerships at BVNK, said the Airtm agreement demonstrates how financial technology companies can connect digital wallets with everyday commerce. She described Airtm Connect as a way for wallet providers to offer customers more opportunities to spend their funds through existing payment infrastructure. Stellar will handle blockchain transactions. The Airtm integration will use Stellar, which BVNK added to its stablecoin payments platform in September. BVNK's Stellar network integration made the blockchain available to business customers through its existing API, supporting payments, remittances and treasury transfers across more than 130 markets. Customers can access Stellar without developing separate blockchain connections or replacing their current payment systems. The network supports transfers between blockchain accounts and provides infrastructure for businesses handling digital asset payments across different markets. BVNK's existing Stellar connection will serve as the blockchain component of its arrangement with Airtm, while the companies' respective services will handle wallet access and payment connectivity. The announcement did not identify the stablecoins that Airtm customers will initially be able to spend through the integration. Airtm plans to expand its payment infrastructure. Beyond merchant payments, the partnership will give Airtm additional options for handling customer deposits and incoming transfers across its supported markets. The company currently works with multiple financial infrastructure providers to serve users across different countries and payment systems. According to Airtm, BVNK will become another provider within that network, allowing the company to offer different funding routes depending on customer needs and local availability. Steckel said Airtm does not intend to depend on a single payment provider or blockchain network as it develops its international services. "Our infrastructure strategy has always been about choice for Airtm and for our users," he said. The companies have scheduled the initial rollout for Q4 2026, although they have not announced which countries or participating retailers will receive access first.
