Requirements
  • High school graduate; an associate degree in a business-related field is preferred.
  • Two years of clerical experience, preferably in a healthcare-related field.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to research account information and work independently.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in an organized manner.
  • Standard knowledge of computer functions and ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and projected goals.
  • Must be willing to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Near visual acuity is necessary for constant review of patient accounts and correspondence.
Responsibilities
  • Process correspondence received in the Patient Accounts Department, including contacting insurance companies for follow-up on requests for information needed for claim payment, processing zero-payment correspondence, and routing mail to appropriate employees.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of correspondence from outside companies and meet quality standards measured by departmental and facility performance-improvement processes.
  • Retrieve, sort, and distribute correspondence within the patient accounts department daily.
  • Scan and index correspondence using scanner equipment daily.
  • Batch post insurance payment denials into the computer daily.
  • Generate and mail requests to insurance carriers, including itemized bills and insurance claim forms, daily.
  • Scan Explanation of Benefit documents daily.
  • Request, procure, and provide information or forms required by third-party payers to complete claim processing for payment.
  • Research and correct erroneous insurance information using sources such as Blue E, patients, and employers.
  • Ensure contractual adjustments are appropriate and correct, and adjust them when needed.
  • Ensure correct account status based on information obtained or received by resequencing or dropping insurance plans, recycling billing, or taking other appropriate action.
  • Inform and educate other collectors and billers when new or updated information is received while performing job duties.
  • Enter appropriate codes and comments on accounts for tracking and historical purposes.
  • Report patterns of incorrect or incomplete registration information, billing errors, and coding problems to supervision.
  • Advise patients of their responsibilities and duties in obtaining payment from third-party payers.
  • Report third-party payers that stall or delay payments, or make payments inconsistent with contractual terms or obligations, to appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain competencies in all areas of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain departmental records, reports, and files as required and in an organized manner.
  • Provide customer service to all customers encountered.
  • Meet or exceed departmental and individual goals, and motivate and assist others in their processes as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and descriptive online notes of correspondence and conversations with patients or other sources.
  • Maintain competencies related to major job functions for age-specific populations, periodic performance evaluations, and patient satisfaction and complaint issues.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
