Requirements
- A post-secondary degree or equivalent work experience in a related field is required.
- Five years of experience in the transportation or less-than-truckload industry or a related field is required.
- Experience and understanding of accepted loss prevention, safety, and risk management practices are required.
- Strong knowledge of Department of Transportation regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements, Canada Labour Code Part II, and related health, safety, and environmental legislation is required.
- Experience with accident investigations is required.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene, building codes, and fire code legislation is required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, attention to detail, organizational skills, prioritization, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, presentation, persuasion, collaboration, and partnership abilities are required.
- The ability to travel within Canada and the United States, including overnight travel, is required.
- The ability to work in varying weather conditions and work environments such as docks, yards, and trailers, including loud-noise environments, is required.
- The ability to work different shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, and overnights, is required.
Responsibilities
- Develop, recommend, implement, and oversee initiatives that promote a safe working environment in accordance with legislation, regulations, and corporate requirements.
- Perform timely safety, hazardous materials, accident, incident, and near-miss investigations; identify contributing factors; prepare reports and summaries; and ensure identified improvement plans are implemented.
- Adhere to federal and provincial requirements and submit all required regulatory filings.
- Track, review, and analyze accident, incident, and injury data and develop action plans with leadership and Contractor Relations to identify risks and implement controls.
- Manage and follow up on reporting through Riskmaster relating to vehicle accidents and injuries.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive, sustainable safety strategy using Quality Decision Making methodology and complete annual reviews to reduce accidents and injuries.
- Maintain relationships with contractors and vendors in partnership with Contractor Relations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and work practices to ensure Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulatory compliance for the transportation and trucking industry.
- Manage safety programs and initiatives, including the safety clock, Health and Safety Committee meetings, and daily pre-shifts.
- Administer and evaluate safety audit procedures, provide improvement plans and program suggestions, and implement changes to address identified trends and ensure compliance.
- Partner with vendors to ensure compliance and educational guidelines meet company and governing-body requirements, including automated external defibrillator installation and education.
- Review Health and Safety Committee meeting minutes for compliance and ensure raised issues are addressed and closed in a timely manner.
- Work with Learning and Development to design and develop instructional and safety training programs.
- Maintain the safety resources library and record-keeping systems, including Health and Safety documentation, regulatory certifications, and contractor education records.
- Participate in safety meetings and awareness campaigns to build safety culture among contractors, vendors, and employees.
- Participate in local, provincial, and national organizations and represent the company professionally.
- Work with the Telematics department to investigate accidents and address Hours of Service violations.
- Identify and analyze potential workplace hazards, establish procedures, and recommend safety policies and practices.
- Inspect service-center facilities and conduct yard checks as required.
- Comply with applicable laws, regulations, company policies, and procedures.
- Perform other duties as required.
Desired Qualifications
- Bilingual English/French proficiency is preferred; within Quebec, it is required.
- Ability to successfully complete Board Canadian Registered Safety Professionals certification within 24 months of hire.
- Ability to successfully complete Joint Health and Safety Committee certification I and II within 18 months.
- Ability to successfully complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System certification within three months of hire.
- Ability to successfully complete Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification within three months of hire.
- Ability and willingness to learn new applications, software, systems, and equipment as required.
