Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in sports performance or a related field.
  • Ability to lead a class or provide individual service.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to motivate and educate members.
  • Ability to set up, move, and store equipment.
  • A personal trainer certification from a nationally recognized organization such as YMCA Fitness Specialist Trainer, YMCA Fitness Testing and Assessment Specialist Trainer, American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise, or National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and instruct classes or programs in a specialty area and observe and discuss individual participant progress.
  • Support the sports performance program by working with Healthy Living leadership to create programs for each team's specific needs and schedule in YMCA facilities and community locations.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants and facilitate relationship building among participants and members while providing motivational support and guidance.
  • Increase participant awareness of healthy lifestyle factors.
  • Encourage member and parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Attend required staff meetings and approved training sessions.
  • Set up and take down class equipment and report equipment problems.
  • Ensure safe and effective classes and respond to and report accidents and incidents.
  • Convey basic knowledge of YMCA Total Health and Activate America programs.
  • Track, monitor, evaluate, and transition assigned Total Health participants; provide motivational support and counseling; and maintain accurate related records.
  • Lead ongoing YMCA Total Health classes or programs in a specialized area.
  • Adhere to abuse prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Ensure staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization's abuse risk management standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current state-approved first aid certification, to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • Current state-approved cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification, to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Total Service or Total Health Training, to be completed within 60 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively may be considered.
