About the Job

Requirements

  • A BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering, or at least 3 years of experience in mechanical design.
  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals including strength of materials, material science, statics, and heat transfer.
  • Knowledge of tolerance analysis and mechanism design.
  • Design validation skills, including identifying critical requirements and test methods to evaluate designs, and failure analysis skills.
  • 3D computer-aided design experience; NX is preferred. 2D drafting and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) skills are also required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design next-generation input device products, portable and desktop computers, and modules supporting the Mac and iOS product lines, spanning technology development, concept generation, detailed design, analysis, testing, and mass-production ramp.
  • Develop initial product layouts and new technology concepts.
  • Design mechanisms and sensors in detail.
  • Support technology investigations and development.
  • Build prototypes to validate function, manufacturability, and robustness.
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) or coordinate FEA activities to evaluate and optimize design concepts.
  • Analyze data generated from builds and lab experiments.
  • Participate in design reviews to generate and receive constructive feedback.
  • Perform tolerance analyses to predict the performance of mechanisms, sensors, and cosmetic features.
  • Create specifications and detailed designs, and prepare 2D documentation for parts and assemblies.
  • Work with operations teams to evaluate and develop supply chains capable of manufacturing new subsystems and products.
  • Interact with vendors to develop manufacturing processes and tooling concepts.
  • Define testing requirements and equipment, and analyze the resulting data.
  • Support build activities, including finding root causes of failures and solutions to issues that impede build progress.

Desired Qualifications

  • Apply creative problem-solving, diligence in finding solutions to design challenges, spatial reasoning, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of design for assembly and manufacturability, simple fixture design, design considerations for high-volume manufacturing, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and metrology including basic measurement systems.
  • Knowledge of materials and processes including metal machining, plastic injection and compression molding, designing with metals and polymers, sheet-metal design, and material finishing.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering fundamentals and interconnect technologies.
  • Experience with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), large-dataset and computer-aided data analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), finite element analysis (FEA), and mechanical prototyping.
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) experience with data exchange and printed circuit board (PCB) and flexible printed circuit (FPC) files, eCAD, and electrical-mechanical control outline (MCO) generation.
  • Factory build-support experience.
  • Experience working in a team environment and self-motivation to identify and close design issues.
  • Proficiency with high-volume manufacturing processes; particular consideration for experience in precision mechanism and sensor design.
  • Industry experience in medical, consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, or other fields with relevant technology and development models.
