Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of lifeguarding and/or swim instruction experience with demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Applicants must hold current lifeguard and swim instructor certification from a recognized organization, such as the Red Cross or YMCA.
  • Applicants must hold current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Applicants must hold current Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain YSLI-T and/or LGI certification within the first 90 days or by the first training offered.
  • Applicants must have knowledge of aquatic safety practices and procedures, including rescue techniques and emergency response protocols.
  • Applicants must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by program schedules.
  • Applicants must be committed to the YMCA mission and values, including youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • All employees and volunteers must adhere to abuse prevention policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, complete required training, report suspicious or inappropriate behavior, and comply with mandated reporting requirements.
  • Employees responsible for staff must ensure that staff are properly screened, trained, supervised, and held accountable to the organization’s abuse risk management standards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and feedback to lifeguards and swim instructors while fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment.
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Assist in training and developing lifeguards and swim instructors to ensure staff proficiency and emergency preparedness.
  • Teach lifeguard and swim lesson classes and assist with in-service trainings.
  • Act as the primary point of contact on the deck, maintaining a constant presence to oversee operations and address concerns.
  • Monitor pool activities for compliance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Remain ready to teach lessons or perform lifeguarding duties at any time during the assigned shift.
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to aquatic emergencies, provide assistance as needed, and coordinate with emergency services when necessary.
  • Conduct regular drills and training exercises to prepare staff for emergencies.
  • Interact with members and guests regarding aquatic programs or facilities and address their questions or concerns.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for participants.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including emergency scheduling support, staff feedback and quick checks, and feedback for program planning.
  • Collaborate with management to develop strategies for improving quality and efficiency.
  • Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards in the aquatic environment to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and documentation as required by YMCA policies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
