In the South Bay, Magic Leap Inc. is laying off 76 employees at its facility located at 1376 Bordeaux Dr. in Sunnyvale, effective Oct. 1. * In Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, brasserie Wood Tavern, which first opened in 2007, will close its 50-seat restaurant at 6317 College Ave. when its lease expires at the end of the year, the Chronicle reports. * Moving on to downtown San Francisco real estate, a new office report from CommercialCafe reveals that San Francisco topped the Western U.S. in office lease rates, averaging a little more than $65 per square foot in June - nearly double the national average of $33.67. San Francisco led the region in office investment, with nearly $2.4 billion in sales through June. * Finally, the downtown San Francisco Jollibee is almost ready to open after a long wait. Vanderbilt University will open a new arts college in San Francisco next year with the support of a $75 million gift from Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang and his wife, Lori, the university announced on Tuesday. Pending approval, the campus's flagship college will be the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang College of Art, Architecture and Design. The gift also inspired philanthropic support from alumni and others, for a total investment so far of more than $100 million. Vanderbilt San Francisco is set to open in 2027, with a national search underway for the college's inaugural dean. The planned campus is located at the 4.5-acre Potrero Hill site the college is purchasing from California College of the Arts, and Vanderbilt announced earlier this year that it plans to enroll about 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students there after next year's closure of CCA. Anthropic's record-breaking $1.5 billion settlement for an AI copyright lawsuit filed by writers who accused the company of training its AI models on copyrighted books has been approved by a federal judge in San Francisco, Reuters reports. In an order on Monday, Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín stated that the settlement will provide "meaningful relief," offering authors around $3,000 for each book allegedly pirated by Anthropic. The company was sued by a group of authors in 2024 who accused Anthropic of using pirated copies of their work to train its Claude large language models. Outside Lands offers up new snack series. San Francisco's biggest concert of the year is coming to Golden Gate Park Aug. 7-9, and this year Outside Lands is shaking up its culinary offerings. The most recent addition to the lineup is the debut of Snack Series, which will feature more than 20 Bay Area restaurants serving snack-sized portions of standout menu items. Pharmaceutical company to shut down, lay off 25 workers in Solano County. DesigneRx Pharmaceuticals Inc. will permanently cease its manufacturing operations at its facility at 4941 Allison Parkway in Vacaville, resulting in the permanent separation of affected employees. Separations are expected to begin by Sept. 21 and continue to Oct. 16. A total of 25 employees will lose their jobs, according to a WARN filing with the state. The filing notes that a residual group of approximately five employees will remain employed on an ongoing basis to support the wind-down and decommissioning process and the anticipated surrender of the facility to the landlord. Designerx Pharmaceuticals specializes in therapeutic protein drug manufacturing, focusing on innovative cancer treatments. Monterey Mushrooms slashes growing operations at Morgan Hill facility. Monterey Mushrooms LLC is laying off 253 employees at its facility located at 642 Hale Ave. in Morgan Hill. The job cuts will occur in different stages with the first separations expected to occur between Sept. 20 and Oct. 4. Of the 252 affected employees, 224 are represented by the United Farm Workers of America. Bumping rights exist for these union-represented employees and will be administered in accordance with the seniority provisions of the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. A WARN filing states that the facility is undergoing a major restructuring from a mushroom farm and packing facility to solely a packing facility. The restructured facility will remain operational. M&A watch. Tempus AI, Inc. (Nasdaq: TEM), a Chicago-based technology company leading the adoption of AI to advance precision medicine and patient care, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Fremont-based AI healthcare company Personalis, Inc. (Nasdaq: PSNL). Terms were not disclosed. Funding watch. Sila, an Alameda-based battery technology company, raised $300 million led by Atreides Management and Sutter Hill Ventures. 8VC, Bessemer Venture Partners, Matrix Partners and T. Rowe Price Associates. Runta, a San Francisco platform for AI agent development, raised $20 million in seed funding led by a16z. Reo.Dev, a San Francisco AI-native go-to-market company, raised $11.3 million in Series A funding. This story from the Wall Street Journal takes us across the country to Burlington, Conn., where a man by the name of Edward Marchion went out on a limb when he bought a four-bedroom house in an affluent suburb without ever actually stepping foot inside. But when he did finally visit the home for the first time, there were some skeletons in the closet. Specifically, Connecticut State Police described three bodies found at the foreclosed home as "skeletal remains" and identified one of them as the previous co-owner. Marchion won the house in June at a "sight unseen" foreclosure auction, meaning bidders weren't able to tour inside beforehand. Magic Leap to lay off 193 employees after 'pivot' to supplier role for makers of AI glasses. By David Lyons South Florida Sun Sentinel PUBLISHED: July 21, 2026 at 7:00 AM EDT Magic Leap, the Broward County-based pioneer in augmented reality devices, has informed the state of Florida it intends to lay off 193 people as part of a major organizational shift. The company, which was founded in 2010 and maintains a campus at 7500 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Plantation, said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice to Florida Commerce that the permanent terminations will become effective Oct. 1. An accompanying list of senior and staff level positions show those losing their jobs are highly skilled employees in hardware, manufacturing engineering, product management, quality, software and technical program management. Top-side executives in engineering and other leadership positions are also affected. "Magic Leap has sharpened our strategic focus on the areas where our expertise creates the most value across the AR ecosystem: waveguide manufacturing and device integration," a spokesperson said Monday in an emailed statement to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "To align with this direction, we are making organizational changes that reflect where we see the greatest opportunity in helping technology companies bring AI display glasses to market faster and more efficiently." The company did not respond to question about how many employees would be left in Plantation after the laid-off workers depart. Faster development of AI display glasses. The layoff notice came less than two weeks after the company announced a "strategic pivot to accelerate the development of AI display glasses." The company said it was moving from "building first-party devices to becoming the essential AR ecosystems partner, waveguide supplier, and device integration expert for the technology industry." Waveguides are structures that keep electromagnetic, light or sound waves along narrow paths so they don't lose their energy. "Magic Leap is uniquely positioned to address the market's need for high-performance waveguides," said in a July 9 statement. "The company's cost-efficient manufacturing process is built for growth, while its decade-plus of deep AR expertise saves partners years of research, development and expense, dramatically accelerating their time to market." "Magic Leap is seizing the moment where our AR innovation and manufacturing expertise create the greatest market impact," said Scott Carden, senior vice president of display engineering and manufacturing in the statement. "We're solving the toughest challenges of scaling waveguide production, from industry-leading waveguide performance to manufacturing and full-device integration.
